I had a shop try to con me into an axle + CV swap by saying "the axle just fell out" when I had them replace the left front wheel hub. Seems normal to me as seen here. My girl would let go of the axle squatted in his lift bay a few days as payback. Ended up with a new CV boot instead.
ECS has great DIY videos. Comprehensive, easy to understand and a simple follow along. I often have my ipad beside me as I’m working to refer to in case of issue.
No need to mess with ball joints or control arms on an mk5. Plenty of room to remove the (4) 12mm triple square bolts by simply turning the stearing wheel. And buy a slide hamer for $7 at a garage sale to pull that hub. Lol
You have to replace the 3 nuts under the arm exactly in the same place. You can take a picture or mark with a marker. these 3 nuts affect the camber so its recommended to do an alignement
Pretty sure the torque on the lower ball joint nuts is 60 Nm, not 100. I set it to 100 based on this video and could feel one stripping. 2 other sources said it should be 60
It depends. If that lower control arm is cast steel it gets 60 Nm, if it is sheet steel or cast aluminum it gets 100 Nm. This is per the VW shop manuals. It's confusing, but I guess they like to keep us on our toes lol.
There is an easier way. There are videos on RU-vid how to remove stuck bearings or rotors, same method, different press point. Use a couple bolts and nuts, easy peasy.
