I LOVE mixing with EZdrummer.
I use it for pre-production, tracking (with V-drums)..
And often use it in the final mix.
The only downside to EZdrummer is that the amount of control you have over individual drum sounds is extremely limited.
You can only adjust the overall balance and panning of your drums within the EZdrummer mixer.
Luckily you can have full control over your individual EZdrummer drum tracks if you know how to export them properly.
It takes a little bit of user tweaking, but it's extremely simple once you fully understand how EZdrummer's outputs work.
In this video, I share exactly how you can export your EZdrummer tracks so that you can mix them.....like an ACTUAL drum kit.

Awesome tip for EZdrummer users! I came up with an alternate solution instead of routing using Reaper, that is using the "Render selected area of tracks to stem track" function. That way you just need to "solo" the drum tracks one by one and render them to mono or stereo as required.

Would like to see the next step, adding EQ/Comp/etc to each track
@jessjohnreed7964
@jessjohnreed7964 2 года назад
It would depend on the sample. Comp is for dynamics that are too wide. I would assume stock samples are already eq'd and compressed otherwise people would complain that they're hard to work with. Eq is for specific sound management. Tight Q eq is for surgery, getting rid of offensive frequencies and wide q eq is for altering the overall color of your sound. You don't need to learn how to specifically mix ezdrums, just understand what the tools you have are for. Know what you want, and understand how to apply those tools to achieve your desired sound.
@DjentlyVISUALS
@DjentlyVISUALS Год назад
@@jessjohnreed7964 if I leave my vst drum tracks unprocessed, they never compete against the other instruments. they just sound thin (using steven slate drums 5). I do not tweak the drums like real drums, but I definitely put some compression on and some slight EQ moves on the snare and the kick. But yeah, depends on how you want it to sound.

Wow! I have often seen this but I´ve never been sure about if this gives me any benefit in production except of saving CPU usage, although I printed down my guitar and bass track for a long time since I watched your video about it. But man, it instantly gives me so much more control over the gain of the single tracks, especially the room and the overheads! Plus the constant peaking on the snare track is gone! I had to lower the output volume inside the drum vst all the time before. Great man!

I usually route to audio tracks rather than an aux track and just hit record and play the song through. If what you're showing me here, by routing to an aux and then simply "committing" them, you may have saved me 3-6 minutes (depending on the length of the track). Kudos!

I use Superior Drummer 3, but aa you would imagine, the process is exactly the same via the mixer. The only caveat with SD, is that there are individual effects as inserts, you’ll want to make sure to remove them prior to Aux’ing out as they are pre-fader and they will output to ProTools (or your DAW), and prevent dry tracks. Also in SD3 mic bleed is customizable, and like effects it’s another consideration. Good video though!

In Cubase I can press F11 set EZ drummer as a rack and then output individually through the rack. Is this what you were describing later in the video because that was slightly confusing. That way all the tracks get created for you and then you can do all the panning etc you described. Do other DAWs not have this feature?

oh shit been waiting for this one!!! edit: well, I already knew how to do all of that (but just learned recently) ... but I haven't been printing (had no idea that it varied like that). That's cool! I'm curious as to how you actually go about applying eq, comp, & verb to these virtual kits... ESPECIALLY compression (since it already has a compression track itself, but I don't really find that it is enough most of the time). Do you tend to hit each drum track with its own compression, hit it in a bus all at once, or both? EQ makes sense to do it on a per drum basis, but compression, I just don't know. I've tried both and am not sure what I like better. As usual, thanks for your wisdom, Bobby!

I also use EZDrummer, however, I do it a little different! First I send the drums to their own output like you did, but I then export the EZDrummer stems to a folder and import them into my session at the same time (you can do this quite easily in Studio One). Then I have printed tracks of all the drums rendered in audio, ready to EQ or add FX. Also in Studio One, you can make any of the imported stereo tracks mono by clicking on the stereo/mono button.

I've done this recently with my first EZD3 experience. When I tried to "bounce to disk" with my individual drum outs assigned in my DAW (Digital Performer), the drums were absent in the mix. That's when I realized that I needed to record the individual tracks to channels. It solved the problem. I need to find the "commit" button in DP. Would save a bit of time. What tweaks did you make internally, and did you do any processing externally on the demo that falls around the 1:30 mark? If so, what? Thirdly, if the demo here is not processed externally, could you share your modified original mix preset? Thanks, and keep up the great work!!!

Almost. In fact, I do render soloing each of piece of drums that needed , so I work the "wavs" in the mix. EZdrummer is great, SD is more natural thou. In EZ, I used to choose the minimal processing option (natural mix or something like that), turn any effects off and so on. I primarily use Audition which has no midi support so I use guitar pro to write the MIDI drum track. Put it in the stand alone ezdrummer program and export each individual part as audio by going to the mixer and soloing each track and exporting as audio. It sounds convoluted but I've been doing it that way for so many years it feels natural for me.

