Mizuno JPX921 Hot Metal vs Ping G425 showing just how different or similar design brief both these models are. Possibly an unfair comparison due to the Hot Metal being the largest Game Improvement iron in Mizuno's range where Ping has the G710.

I just started playing golf again after a 10 year hiatus. I needed more distance over my old irons. I am in my mid 60’s now. I do not like super chunky or a lot of offset. I ended up with the JPX 921 Hot Metal Pro after hitting just about everything. They just checked all the boxes for me. I am very pleased with these irons.

Hey, just a comment on an older video review. I was looking at the G425, JPX 923 HM and the Ping G430 when I came across this review. You are easily the best reviewer as you explain in detail the difference between clubs without getting lost in all the OEM tech hype. Never show bias and great graphs and also how when doing an X vs X you go between both repeatedly for a fair comparison. Some of the other crazy high subscriber numbers need to take a lesson from your channel. One last thing and hope you don’t mind. I, like yourself and most people I think have a hard time to repeatedly slow down your swing for a comparison. If I try to it’s just as bad as trying to swing as fast as Rory. Just a mess!! BUT…. I have found a channel, 2nd Swing Golf with fitter Thomas Campbell based in Minnesota. He is excellent at adjusting his swing and doing it consistently. So if you have a more average amateur SS, check out some of their videos. He usually only does those type for the true GI irons. Your channel though is now my first go to one. 👍

Thanks for the video I was one of the ones that asked for a comparison. I’m a lefty and Mizuno doesn’t give a lot of options this year for left handers. I have the 921 hot metals and really like them. I’ve tried many different irons and always go back to Mizunos. They truly don’t make a bad iron. Ping also makes great irons but they always look too offset and chunky to me for some reason. Thanks again for a great and honest review as always.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the video. As a natural lefty myself but play right handed I can understand the issues that left handers face. It's purely down to the size of the market and the costs involved with making left handed molds. Mizuno and others manufacturers would love to make more of their line-up accessible to left handers but they barely break even with doing it the way they do so any additional models would effectively be cutting into their profits made from the right handed market. Sad I know but I guess that's the price we lefties have always paid living in a right handed world. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Thanks for these videos. Due to lockdown I have watched a lot of videos. I’m a 10 to 12 Hcap and have jumped from thinking of Launcher HB irons to Wilson launch pads to radspeeds etc but the one set that sticks out is the mizuno. The whole package just looks excellent. The driver, fairway wood, hybrids and these irons just look the real deal. And with the mizuno DNA fitting system you mentioned before it really looks like you and get the Perfect combo. AND the choice of shafts/grips available for no upcharge is sensational. AND they are priced better than the other big names! Fantastic stuff. Now I just hope I can hit them!!! Thanks again! Ping makes amazing forgiving clubs. But at the end of day, you must get fitted to know which clubs are best for your game. I like Ping bc they are so forgiving for my swing and the obnoxious sound is so attractive to my ears. They are loud like ... you know... bedroom noise. Every shot is a good shot. And every good shot is a satisfying feeling. 🤪

I tried both and chose the Mizuno 921 HM Pro and am very happy with them. I am a 8 handicap and simply hit the Mizuno more consistently than the Pings. I also didn’t like the Ping gouge out in the hosel and the thicker top edge but those features obviously did not affect the strike which was very good as well. As you say, try both.

Excellent vid - I find your reviews the most insightful, and useful, on RU-vid. I have picked up that "forgiveness" needs to be positioned against whether one's mishits tend to be heel or toe, and/or high or low. Suspect most mid/high handicappers are not sure which they tend to do - and your reviews will lead them (me) to thinking about this. So thanks for illuminating, data led, "forgiveness". I believe you have said, in the past, that you are (for yourself) shaft agnostic? For me, that is the next big mystery. I have seen some reviews that seem to overturn traditional views on the perceived merits of flex and weight etc. My current irons' graphite shafts were chosen via the Mizuno's Shaft Optimiser (the first version) - and I have simply specified the same shafts for my wedges and utilities. Do you use the Optimiser for your Mizuno fittings? Do you find shafts are a major factor for regular mid/high handicap golfers?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 года назад
Definitely always use the Swing DNA in all my fittings regardless if it's Mizuno or another manufacturer. Having a measured understanding of physical bend profile cuts unnecessary time during a fitting "finding" the correct shaft and thus gives my client more time to compare iron heads with differing CG locations. Shafts can and do make a huge difference to how a club feels to the golfer handicap or no, but also can have a huge impact on how the individual releases and understands where the face is relative to path. I would only ever fit using every piece of technology available to ensure the client who's paying good money for his equipment, the best possible experience. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

