He was a poor boy from a bootleggers’ town in the Texas backwoods. She was a cotton-picking Mississippi girl dreaming of stardom in Nashville. Together, George Jones and Tammy Wynette became the first power couple in country music. They were perfect in the public eye, but their tumultuous relationship was punctuated by George’s alcohol-fueled escapades and his paranoia over Tammy’s romantic past. She tried to keep the marriage from turning toxic, singing “Stand By Your Man,” her greatest hit, onstage with her husband every night.

I was recording on the same album and in the same day as George. Peanut came in with him. Jones seemed more cheerful every time he and Peanut returned from the rest room. I learned later that Peanut was loaded down with single shot bottles of liquor - the sort you get on airplanes. I think Jones finally got his drinking mostly under control but he never truly quit the stuff - unless it was after that wreck that nearly killed him.

I went to work for 7-11 back in the late 70's and part of the interview process was a polygraph. Back then I was up to my eyeballs in drug dealing and the criminal activity that went with it. Don't know if I passed the polygraph but I did get the job.
