Mixing Kick and Bass (for a full yet tight low end mix)

Kick and bass mixing can be difficult to get right because they both occupy the same area of the frequency spectrum and can easily mask each other so it can be challenging sometimes to get the two to sit together to create a full, yet clean, tight low end. In this video to take you inside one of my recent sessions, where I go in-depth about my plugin choices and mix decisions around how to mix kick and bass (and guitars!).

-- Mixing Kick and Bass (for a full yet tight low end mix) --
One of the more common questions I get asked is about mixing kick and bass for a tight low end and. One big mistake in an amateur mix is having too much low end that sounds muddy and dull and being able to mix kick and bass guitar together well is a skill you need to produce professional sounding mixes.
In this video, I open up one of my recent sessions to show you exactly what I did to get a clean, tight low end when mixing kick and bass.

I can't tell you how much I like the calm and laid back style here. I get really worn out by listening to over the top and cringey videos when I'm just trying to learn something or get a second/third opinion on how to approach these problems. This is a nice rundown of the relevant information, presented cleanly. Also, I really appreciate you not telling me to smash that like button. Thank you for not abusing my ears, and for treating me like an adult simply eager to learn more. Liked and subscribed. Cheers.

Wow! Thanks Sara. I will now have to spend a month going through what you did there. I notice that I can hear much more clearly what you are doing in my DT 880 Pro headphones rather than my Acoustic Energy AE-22 active monitors which go down to 60Hz. I don't know how far down the DT 880s go but I would recommend any other listeners to check out these subtleties through some low reaching headphones. Can't thank you enough for sharing this amongst the community. So kind.

I tend to use a Gate on distorted bass guitar tracks to cut out a lot of the noise that's introduced because when you compress it's going to bring out that noise even more. Best to hit the gate first, so the compressor doesn't make a big mess.

This is very good, very thorough in the coverage. I'd suggest doing something like this but with the stock pro tools plug ins. Most of the plug ins, good to know about!, are OK but for some of us were just not going to look to getting them. Learned a lot about the structure which was productive.

I absolutely love your channel! I’m an intermediate student of the recording arts, and I spend a lot of time looking around RU-vid for good information about audio production. There are some other channels that do a good job, but I feel like these videos are on a different level. Easily paid content quality, you pack so much dense information into such a small, easy to understand package, no nonsense! But unlike many of the paint by number content creators, your excitement for the details and passion for teaching really come through, and it’s hypnotizing! I learn so much practical, useful information in such a small amount of time with your videos, and I’ve had revelations and learned approaches that have completely upgraded my mix process, so thank you! You don’t get enough followers or views, I’m spreading the word in my classes (we’re talking about gainstaging and vu meters today, and there were a lot of questions, all of which were answered in your video better than our professor could explain, so I passed your video around, 10-20 of the views from today were my classmates haha). Keep up the great work, and I really hope the best for you and that your videos keep getting deeper and deeper into the RU-vid algorithms!!

My dear Sara, your content is absolutely what I need to hear, but you are so kind, laid back and Lancashire Lass that I keep drifting off into sophorism. So keep up the excellent content but please try to stop hypnotising me. There is no criticism here, you give fantastic insights, which are eagerly lapped up, but.... I keep having to watch them twice because you are so calming. Much love Sara, you are one of the best tutors on RU-vid x

I had definitely been pushing levels way too hard trying everything to keep their summed values from clipping the master bus level with something always clipping over by a few dB and now I know it’s all because I start by setting my kicks too high usually trying to peak them out close to -6dB and then building from there. Then I tried the reverse of building instruments and vocals where they sounded lovely and seeing no clipping but by the time I added the drums back in the whole mix just sounded way too low at the mix/master bus. Can’t wait to try your method of gain staging levels and seeing how well my elements fall into place around gain staging the kick and bass. Thanks again Sara! Cheers!
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing

Your story sounds similar to mine. I just didn't get on with trying to start from the vocals or main instrument. I hope you find it works for you, just keep an eye on the meter as you build the mix.

