When filling with oil, note the following: - Remove oil plug . - Fill with gear oil to lower edge of filler hole. - Screw in plug . - Start engine, engage gear and allow gearbox to turn for ap‐ prox. 2 minutes. - Stop engine and remove plug. - Top up with gear oil to lower edge of filler hole. - Tighten bolt to specified torque
This is great! Something to add, a few transmissions don’t have a fill hole (not clowning you). You have to fill from the selector bolt under the air box
Always remove the fill plug first. If you drain it and then for some reason can't remove the fill plug then you're fucked. And the oil will come out the bottom smoother. You're not likely to run into any problems removing the fill plug yet as the mk7 is still new but it's a good practice. The procedure is the exact same for mk5 and I assume mk6 as well.
I ran into this issue with an R32 gtr I used to have, trying to replace transfer case fluid. Luckily I did try to remove the filler plug first, proceeded to break every tool I had on it before giving up.
But the problem is that none of us have that uber pricey vehicle lift. Those are not cheap and most homes have no space for them. Even with ramps, it's a big challenge climbing under the car to undo all those bolts holding the damn air deflector in place just to drain tranny fluid.
Great tutorial! Made it so much easier for me to do this myself. That being said, I tried the Motul Gear 300 and can say that I don't recommend it if you mostly daily drive this car with the occasional spirited run. It's VERY NOTCHY (especially if you have race gear bushings vs stock) and takes a long time before it warms up and smooths out for gear shifts. Sometimes I have to really put some effort into simply getting it in second gear. I'm planning on going back to the OEM oil.
@@bushmaster1740go to ECS tuning almost all the manual trans fluid for this car is 75w-90, there's only a few options that are 75 flat, motul 300 is perfectly fine for this car
For my car many service manuals say that you fill the fluid until it starts dripping... close the filler plug... run the car in gear for 5 minutes... let it sit for a couple of minutes and re-check the fluid level from the filler plug... if it starts dripping the level is OK.. if not add some fluid until it starts dripping again !!! And in my opinion this is the best way to be 100% sure that the fluid quantity is correct. (although usually it doesnt need much... hardly any) Another method is to very slightly overfill it (close the plug before the fluid starts dripping all out)... run the procedure again... and let the extra fluid come out the 2nd time you pull out the filler plug. (I am from Europe so my car isnt available in the US but its a VW Group car)
Oil cand make a huge difference in performance. Motul engine oils are great as well. In my opinion they're even greater than Castrol. I'm currently using 10W60 in my Audi, but I'm planning to switch to 5W50 from Motul.
Some awesome information Shop DAP could share with you but do not, is that some 2017+ GTI's for some god forsaking reason don't come with a fill plug. So before you drain the gear oil from the bottom, make sure you have a fill plug on the side. I almost shit my pants when I discovered this the hard way. There is however a solution and that involves removing the air filter box and battery tray to expose a black 21mm plastic selector bolt that's above the reverse sensor switch on the top of the transmission. Very carefully remove that bolt and add exactly the same amount of oil you removed back in through that hole where you removed the plastic bolt. You will need a clear hose 3/4 in diameter about 18-20 inches long and a funnel. Shove the hose in the hole and slowly start filling. You will need some patience for this part, it's a slow process but it beats the alternative flatbed tow truck trip to the stealership. That WILL cost you over $1000.00
Too funny, I just did mine trans fluid. I'm at 40k. Question. Engine oil leak? Only ask because of the oil on the engine side of the bell-housing. Love the videos keep them up.
I recently purchased a 2015 TDI (88k)with the 6 - speed manual. Would you guys recommend the Motul 300 as well? I'm also considering the kerma tune but use this car as a daily because it's the most fuel efficient vehicle in my fleet.
I own golf 7 variant 2014 1.6 tdi with manual gearbox. It got more that 180000 km so far. Do You think it is worth to chane oil, as I am goint to keep the car for next 6 years? Is fresh fuchs oil better that old but original vw oil?In other word, do You recommend change oil or not?
