I don't mind longer videos, i actually love them all...bcuz not only it's entertaining, i am learning a lot from you. Not to mention that it diverts my anxiety and makes me forget about it...so pls. Make some more of these. Thank you!
Firstly, AWESOME videos. You've gotten so much better with your pet drone. It does look like a little pet sitting there on the log. Does it have a name? Just curious, as I would have named it. Anyway...Love the painting. Also, I love the long videos. I could sit and watch you paint and listen to you talk all day. Your like the friend I've never meet but have soooo much in common with. Hope your back feelings good today. Thanks Sarah.
Absolutely loved this video! I learn so much just from watching your process and I appreciate your authentic conversation about your surroundings, your obvious inspiration from nature, your tips, explanations and thoughts while painting. Can’t say enough about your drone footage, so enjoyable! Cheers to spring! Thankyou!🙂
Wow!! I just stumbled upon this and it was honestly really fun to watch! I learned exactly what I was wanted to! I love watercolor but am seriously not good at it yet. Wayyy out of practice. And I have been so curious about gouache, which I have never used. So thank you so very much for this!! Your painting turned out so cool!! Very pretty! I couldn’t wait for you to pull the tape off at the end 😂 And I have learned that I have to trust the process, keep it simple at the beginning and be patient… let the layers work together and not expect it to all come together on the first, the second, or the third pass of color or my brush. It has to build up to the finished result 😊
Lol!! I am the same way when outdoors, and I love to be outside. When you said, "get away from me" 😆 your painting methods are fantastic. And thank you for the thorough explanations. I'm just learning how to paint. So glad I found your channel. Take care!
I like what you said at the very end about gaining the knowledge. With every artist / RU-vidr I find a little nugget of knowledge that I never knew before. It's like a treasure hunt LOL. I'm waiting for the day that I don't need to have a reference but it all comes from my imagination. Thank you for this painting it was absolutely gorgeous
So beautiful! Your art, your surroundings and your interpretation of both. This wasn't too long at all, you shared a lot of really good information as well.
You mentioned carrying something to help you stay safe; it would be great to hear about what you do because that's something I always worry about when painting alone outside.
I won't discuss it because on the off-chance someone watches my videos and attempts something, the element of surprise is key. But you can get creative..first know what is legal where you live, next get creative :D
A friend allowed me to use on of his photographs that he took of an amazing forest scene with very strong yellow light. I dont know how to tackle it. Any tips on how to get rid of that fear of starting something I've never done? Also, I've been watching your gouache vidoes. Simple. Amazing. So beautiful and it always inspires me!
Aww thank you!! Always start with the background, so take a while to observe the photo, see what color(s) are in the distance, and lay down a base of that color. Then slowly start transitioning to more colors and more defined shapes as it gets closer to the foreground.
Loved this video Sarah!! You are such a great teacher and me being way on the other side if the globe, it's always nice to see your countryside. Love the drone angles 👍. I have a question: when ur waiting for stuff to dry, and not with drone or distractions, what do you think about? Do you analyse the painting or...? I find that's my dangerous time because it's when I 'stop' and as such tend to over criticise my progress. Hope that made sense 😅. Much love from Australia ❤
In my youth, a police officer fell behind his mortgage in a nearby village and took to crime to 'solve' his problem. On a parking lot in the woods where friends and I played fairly often because of a creek, lake, a restaurant, and a "Trim Dich" (for "Do Sports"/"Keep Fit") path with funny challenges like balance beams and such along a designated path nearby -- on this parking lot which serviced this recreation area, the police officer had stashed his own car to switch with the stolen car ('cause it was on the edge of two police districts which, back then, gave him cover due to gaps in the communication -- got fixed because of him), he was witnessed, naturally -- doh popular recreation spot -- and killed those witnesses brutally. It was talk of my village for years, but I never feared this place. "Why?" you may ask. My experience told me that this was an outlier. I had played there for many years and met many kind and friendly people and did so afterwards. It doesn't mean you get careless. You make sure to wear a bright artificial color, so that hunters don't mistake you for a deer. You keep your dog on a leash, so hunters don't shoot your dog, and you might give him something bright to wear, too, so s/he is not mistaken for some wild game. I don't have my keys weaponized as punch and stab weapon in my fist, I don't carry pepper spray or kitchen knives in handbags. Again my experience. But then, I don't live in the US. A glance at the crime stats in my area tells me, I don't have to, despite the worries of my friends who insist on accompanying me to the front door late at night. It took a while to convince them, that it is perfectly safe and would be a highly unusual event if I would get hurt. So instead of dealing with fear, you might consider a bright orange scarf, hat or vest in the woods, just in case. And I assume that rapists, murderous robbers and zombies and werewolves are unheard of or exceptional rare. So not useful to dread them, it only spoils your quality of life. My2Cents :)
i'm gathering materials to start doing gouache plein air paintings (and making a video series of myself learning how!) and i really felt what you were talking about in regards to being nervous being out by yourself haha! I live in the US and a lot of the areas around here are hunting grounds and it definitely makes me worried! Lovely painting, I enjoy the way you are merging the transparent watercolors and opaque gouache. And that forest is so pretty! I'd love to explore around there.