What I don't understand is this: When you route the tracks from EZ D to the auxiliary channels you created, is the fader change the same or did you change it later? I use Studio One and when I assign the outputs the faders are at zero, but in your case they are modified. Same thing for audio. when you render/Commit/Bounce are you exporting the already adjusted levels? in that case I should find the audio track faders at zero but with the levels previously adjusted before exporting, but even in this case I see your audio track faders modified and adjusted. This makes a difference to me. the levels of the various channels during export/commit/bounce. Thanx Bob. You are great

Plus the midi learn and midi mapping blows on EZD2 but excellent on SD3. There is not much to do with either of them since they are processed yo begin with as opposed to stuff like Ugritone drums which I hate.

@FrightboxRecording 3 года назад
Both kick and snare are being sent out through EZdrummer output 2. The thing to remember is that EZdrummer's outputs are stereo. A stereo output is actually just 2 mono outputs combined and hard panned. The kicks are panned left (output 2-L) and the snare is panned right (output 2-R). My aux tracks are all mono. I assign my kick aux in to receive Ezdrummer's output 2-L. I assign my my snare aux in to receive EZdrunner's 2-R. I prefer to do all of my EZdrummer mixing (panning/level/EQ/compression) within my DAW for more control and this is the only way to export the individual drums from EZdrummer.

Gerneral question about ezdrummer that I never completely understood: Ezdrummer is based on having kit presets, which from my understanding should be heavily relying on bus processing, most imporatantely bus compression (It's possible to switch different elements of the kit with other elements, so the drums themselfs should be already processed at the drum level before you switch them). Given that, if I like the sound of a preset that I created, does it make sense to export it? Will it sound the same with multi-out or will I lose all the bus compression and fx that was defined by the preset I started with?

So you say you can have like your mono kick and mono snare ran both in output 2 panned one left and one right and then as individual tracks. Even if they are hard panned in ez they still bleed into the opposite tracks. Why not just make them individual outputs? Also I just tried to commit the kick just to try one out. It doesn't work like that. It needs a visual clip.

Hi Bobby!! Amazing, tutorial, thanks a million! I’ve been doing very similar as you taught, but I have one question, if you have time to answer: I always find the Amb channel, which is a stereo one, with a lot of kick bleeding (more than I wanted). And apparently there isn’t option to tweak and reduce it in EZD. It somehow doesn’t sound good, because my kick is solid in the center and the stereo kick bleed of the Amb channel bounces too much on the sides. I can’t lower the volume, because It would lack a lot of the amazing snare character this channel provides. So I eq it to the bones to reduce the frequencies below 100hz and use Ozone Imager to narrow those same 100hz and below. This is how I try to fix it, but still, there’s a lot of the kick click left on the sides. I wonder if you already had the same problem and how you worked it around. Thank you very much!!!

Hi !!! I can hear midi drumtracks when I set multiple outputs in EZ mixer. Where is a problem?

Nice man ! If I made a list of all the things I wanted you to explain it would be as perfect as the latest videos. Really nice !

Hey, Bobby. Can you give me a tip on this one, mate, I can't find a workaround and Im stuck. It's about compressing a bass guitar. So, when the bass plays in the lower register, A0 (note) for example , the compressor is working just fine, the bass is sitting perfect in the mix, but when the bass starts to play higher octaves, notes, they sound much, much louder and are all over the mix. It's like BOOM! I tried different compressors - Waves CLA-76, CLA-3A, CLA-2, C1, tried different settings - attack and release time, but the problem still remains. I can address this problem with an EQ to kill harmonics, or velocities changes, but I don't believe this is the solution. What about if you go Live, play on a concert and this problem occures? How do you address this problem, mate? Thanks for the anwers. Maybe you could do a video about good bass compression and address this particular problem? Would be great!

Ok, good video, but, what about if we just solo a piece on mixer and render the channel? Of course it gonna take much longer, but you'll have a great range control.

You can do that, but you have to remember that the multi-samples the plugin pulls from will be different every time you bounce a separate track down. This might mean that the printed room, overheads and close mics might be using different hits because they weren't bounced simultaneously.

@@FrightboxRecording Actually printed room, close mics and overhead won't change if you solo one piece. It stills like all pieaces are playing. Try it then come back here. I was wondering if your way maybe preserve the volume balance better. Regards from Brazil!

@@xangai87 The individual outputs and sounds don't change, it's the samples that the plugin pulls from that will be different since it's technically pulling from them at different times. When they're all playing at once, all of the samples are being pulled at the same time so they're the same source sounds. It has to do with multisampling and how it randomizes the samples to sound more natural.

So do you just adjust your drum levels within the plugin before rendering? Also, I don't understand FX busses. How would I set up a reverb bus in Reaper and would the sends be pre-fader?