I have a 2015 VW Jetta TDI 6 speed. At 60,000 miles the dealer damaged the transmission during a service and replaced it with a new factory transmission. This new factory transmission does not have a fill hole bolt on the side, like the original transmission. Has the dealer gave me the wrong transmission?
Good morning, first of all I want to congratulate you and thank you for your contributions because they have been of great help to me. I currently have a seat ateca 4drive. I service the haldex 5 every 40000kms but I still haven't done anything about the gears and I think it's time with just over 100000kms. I intend to do transfer case gear oil change service together with rear group. What type of oil do you recommend for this service? a greeting
Is there any kind of break in period for new fluid? Like a point where the fluid smooths out? I changed the fluid in my Mk7 gti at 100k to redline MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 gear oil. I'm just wondering if it will take some amount of time to be buttery smooth because right know it's better but still what I would call very notchy.
Here's an idea; How about since you know its 2.3L fill, do two 2 bottles as you suggest, then cut the bottom off the second bottle while still in position and pour .3 litters in it to complete the fill. Another idea, if you don't have a lift, use a hand oil pump from underneath.
I have a GTI MK6 with 110k miles you guys think that is safe to change the oil Trasmision? A lot of people say no because has a lot of miles right know
I have a question for you guys. I have a 2006 soda octavia vrs hear in the uk. it has a 2.0tfsi bwa engine, same as some mk5 gti golf's, it currently has 86,000 miles on the clock and the gear box is a bit clunky, and crunches from 1st to second occationaly. my question is, at what milages interval should you replace the transition oil, and what fluid would you use?( it is a 6 speed manual.) I'm struggeling to find info on the subject and the dealer I went to was useless. as always love the channel. thanks, kieran
Hi Shop DAP, I just have one quick question about my 17 mk7 GTI. I recently found out that there is a (rattling noise?) which sounds like (woah woah woah), not very loud that comes straight from the dash panel (the center screen in between the speedometer and the rpm) when my car is going on a certain speed (about 110km/h). The frequency and the loudness will increase as the speed goes higher. What kindda problem could it possibly be? I took it to the dealership and they test drove my car and they said they couldn't hear anything. I will be going on a long road trip across Canada days later so I just wanna make sure that my car is fine. PLZ help. Appreciated!!!! ( im 100% sure its not the soundaktor.)
I've just watched this great tutorial in preparation for changing the gearbox oil on my manual 2018 MK7.5 Golf R - However, there is no fill plug on my car in the position it's supposed to be! It looks like a slightly different version of gearbox - the casing has no hole for filling, but the drain plug is as show in this tutorial It's an SRD gearbox with CJXG engine. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I'm supposed to put the new oil in and get the correct level? Many thanks.
Paul, I followed this method for a fluid change on my wife’s 06 2.5l Beetle, but it only took less than 1 liter before dripping and I can’t find the spec for this transaxle anywhere. Is the Beetle really that small of a capacity?
Hello all! I have a 2013 VW CC that has a trans leak coming from the trans housing and I'm being told that is cant be resealed because "VW doesn't do that". I am just checking to see how true that is.
Do you have a video on clutch adjustment for 2012 VW? I want to do this and short shifter very soon and just feel like my clutch pedal feels a little loose.
You mentioned that Motul Gear 300 was not good for a daily driver. I have never heard that before. It only gets positive reviews. I have been running it in my WRX which is my daily driver for the past 5000 miles and I have not noticed it to be a problem. It is the preferred gear oil in the Subaru community. I would think it would also be safe to run in the GTI as a daily driver.
Thank you for the reply. I guess I don't completely know what you mean by cold temperature operations. For example, are you saying it is not appropriate for cold climates or that it is not effective at start up until everything gets up to temp? I just hadn't heard of anyone avoiding Motul Gear 300 in cold climates or having any negatives about start-up for daily use. Your videos are very informative and you always handle yourself in a professional manner. Thank you for teaching us.