Thanks Sara...almost feels like an asmr vid hehe. Great that you share your info and fast track others; good solid techniques. While its great to get super res monitors...I respectfully disagree with 15hz (genre dependent) but definitely on this type of track content, only 1 source can occupy that region at a time. Whilst there will be a very minute hearing of that on some systems, the rms requirement of low end power...especially in cluttered songs at that freq is a physics nightmare...12th order filtering at 30hz does a much cleaner job imvho unless there is something especially deserving feature. Its only my 2c but even at 30hz, the phase issues and flop caused by elements there are easily averted. Great plugs like DSM spectrum mapper or trackspacer are great at reclaiming space for transients there. Put another way...you have a fundamental open e playing on bass guitar, and a kick tuned to 55hz, spectral pushing that content out of the way but allowing it the rest of the time truly increases clarity...but maybe thats on another video of yours "-) What is also an issue is that most rooms are nowhere near big enough to manage the wavelengths that low...forget the monitors hehe. I have a reasonable sized room but having a fairly flat shaker mounted to the listening chair which lets me feel all that stuff down to 20 and I have to say...tactile is definitely a great extra way in really 'seeing' that space. Hope that is ok to say. I really do like your clean and uncomplicated approach...just polishing the essence and bringing out the best without ridiculous plug in chains that people think will magically make stuff translate into something it never was...just brightness, contrast and saturation for the graphic version :-) Great Work!

Really enjoying your channel Sara. I like how you explain things very clearly, and it's refreshing to see that you will use any tools necessary to achieve the sound you're after. Many folks will preach that if you're using too many plugins, then you're doing something wrong. Sometimes I'll have sparse plugins, and other times the mix is chock full of them. I'll do whatever it takes to get the desired end results.

Thanks for your lovely feedback! Gosh, computer wise I use a Mac Pro trash can with 64 gig ram. Ironically, it's fine for audio work but the standard graphics card is pretty poor for video, passable but slower than my older 2014 MBP. So, I'm thinking of upgrading to the new M1 16" MBP which is due out this year depending on the compatibility of the M1 chip with my plugins and hardware. I highly recommend searching out the Apple Refurbished stock which is always excellent. The OTHER issue is that I'm stuck on Mojave because of my older Waves V10 plugins...but that's another story!

Hi Artur, I do use one template for most mixes and update it when I find something new to try out or something that has worked well in a previous mix and want to try again (so I don’t forget!). Can you recommend an alternative to the UA Neve 1081 plugin, please (I don't have a UA device)? And is there a reason you don't use the Plugin Alliance SSL again rather than the Waves when you're doing the Kick Drum processing at the end? Thanks so much for your time and help.

I'm glad you're finding them useful! Yes, the drum sub is in parallel. I do now use the PA version of the SSL 9000J because it's what I used to mix on back in the day. A great UA 1081 alternative would be VEQ4 by Waves.

@SaraCarterSimplyMixing 4 года назад
It can, definitely, but you don't need to do that on every mix, only when you feel it's needed.

Question. Are you saying that you route your audio track through the AUX and then the AUX to the Buss? As in the audio track never/doesn't route to/through the Buss? So it's: Bass Audio Channel 1 > Bass AUX > Bass Buss... for example

At 22:01, on the SSL channel why did you put the High pass filter at around 45Hz on the kick? Isn't it too high for the kick?
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing 2 года назад
Where you set a high pass totally depends on the tracks and how you want to use the overheads and rooms to build your drum mix. I often set it at 75Hz on the SSL actually, so it's all about the tracks used and how they sound. Thanks for watching!

Hey Sara, I like your videos and learned alot from them. I got a question regarding kick and bass, when you compress a bass guitar, do you use normal compression -to even out the performance or sidechain compression so it ducks when theres kick? or you use both of them - one after another?
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Год назад
Hi, it really depends on what tracks I've been given and how they sound. I'll start with using one compressor but if that isn't giving enough control I'll go to serial compression. Occasionally I'll try side chaining if there are kicks, bass and synth bass to control. I like to use parallel compression on bass as another option

Great video and Breakdown Sara! New subscriber here....so the Brits win, you're all just better at music! :) I noticed you have a bunch of plugins on your drums, is this just more of an ear thing, and your just adding the plugin? Or are you going in to each one of these plugins and dialing all sorts of settings?
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing 2 года назад
Thanks for the sub! I have a selection of plugins that I like to use for different reasons that are part of my template. I may use some, none or all of them depending on how the mix progresses.

Hi Sara! Loving your videos and learning a bunch of helpful stuff. I have a section of a song where the floor tom is playing an 1/8th note pattern and it really interfering with the bass, making it sound just awful. Sounding good aparr from that section. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Pro Q3 has a feature where you can see a visual representation of clashing frequencies to help you. Mastering The Mix has a plugin that does the same, Fuser?

I don't have the FabFilter ProQ, but Studio One 6 has a version very similar. I'll side chain the drums in on the bass track and try my hand at using the dynamic EQ feature. Could you do a video dedicated to using dynamic EQ? It's kind of a new concept to me. Thanks!

Great video. Silly question but my friend and I are having an argument over where your accent is front. He says Leeds, I say Newcastle. Either of us close?
