Watch as Weezna tears apart the Allen and Heath GL4000 mixing console to prepare to be modified. Through out this process Weezna will be re-capping the preamps, eq, and master section of this console as well as adding motorized faders to part of the console that will be linked to the DAW. Last will be the modification of the meter section, they will be switched from analog VU meters to digital LED meters.

its always a good idea when moving these boards to support the underneath with something firm these boards weigh a lot and will twist when lifting and walking them and placing them down this twisting puts a lot of stress on the pots that are nutted to the surface circuit board and this twisting can cause solder joints to crack no fun hope i make sense haha looks like a lot of fun man good job

Good to see you back! Was wondering what happened to you. You using Cakewalk by Bandlab?
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 5 лет назад
studiodude1 I’m not using the band lab version at this moment, still using the Sonar version. I’m building a brand new studio from scratch so it will be something I get into over time.

Sick video! I’d Also love To hear about the moving faders
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 4 года назад
jips pi So yeah unfortunately I didn’t do the moving faders because there was an issue with each channels circuitboard being in the way of the moving fader. I thought the workaround was to use one of the aux channels as the volume but it turned out that there wasn’t enough space to cram it all in

TrueSoundStudios how were you even going to go about it?

You only need to replace the caps that are actually in the audio path, not much point in replacing the others unless they're causing a problem. To find the ones in the audio path you just need to look at the schematics. Allen & Heath have great support with all their schematics on their website.

These are great videos. Excellent job. Question: You mentioned adding moving faders to your Allen Heath console. Who sells these where you can retro fit motorized faders (w/software needed to record the fader moves) for these consoles. Can you please point me to where I would check this out. Thanks very much. Philip

Uptown Photography thank you thank you, so I was going to buy premade control surfaces, take them apart and use the moving faders. Unfortunately because of how the channel strips are set up, there was no room to add the moving fader and then also have control of the analog console. Unfortunately I had to abandon that idea
@uptownphotography
@uptownphotography 4 года назад
@@TrueSoundTV Thanks for the reply. A shame you can't add the faders. I did find a place in the UK that sells retro fit moving faders, but you do need the room for the fader w/motor and the control board under the fader. It's also really expensive. I will have to use a DAW I guess if i want to automate a mix. What city and state is your studio in? i am in Hazlet, NJ about one hour south of NYC. I do photography these days but used to do the studio full time years ago out of my house. I had an analog 1 inch machine running at 15 or 30 IPS and now have a stand alone 24 Trk Hard disk recorder. I am putting the studio back together mainly for myself not to earn a living. All the best................Philip

How did all those caps fail? They're normally very reliable
@jayc7644
@jayc7644 4 года назад
They don't all fail, it's called recapping a board. It's basically the equivalent to an overhaul for a mixing counsel in a professional studio. This insures zero problems with a capacitors for a very long time rather than having to recap an individual channel every so often which interrupts the session and business.

I recently scored a GL3300 for a great deal and I am about to open it up to remove some modules. I am going to remove 2 banks of 8 faders for a total of 16 removed. my plan is to recess my Icon Qcon Pro X into the desk. I have a question that would be answered when I open it up but I was hoping you may already know. I am aware the input sections are easily removed or moved but can you move the master section to where you want? The reason I ask is because I want the Pro X in the center of the console and not off to one side or the other.

Hello sir. I had some questions. Are you replacing these because you can hear the problems when you record, and then you looked and you saw capacitors were blown? Is this a problem most people have to deal with if they own one of these or do you have to do this because of your previous upgrade? I bought a gl2400 from a church for cheap, is there any how to video on how to restore this thing? Grp2 for instance has a hum and I want to fix it.

It may be unnecessary. First try to measure ESR (if we're talking about electrolytics). And if it's high (you need a special chart), then there is a problem. British made A&H actually used good electrolytics and I doubt that they all went off.

Amazing video. I also have A&H GL 4000 48ch model. I have problem in Master section, at Left-Right. Right ch gives me 6db lower volume than left. Output is also lower through insert rtn. Groups are ok. In my opinion I should recap master section. What do you think?

Good day when u see this message out of hundreds i have a question do you know a company that modify analog console midas f32 I want it resowter wiring replaced to mastering grade and mix inputs and output switched to burl with different compacitors because its a older but still usable technology and all card modified on everyboard I know it will cost a little some but I'm cool with that since midas predominant my have digital console and mixer there analog is creamy

Have you already made the capacitor repairs for your GL4000. Please upload video. I also have that mixing console and I also have to change all caps.

Lot of work for a GL4000 Chief! I've got an ML5000 that I'm retiring soon, as cost and end result of upgrade isn't worth the effort versus spending some bucks elsewhere. Its still an Allen and Heath! You're a brave and clever dude! Good luck.... Keen to watch and see if the effort is worth it. Great vids.

Hey weezna I dont comment much. I like your channel you are very clear with your descriptions. I dont feel like I have been sold by someone who is using me for a buck. I am a sonar user and you are one of my prime go to channel. Thank you.

Cakewalk is one of the best for composing/producing with midi and midi instruments and it's prochannel is great. But if I was going to be mixing without midi at all, I'd buy a Mac and learn protools.

I have a question for you: I own 2 GL2800s.. one made in UK and one made in China. The Chinese one sounds harsh, and the UK one sounds musical. It's not in my imagination, I can send you sound samples. Any idea why?.. they are supposed to be identical, aren't they? :) I'd much appreciate your answer! :) THANKS
@TrueSoundTV
@TrueSoundTV 5 лет назад
dutu000 hey, so I’d assume that different components (capacitors, resistors, etc.) were used and that contributes to the difference in sound. Also the age of each console could change the sound due to the age of the components