Hello Paul, first of all I want to congratulate you on your channel, your videos are very helpful with the maintenance of my gti mk7, now a request, can you make a video of the service to the DSG gearbox? greetings and thanks
I'm interested in buying a manual or Dsg golf 7 gti 2013 or 2014 Golf gti km 60000 to 80000km. Wich is the better transmission and wich is more durable? I heard there is a lot of problems with the dsg gearbox because of guys launching it too much and then getting dsg problems. I also will be going stage 1 software upgrade later, but I heard on the manual gearbox you need to upgrade the clutch plate going on stage 2 and dsg tune stage 2? So wich gearbox would be the better option for performance and durability in the long run?
IMO the manual trans is the better trans for the GTI. I drove both when i was considering and ended up buying a manual transmission because the DSG just had no feel. Yeah its quick and easier to drive but not by much. A manual trans is just more fun and this transmission in particular is really easy to live with and drive every day.
So I just had an incident today the cv axle screws gave up dislocated and fell onto the transmission causing a hole… all of the fluid came out , can anyone help where I can get another side piece for the transmission rather than buying the whole thing ?
School boy error draining oil and not checking if filler plug will come undone. Also when you remove filler plug in the same time as drain plug ,the oil will drain quicker
Your dealer should stop doing his job. Manual 6 gear trans in GTI mk6 needs 2.3 liter of oil. The same capacity is for mk7 and as far as i know its the same for mk5.
The procedure on my Mk1 Rabbit and Mk3 Jetta were the same as what’s shown here in the video for the Mk7 so I assume it’s the same in the Mk6 too. Here’s a link to a video about Mk6 Golf R 6-speed gear oil change. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W9iNjwq-VLg.html
Guys, this is the WRONG fluid for these cars. You want to use a GL4 oil not GL4/GL5 combo. Also, straight 75w is the correct weight, NOT 75w-90. You are not doing any favors using this particular oil in your car.
More or less. This GEAR OIL is twice as thick as VW oem fluid. 75w-90 is dead wrong for manual trans. get some Synchromesh, and you will love it. Also it's "notchy" because GEAR OIL has friction modifiers that don't let the synchros grab and engage property. This guy is a clown for selling such an inappropriate fluid.
This video is basically a template for how to F up your manual trans fluid fill. VW oem MTF is super thin, as thin as ATF. DON'T use 75w-90 that's TWICE as thick. Dipshit tuner shops have no clue about what they sell their customers, they use it because of the name brand. You want a midweight GL-4 like (Pennzoil) Synchromesh or Redline MTL around 10cSt visc. Also, don't use GL-5 GEAR OIL or a combo GL-4/5, it's too slick for synchros to engage properly. Usually I use PZ Synchromesh, but Valvoline MTF is dirt cheap on Amazon. I'm about to do the refill on my wife's tuned Sportswagen. Remember, the best fluid is SLIGHTLY thicker than oem VW to take the extra HP of an engine mod and quiet the trans down. Double the visc at 75w-90 means hard shifting in the cold, and GL-5 gear oil means crunching synchros. I seriously can't believe these tuner shop clowns haven't figured this out yet. Just look up the VW fill, it's the same 6cSt as ATF (or even thinner). Synchromesh has a long development history and excellent track record. www.amazon.com/Valvoline-Synchromesh-Manual-Transmission-Fluid/dp/B071YBH8P1/ref=sr_1_5
Redline has an excellent White Paper on the subject: www.redlineoil.com/Content/files/tech/Manual_Transmission_Tech_6.20_.pdf www.redlineoil.com/Content/files/tech/MTL_GO_PROD_INFO_2020.pdf
I recently replaced my gearbox oil with the OEM option (VW part number G 052 527 A2) which is, like you say, very thin. I did this to try to improve the notchy change from 1st to 2nd when cold. It has improved a little but still isn't quite right. Once the car has warmed up it improves a lot. I'm in the UK and honestly it's never really super cold or super hot here. Would you recommend I try one of the oils you mentioned? Pennzoil Synchromesh, Valvoline Synchromesh, Red Line MTL?
