Was totally going to get one, but after seeing this video, I decided against it. Sheesh.

Great video. I wish they showed the final position of the retaining springs from under the car. Note that on a Golf R, don't bother getting under the car. All of the AWD stuff is in the way and you won't be able to get to the turbo blanket from underneath. Totally doable from the topside. The installation was not bad at all. Good tip about leaving the driver's side of the blanket snapped together and then tucking everything down and around.

I had to drop a subframe for other fix. Put the TB on from under the car while SF was out. Super E-A-S-Y this way. No ball-allens, nothing additional to unscrew or meddle with. Excellent access and visibility.

How many here have spent $140-$200 for a new battery on a 2-year old car? I just did. This seems like a pretty good investment for that alone. The UH temps are torrid.

The shield over the axle is not for axle grease spraying it’s a heat shield. The turbo blanket will help keep heat off the axle boot too so that’s another plus
@LynxStarAuto
@LynxStarAuto 6 лет назад
Bat Man naw. It's exactly for grease spray. These axles love to regurgitate grease, and grease slinging up into the turbo is a major hazard. Sure it also protects the axle from heat, but that was just an added bonus. The VW engineers saw what crap the boots are on these axles, and knew they needed a way to deflect debris away from that steaming hot turbo.

Hi Paul, based on the video it appears you and I had similar frustrations with our install. I had mine while installing a new downpipe and it was still an hour of work despite Forge saying more like 15 minutes. Not a lot of room back there! Thanks for the video.

I'm having a hard time installing this on a mk7gti pp. The oem downpipe and cat, plus the differential block the access and visibility from underneath. This means having to work from the top "blindly". Is there any video or images from the installation from the back of the turbo so I can see how it should be fitted?

Since this item is there for long, are there any concerns or evidence regarding long term issues caused by using a turbo blanket in a golf mk gti?

What's the chances that this could catch fire?

Pretty much not at all. The materials are non flammable. If it gets soaked with oil or fuel, that's a different story.

it'd be great to have a follow up how it works and what difference it makes. It seems like a good amount of effort to get it installed..

Did it on my car. Temps were way down at the drag strip. Don't want to spam a link but there are YT videos showing the benefits with a Forge Tubo Blanket on YT.

The University of Texas @ Austin had a great article in 2014 about reviewing a PTP Turbo blanket on a Cummins diesel. Its a good read, conclusion was it does show benefits for spool up time and that oil-cooking was a non-issue.

While it would be a good deal more work and time, would it be worth it to have the turbine housing ceramic coated inside and out, in addition to the blanket?

Great video, will this blanket work with an Audi Q5. I believe the GTI has the same 2.0T, except my engine is longitudinal so the install should be a lot easier if this fits. I can easily get to my turbo on the passenger side. Thinking less heat near the intake charge pipe heading to intercooler would be good. Thanks.

Do supercars use turbo blankets, I think not? My guess extra turbo wear.
@futt-bucker
@futt-bucker 5 лет назад
Supercars don't use turbo blankets.........because 99.9% of supercars aren't turbo charged, genius...
@pedrorodrigueztube
@pedrorodrigueztube 5 лет назад
@@futt-bucker ok genius why the ones that do use turbos, why they don't use turbo blankets. Many like Porshe, McLaren, Pagani, also Ferraris and even Bugatti use turbos. Real racing/tunning companies don't push those things. My guess is that a turbo blanket will add some (x) more degrees and that will cause more wear than is built for.
@futt-bucker
@futt-bucker 5 лет назад
@@pedrorodrigueztube generally Porsches aren't considered supercars. They have very few. Also, supercars with turbos are running 20k+$ turbo chargers. Take that for what you will. Lastly, if you look online, many supercar owners with boost are running blankets. No they don't come standard, but they are used. The r35 has a special "heat package" you can get with it that uses a turbo blanket. In fact, I read most turbo supercars that have serious driving owners, run turbo blankets, simply because of the heat they produce, if for nothing else. Not to mention, some of the cars u stated run turbos. Not all McLaren, Ferrari, Bugatti,ect. Run them. It's is still a very small percentage collectively in the supercar community. Most even run header blankets and wraps
@pedrorodrigueztube
@pedrorodrigueztube 5 лет назад
@@futt-bucker saying just a very small % use turbo, really doesn't mean anything. Just because they are so few why the heck waste money on a turbo blanket, I don't get your point. Whether the 911 Turbo or the GT-R nismo are supercars or not. They perform like one, and why they don't come with t blankets? Hell not even the 911 GT2 RS which is build for track and has a water spray system to cool the intercooler
@futt-bucker
@futt-bucker 5 лет назад
@@pedrorodrigueztube why don't they come with street radials? Or meth injection? Or come standard with NOS? Or how about 2-step? Why don't they come with wings? I don't get your point. Everything on a car car from factory can be improved..... This would be one of those improvements, just like any other aftermarket part. there is absolutely no evidence that a turbo blanket adds extra wear to a turbo or can cause a catastrophic failure.... There is however, evidence that it improves performance and and lowers engine bay heat all around. Again, I don't get your point. And by saying small percentage means nothing, how do you figure? There is a reason lambos strictly run naturally aspirated. There is a reason these "supercar" companies have 1 or 2 cars that are boosted out of their entire lineup of vehicles(besides Porsche which again, is hardly a supercar brand). And most supercars that run boost, only have v8s. That is MOST... Considering Porsche a supercar brand because they have one model that can compete on a track is like calling Honda a supercar brand because they made the nsx....
