I just got fitted for the HL irons, and they are honestly mind blowing with how incredible they perform for me. I fit into the slower swing speed category, but I was getting close to 1.49 smash factor with every strike with the 7 iron. I seriously have a hard time understanding how these irons perform so well and how they fly so far for me compared to other models, including the regular Hot Metals, but I am definitely not complaining with the results.
Thanks for watching! For many players, you're right. The HM and HM Pro won't stop. THat's why Mizuno added the HL to the family. But there are also plenty of players in the game-improvement category that generate too much spin, whether it be due to a very steep attack angle or a slice tendency, that would benefit from a lower spinning iron like the HM or HM Pro
I know what you mean. I was fitted for 921 HMP’s during the pandemic and I had to wait 8 weeks. I only got one round in with them before I had to store them away for the winter. Lol. Enjoy your new Mizuno’s. You’re going to love them!
They actually came in 9 days! I have 4 rounds in with them and I have to say, SO PURE! gain 14 yards on each iron as well due to less side spin from my old callaway N415s
I’ve had sets of the JPX 919’s and 921 Hotmetals. My iron swing speed is @77 mph. I would say without a doubt the high launch version would help my game. I like to play a lot of approach shots just past the bunker.
Thanks guys for a club testing around the 80 mph swing speed. I really want to move to Mizuno for my next set and this really helps with the decision making process. Keep up the great work!!
Can you please explain what would happen for similar swing speeds with less compression. Understand ball speed and distance would be lower, but what about spin and landing angle? Thanks.
Very good analysis relevant to senior & mid-handicappers. Not much shaft flex discussion, but 80mph head speed = senior or regular flex! I own 921 HM & will Purchase 923 HM HL!
Great info, appreciate the video. I’ve played the same Mizuno irons for 15 years (MP-37) Love them, but looking forward to upgrading. Going to test JP and the pros, can’t wait to upgrade!
I just think that the lift jacking has reached the point of diminishing returns for most golfers. Thomas’ landing angles with the 7i HM and HM Pro were around 40 degrees…and his speed is way above average! I would have to order these 2 degrees weak to get a reasonable landing angle.
I got fit for HMP at a Mizuno regional fitting center in the UK. 111 ball speed with 7i, stopped at 6i and added a 5i fli hi hybrid with the same steel shaft as the irons. I have a 19 degree hybrid as well. The fitter used a program from Mizuno that recommended this set build, this was based on my DNA swings.
I recently purchased a set of the regular 923 Hot Metals. I am 72 years and a left handed player. I had hoped to try the HL version but unfortunately they are unavailable in lefty. The regular HM’s tested well vs the HL TaylorMade and Callaway models and I went with them. After 2 months I will say that I hit these clubs just as high as my previous MX-23’s and a little longer. Previously, I played a regular flex Dynalite steel shaft and now I have the UST senior flex graphites in the new clubs. In regard to full swing feel, confidence and distance, I am happy so far. What I don’t care for is their performance in the short game. The 46° pitching wedge on my old set was useful inside 100 yards for half and 3/4 swing pitch shots and chipping. The new 42.5° PW is strictly a full swing club and so far it has been useless near the green for me. I regularly used my old 8, 9 and PW for chipping but the new clubs are too hot and distance control has been difficult. In addition, the new set came with a 48° G wedge which is a smaller, blade style head and completely different from all the other cavity back clubs in the set.
@2ndswing I have tried these and I like them. My swing speed is between 65-72 mph. I am just at the border between light or regular shaft (70mph). I am not sure which one to choose... I intend to play a lot more golf in the coming months (1 round every 2 weeks). usually my angle of attack is between 0 to 6 degrees upwards. I wonder if I should go for regular Hot Metal or HL version given my swing speed and angle of attack.Any advice ? thanks.
?? Vosh has been on our channel a few times in the past, regardless of what channel he appears on it's just great to have him educuate you all more - Thomas
That's why Mizuno added the HL model! All of the tech of the HM or HM Pro, but with added loft to provide the necessary spin and launch that many players need
Obviously he's a great striker of the ball....but I did think think spin would be higher...yes they launch high..great landing angle.. forgiving..but spin a bit disappointing.
Add about 800-1000 rpm of spin for when I hit of grass. With my shallow attack angle I don't spin the ball as much as most golfers that swing 80mph - Thomas
Thanks for watching! We had Thomas slow down his swing in this test to more closely match an average player. He still normally swings his 7-iron at approximately 90 MPH
Isn’t this extremely low spinning for a 7 iron? My buddy has the 921 HM and I hit a few balls with them and I loved them so much that I ended up buying them. Should arrive tomorrow but the spin factor does have me a little nervous now. Currently gaming Taylormade RSI 1 which I love but the 921s felt superior compared to them
Club speed and attack angle will influence that spin. With my shallower attack angle and only 80 mph speed the ball will spin low (hence why the HL would be better). It's going to be very hard to get 6000 rpm+ with a 29* 7iron regardless of swing type - Thomas
@@2ndswing appreciate the response back. Thank you. I think I’m gonna throw these in the bag and see how they are. Would you think these would be a good upgrade from the RSi 1? The lofts are pretty much in line, with the 921 HM being stronger by 1 degree or so in some clubs which really isn’t a deal breaker for me
@@2ndswing thanks Thomas! I would assume someone who pulls/draws the ball wouldn’t want the added offset of the HL models. I do appreciate Mizuno’s approach here by going weaker lofted on GI iron!
@@2ndswing the HL 6i vs. the base hot metal 7i might be a better comparison as there is only 0.5 deg loft difference. Really curious why i should go with a strong loft cavity back vs just clubbing down with a standard loft cavity back. Would like to see that comparision to see if theres any noticeable difference.
What didn’t you like about them? I just purchased mine and should arrive tomorrow. I thought they felt great when I was swinging them, but hey that’s just me. For reference, I currently game Taylormade RSi 1s. I’m just curious your input on them
Pretty good looking clubs, but almost 2 clubs stronger lofted than my current ToylorMade R9 toour preferred. Looking forward to seeing the Wilson D9 forged pitted against these 923 Hot Metal Pro irons, similar looks, but slightly less loft for the Wilsons.
Hi Thomas fantastic test👌, stunning 80mph with full release👍, Just amazing you wouldn’t know your normal swing speed is 90mph, (don’t see this speed control) with other reviews, Thanks Thomas Dickey 9hcp 75year Senior Golfer😃