Thank you for inspirations i also been doing outdoor quik sketching with watercolor about month now i really loving it. And yea here in Finland is so safe that there is nothing to be scare 😊🌞
omgeee I've been watching for a wee while but somehow just now am realising you are in Scotland. me too! so much to paint here and I was also thinking recently how many fewer things there are to worry about in the woods here when it comes to animals, hunters etc. I'm more concerned about drunk teenagers than anything else haha!
Sarah, I just stumbled upon your channel today and am so happy I did. I learned quite a bit from just watching two videos. I have liked them both and subscribed to your channel. Your voice while watching your videos is so calming and I found that I was watching more intently. I hope to be watching more videos in the very near future. I am more than a beginner but still learning from others all the time. Thank you.
If your body parts aren't hurting, you're doing plein air wrong lol but no, it's just a common thing unless you bring your own chair (I do have a rolley chair but it's too cumbersome for most trails).
I live in a tourist area. I dont feel safe painting outside because the beautiful areas are so isolated and we get some strange people around. Its so sad, i feel like a big wimp. 🤷🏴
Every time I watch mob movies or Breaking Bad or something, I get really paranoid that the police are after me, or the cartels. I mean not really, but if the car behind me turns right onto the same street I just turned right on I'm like, is this it??
Have you ever mixed some watercolor into a gouache to create a color you want? I did that because I have more watercolor than gouache colors and I was just wondering if others do that as well 😄
Hmmm, I need to look at my flat brushes more often. I get so used to using my rounds that I forget the flats exist. Thank you for sharing your process. I love watching and seeing how other artists create.
Really LOVELY work and I so enjoyed your entire process! I am very interested in learning how to use the gouache with watercolor and this was so helpful! (I have been painting in oil most of my life and only recently started playing with watercolor! While visiting Scotland in fact!) Thank you for sharing! ♥️
Wow...just wow...these are incredible, the light is iridescent, so beautiful!! I love the reverence you feel for your surroundings. It's something I feel too. Thanks for sharing this.
I was just going to say you have a drone! And there it is ! You are painting with winter gloves! When I have my gloves on I am like ‘I can’t do ANYTHING except hold my dogs leash’ that’s if. And you are full on painting. 😱
I was thinking that I would be scared to be out by myself in the woods. So when you mention that you got a little creeped out, I totally understand. I admire your sense of adventure!
I just discovered you! Outstanding. I'm a hiker and started packing watercolor and gouache a few weeks ago on my daily hike. I'll be binging on your videos. Thanks!
So glad that I've found your videos. Have been learning watercolor for a few years. What I'm learning is that I don't think that there's an end to learning more about watercolor. Have been trying to learn gouache lately. I love your realistic style. By the way, I'm a Scot too. Gordon is my last name. Would love to be doing what you're doing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.🤩☺
Gouache me impressed !!!!with even all your techniques in teaching us this median your able to use video technology and drone within gouache painting... now I know and understand what I feel like when my grandma would get frustrated with the flashing vcr button going on off....after watching your coastline where a tic dared to jump on your wc paper I was startled by your drone on the log I was like omgoddess theres a log tick moving toward Sarah....beware....lol
loved your painting, easy manner and commentary, but nearly died of fright when someone was behind you ...scotland is a lovely place with plenty of space to paint.just found you on youtube and have subscribed looking forward to all your new adventures. thankyou, please take care,
Sorry to scare you!! Honestly, it is extremely safe here. Having grown up in America I have a fear instilled into me (which in a way I'm thankful for because it keeps me safer).
This is so beautiful ❤️. I didn’t realize you could paint watercolor over gouache. I’ve been painting in watercolors for several years but am interested in learning gouache, too. I’ve seen many on RU-vid using gouache, but didn’t like the effect they got. I really like yours…it doesn’t look muddy. I’m interested in joining your patreon. Is it best to start at the beginning of the month? Is that when the first payment is charged? I’m also thinking about your skill share class. Would you tell me a little more about that…what you teach and the charge. Thank you! Love your paintings, your tips and hints❤️
Thank you! Regarding Patreon it's best to start at the beginning of the month, as Patreon charges on the 1st. You can try skillshare for free if you use my link in the description.
This painting is beautiful. Yes, I worry for your safety too. I have had some very close calls in my life to be a witness to the dangers of a man or woman in secluded areas can be dangerous. I am thinking it might be a good idea to take some serious self defense classes and first aid, too! You’re a very talented person. I enjoy your work.
Thank you Susan :) I do have protection, and started boxing recently at the gym. The more I do it the more I want to take a self defense class to feel empowered and for the great workout!
There’s a hybrid paint called mission white class paint that’s supposed to be a mix of gouache and watercolor, there’s also a hybrid called shin Han pass, personally I just mix my watercolors with white gouache!