I played a combo 919 H/Metal set. My first Mizuno products. I really liked them. I’ just switched to the Ping G425 and I think this is the eighth set of Ping irons I’ve gamed since the i3 blades in or around 2000. These remind me very much of one of my favorite Ping clubs; the i25. I don’t think you can go wrong with either of these irons; both are great. I am very accustomed to the look, sound, and feel of Ping irons and the new 425’s hit all the boxes for me. Age 64 and I play somewhere around a 10-14.

I was at Edwin Watts in Jax Fl today and I noticed that they had a ton of used Mizuno irons including several sets of JPX 921 Hot metals. I wonder why so many people are getting rid of these clubs?? My guess is that even though these are Mizuno's Game Improvement irons, they really aren't as forgiving for average golfers as Ping. There was only a couple sets of Ping G410's & G425's and a couple sets of Ping I blades.

@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 года назад
Every year its pushing limits bit by bit with better metallurgy and design. From one model to the other it would be marginal changes only really realised over a season. It's when you have the 10 year old set (classic average golfer coming in for a Custom Fitting) which sees the monumental improvements depending on swing characteristics and strike tenancies. The equipment is expensive, and doesn't cost any more with it being custom built so I would never understand why someone wouldn't get the best possible option fro their purchase 👍 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

That and many other manufacturers do very good game improvement irons but for me and not just me (most of the independent custom fittings) the slightly softer feel of the Mizunos make some people sway that way. I guess it's the same discussion when it comes to the individual golfers preference for soft or hard golf balls. Most prefer soft, so any manufacturer that produces equipment that performs equal to others yet produce a product that feels softer than most will get the decision. You've done absolutely right with your choice for the performance and your wants, I hope you enjoy them for years to come 👍 Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Hi Linda under normal conditions of only hitting very few shots during a fitting / testing session I would totally agree. Although with these tests I hit a large dataset with both to show any potential tendencies so any difference in true dispersion trends could be seen. @jdavis6650
@jdavis6650 3 года назад
So the outlier released 6 feet more than average, right? For the past 5-7 years, like-lofted Ping irons tends to launch higher with less spin than their competitors. While its convenient to isolate spin rate as a barometer, a better measure is to consider spin rate AND angle of descent. If you consistently hit the CoG then the carry/roll discrepancy disappears. Those of us who are concerned with this are not playing golf for fun, but for money. Only play Ping if performance and resale are important to you. Otherwise make your ego happy. For a minute.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 года назад
Hi there, the outlier released to 187 yards which is 7 yards or 21 feet longer than the Average. It was also fortunate that it was straight enough to catch the very back edge of the green which took some sting out of it, if it had missed either left or right then the lower descent angle to the average would have meant an even larger kick forward. Also another angle to consider which I didn't in the video mainly to time constraints would be that the outlier spun at 3000 rpm at my speed, put the same miss-hit in a slower singers hands who spins the ball much less just because of their speed and 3000 would turn to 2000 which isn't enough for a ball at a slow launch speed and angle to retain any kind of flight and fall out of the sky then becoming much much shorter than the averages. Basically it's just there as a talking point that you guys need to be aware of when you go to test out equipment, that's all I can try to do as a reviewer is to open people's eyes to possibilities which then you can take to your tests/fittings for a more educated open minded experience. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Difference seems to be in the strike location on the face - lower on the Mizuno gives you slightly higher spin. Would be interesting to know if this is being caused by the MIzuno's sole preventing the club from digging on the turf as bunch as the Ping's - or is it the increased offset of the Ping. If Mizuno can make a club that doesn't have a large 'crack' sound when you hit it, then Ping should be able to do it as well.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 года назад
The split in location looks much larger on the foresight comparison screen (still haven't fixed it yet). Their was 5mm difference in vertical strike between both sets and as its an iron its minimal gearing. The Pings as a rule have much larger bounce angles than Mizunos which in effect lower the strike on the Ping with the bounce interfering. But these are such small numbers it's marginal at best 👍 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Neither really as if I did this test again today the Ping might beat it, or may not. They are so close and also the Hot Metal is Mizuno’s answer to the G710 which is Pings ultimate high flighted forgiving iron. As said at the start the G425 and HM isn't really a fair comparison, it should be against G710. The HM Pro is a bit more of a fair comparison which is coming very soon. Great clubs but looking for a bit more forgiveness. REALLY have to focus to hit these consistent. Becomes a bit laborious. Have to choose between the Hot Metal pro with heavier Project X LZ stock black shaft or Hot Metal with it's lighter Nippon Neo shaft. Certainly not as consistent as your ball striking but very similar speed and carry #s. Leaning towards lighter shaft and Hot Metal. (Looks like you were hitting with non stock KBS shaft) Thoughts?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 года назад
Hi Scott, difficult to answer as it's impossible to give you an idea without knowing more about you, your game and your tenancies in strike. The Hot Metals are marginally more forgiving but its near on impossible to tell the real differences. The Pros with a slightly sturdier bend profile may be better for someone with a faster swing but again without knowing far more about your swing it's a wild stab in the dark. I'd say though on balance if you swing as fast as me then the Pro would be the better option. Trying to get them setup in your correct lie angle though would equally be as important. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Great club but off center hits not the greatest. Saw Paige Spirinac who is pro go to non pro version stating she just wanted most forgiving which makes sense to me. Obviously she doesn't have the same swing speed. Was just worried that the Neo would be too light. Looking at your videos on both it seems like you got higher trajectory with only loss of 3 yd average with non pro but you were using a heavier shaft than Neo. Even in my junior days I struggled a little with high handle, toe down delivery. So I naturally developed a slightly more leant over posture that would give me more room for my hands to pass my hips. The Hot Metal might be a touch larger but the difference in marginal at best. The Hot Metal Pro is slightly smaller than the G425. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Still it was very close and the HM are really Mizuno’s answer to the G710 which is Pings ultimate launch machine. The HM Pro is a better comparison which CG location relative to the face is more like for like. Review being edited and uploading soon. Let's see who wins that battle... 😊 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

