What are some of your microphones to use on guitar cabs? Share below!
@Sound_Stable
@Sound_Stable 2 года назад
I pretty much only use SM57 or SM7B now. One on the edge of the cap of one speaker, and the other mic further out on the cone of another. I used to use Heil PR30s as well, but I feel those work best for warm clean amps and I mostly do high gain.

I have a Marshall Valvestate 8080 combo. I put a cheap and nasty Citronics RM6 ribbon, where I removed the inner mesh, in front of it and it takes all the fizzy nastys out and doesn’t sound too shoddy.
@ChrisPetersGuitar
@ChrisPetersGuitar 2 года назад
Shure SM57 cap cone edge, Shure KSM313 right up against the 57, on the cone. You have to ensure the two mics are phase aligned. They're about 3" from the grille cloth, and the cab has a very slight slant, so this probably results in 13 degrees off axis. This is basically the Ross Hogarth setup, except he uses the Royer 121 as the ribbon mic.
@snapascrew
@snapascrew 2 года назад
Recently started sprinkling in an AKG c3000 (original not the new crap one). It’s helping me get the Adam Dutkiewicz fanboy tones. Mostly a 57. If you can’t get the tones you need out of a 57, vintage 421, and 121 then you’ve got other problems.
@billyhughes9776

My go to combo at this point is an SM57 and Beyer M160 on guitar cabs. I think they compliment each other really well. I recently tried Beyer M 88 TG for guitars and really dig that as well -- I generally use it as an kick out mic but it's super versatile.

*I definitely appreciate the tips that you given this video because I’m looking to run to microphones to catch my guitar sound.*
@compucorder64
@compucorder64 Месяц назад
I realise it's an old video. But, killer guitar tone. I ended up settling on something similar. For dirty, tones, I usea JZ Vintage 67, and an old MD421. Then either a Beyerdynamic M160, or if that's tied up on drum overheads, I have these cheap active large ribbon Golden Age Project R1-A (I've heard Cascade Fat Heads are good for this too). I have a pair of those GAP R1-As, and they're good Blumlein for drum room, or amp room too, or even overheads or those smooth dark crooner vox you mentioned. That Warm Audio reissue of the AKG D19, the WA-19 is a nice 'trash' mic for knee mic, room/roof/floor/mic. Or can do Steve Albini (RIP) technique of getting a stereo omni, on the wood floor, way back from the amp or drums. I use a cheap pair from France called Earsight, that I got for field recording that are tiny and come prewired.
@ravigunslinger
@ravigunslinger 2 года назад
great video! albini does the room mic pointing to the ceiling thing too. But he lays it on the floor! I'm definitely going to try the little delay trick. Re: phase.... if you find that you're having phase issues, rather than discarding a mic, can't you just nudge wave form in your daw until it's better phase aligned? That's what i do and it seems to work. I'd also love to hear Manny's/others thoughts on mixing a DI'd guitar with the mic'd signals. I've found that mixing an overdriven DI'd signal sort of makes it crackle a little, in a pleasing broken speaker kinda way!
@mannysmiclocker
@mannysmiclocker 2 года назад
Ravi, I do cut a DI sometimes for re amping and running into cool effects outside the box like a Leslie or fostex reverb box. There is a session I did for Warren’s recording academy I used Altec M11 on the floor like albini. Omnis can be super cool to mess with. I just went on EBay and picked up son 60s or 70s Akg D160 Omni dynamics . Fun to get different colors Thru mics not plug ins

Billy so thrilled you dug that and of course Warren and crew for always letting me do my thang Ha! Cool, I like a lot of bottom end on my guitars, like this one, but it is going into bass frequencies territory, so I would've liked to see how he would manage that within a mix, with a bass or even a synth, I know it's not the point of the video, but leaves me with that doubt.
@mannysmiclocker
@mannysmiclocker 2 года назад
Dani, I’ll always check with a ssl eQ and cut any boom from the low end if it sucks up too much low frequency’s . Also the Senn doesn’t have really that bottom so I can lean in on that instead. Yes mixing this Godzilla tone is a challenged and I’ve spent 22 years dealing with it my first band Distortion Felix ( Juan Alderete on bass of TMV) and my current band The Chavez Ravine with ( Mando Lopez ) on bass. @legacyShredder1
@legacyShredder1 2 года назад
@@OneEyedOracle You can use the SM57 and SM58 interchangeably. They are so close to the same microphone that it won't matter much. 57 is fantastic on guitars, any instrument really. A 58 is fantastic on voice, but so is a 57. What DAW are you using? I want you to download the free Bass Sans Amp plugin to add beef and saturation to your DI Bass. @legacyShredder1
@legacyShredder1 2 года назад
The best way to get recordings that will pop out is to sound treat your room you're recording in. If you're on a super tight budget use blankets to isolate your guitar amps/speakers. Set up chairs with piles of clothing near the mic. If you're doing vocals drape up blankets behind yourself and the microphone. If you have a closet in the room with clothes hanging up inside, open the doors to absorb reflections. Stuff a few piles of clothes in the corners of the room as bass traps. If you have couch pillows prop them up against the walls. Reduce reflections as much as possible. If you eliminate the room you're left with a good microphone, the instrument, and the voice which is exactly what you want.