All of your data shows your lie is toe down by a couple of degrees, more upright lie angle on future sets?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 2 года назад
Hi Matthew, being honest I didn't have the two clubs available in 0 lie angle, so for me to keep the comparison as equal as possible I did have them in effective 2 degrees too flat so at least if any discrepancy in dispersion or initial launch direction then it would be equal in both and a true comparison between the two. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate the time taken to critique the head data as it is important to show what differences if any between the head technologies. 👍

You cannot take that one bad shot or possible misread at 3000 backspin to explain anything. Essentially these two clubs are exactly the same. And who gives a stuff about the sound or the styling?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut 3 года назад
Mikey, firstly it's a pattern that I've seen with repeated high strikes so the misread idea is debunked. The spin would be even lower with a slower swing causing a serious drop in distance. This is only meant to show what is good and not about the club in question regardless what it brings up. On the whole apart from the sound (which is subjective) the G425 is a really well performing iron and many will be happy to play them. Secondly when it comes to looks feel and sound, many people care about it, rightly or wrongly. Sometimes it's a major buying criteria that people have when deciding what product to buy... 👍

@@AskGolfNut thanks for your response. I just meant that the poor reading was so far off the average I would discount it. Feel, I completely agree with. And of course you’re right to say some people do care about looks and sound.... Great review.

sounds bias since your wearing that mizuno hat
@AskGolfNut

Hi Black Birdie Golf, for this reason I always give head data to corroborate any findings. No different I guess if I choose a Callaway hat in a Callaway video or Ping etc etc. Not enough reviews out there that give detailed head data analysis. Without it, anyone could just swing the club faster and hit that club longer than the other. Honest data leads to honest opinions 👍

That's the beauty of having two opposing companies offering similar performance in 2 different ways is that everyone has choice. As many people will adamantly choose one or the other and that's perfectly fine. They both make very good equipment. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
