For all your genuine VW parts needs including mail order to UK and overseas, check out Deutsche Parts;

Part number for kit is 5G2054634A
www.deutsche-parts.co.uk/vw-g...
In this 45 minute video I show you how to fit a genuine lowline VW retrofit rear camera kit to your Mk7 or Mk7.5 (Mk7 facelift) VW Golf. This process will vary compared to others on the internet as some are fitting used parts and/or looms not made by VW. Also the process is slightly different for left hand drive vehicles, primarily because the fusebox and infotainment control unit are on opposite sides, while for RHD they are both on the left (it's unusual for RHD have benefits but that's a good one!).
While this is a supposedly inferior lowline unit, it's still very good and the lack of the highline version's markers on the screen that change with the steering angle means it does not need costly calibration by a VW dealer. Also VW don't offer a retrofit highline version, just this one. FYI VW charge £605 on a supply and fit basis, if you can get this kit which is currently on back order, you can save at least half of that by fitting it yourself.
*PLEASE NOTE SOME EARLY MK7 GOLFS MAY NOT HAVE THE FACILITY IN THE INFOTAINMENT UNIT TO DISPLAY REAR VIEW CAMERA IMAGES - BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION YOU SHOULD ATTEMPT TO CODE THE 5F INFOTAINMENT UNIT AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE VIDEO - IF IT CAN ACCEPT THE CODING THEN YOU ARE GOOD TO GO*

Fitted a highline camera to both of my Golf R's. Second car came with the optional reverse camera but I still replaced it, highline has better image quality and having the wide-angle mode is great. Other benefit is the camera can be enabled when not in reverse, so when maneuveuring the image will stay on till you reach 15mph ish.
@Vladd3
@Vladd3 3 месяца назад
And if you connect that cable which is as a switch on/off for the reverse camera to the rear parking sensors instead of connection to reverse light? I suppose the image will stay same as sensors? i am asking, I did not try this yet. I discuss about that AM reverse camere.
@TomCuthbertson
@TomCuthbertson 3 месяца назад
@@Vladd3 Yeah I don't see why you couldn't rewire the lowline sensor cable to a switch rather than the reverse light
@Vladd3
@Vladd3 3 месяца назад
@@TomCuthbertson i was saying this because you told about some benefits between AM and OEM. That benefit with enable when not in Reverse I think can be possible also with an AM camera. The most important difference from my point of view is the total cost for this retrofit. L.E: I found another solution: installing a delay box enables this feature same as oem camera when you put the gear in D, the camera remains 8-10sec and it shows the image.

My reversing camera (factory option on my 7.5 GTI Performance) beeps and the auto brakes stops it from hitting whatever I'm reversing into. Obvs yours doesn't have sensors so a reversing camera is vital tbh. Good work on it Andrew 🖖

One comment from me as I’m doing this job now is buy some spare trim clips. On my 5 door golf I managed to deform at least three clips when removing, and then when replacing, the trim panel that goes vertically up from sill level to rear seat top. This one was particularly troublesome! Also good to note that if you are doing the job in separate sittings it’s best to remember that the rear hatch release will not work until the full job is done. 😂

Great video again Andrew, I do like a good retrofit!😁, I once retrofitted full factory spec, genuine Adaptive HID headlights, to my halogen headlighted MK6 GTI, that was a big job with a lot of loom, and a lot of coding, and I probably wouldn’t do that particular retrofit again! I did however consider fitting the same kit as in the video to my Mk7 GTI, but as mine was also a 3dr, the amount of trim removal put me off, having now viewed your video, I probably should have done it really.👌 I personally would have replaced the drain hose though, as they go brittle, and having been removed and refitted are prone to dropping off and filling the bottom of the tailgate with water! 😫
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 11 месяцев назад
Thanks Charles! Headlight retrofit sounds pretty hardcore, the thought of wiring up those level sensors front and back makes me feel a bit ill! I'll keep an eye on that drain tube, seemed to go back on OK with a fair bit of resistance so hopefully won't pop off but I will keep an eye out for it. I think if you can get your head around removing the side trim panel on a 3 door then it's not too bad, after all VW fit them pretty quickly in the factory - I do wonder if that clip that was bent was from the factory as there is no reason why it would be bent from removal

Great video - have no idea how you managed to get it done - good job all round. I'm on the verge of buying a 7.5 GTI PP with the Nav Pro, but no RVC so was very interesting in this, but I think this is too much for me - maybe I'll give it a go one day. Been using your old content on the GTI to inform the cars I'm looking at. Leather and DCC are a rare combi for sure!
@volkswizard

Glad the vids helped with your purchase Jonathan. I guess the main message of the video is if you want an RVC it can be done whether DIY or by the pros, either way it's good value for money. Leather and DCC are indeed super rare and much harder to retrofit :)
@jonathanphang
@jonathanphang 11 месяцев назад
@@volkswizard I think I could definitely do it - probably the thing holding me back is not fitting the trim back properly, or breaking clips etc, or introducing rattles. It does look very doable. If I manage to pick up the GTI that I want then I might leave it a while before I attempt it. Fingers crossed I come back to this in the future and give it a go! Would you bother with it if you already had rear sensors? Keep up the good work - am loving your content

It’s the one thing I miss on my current car, an Audi S3 8v…a reversing camera. Having watched this video I’m encouraged that I could have one fitted but looking at the wiring I don’t think I’ve got the ability to install one myself…I’ll use a professional! Keep up the good work Andrew, I’ve long been a fan of Volkswizard since my mk2 golf, my first car…i was always looking at your website in the early noughties for a mk2 gti big bumper but I was always going to be too young for insurance! 😂

Thanks Benny! Well it's interesting you liked Mk2s all that time ago and are now in an S3 8v which is in many ways the modern day equivalent. For most people whose time is precious, using a professional is undoubtedly the way to go I think. Unfortunately I don't think this video encourages much DIY but it does make the professional installer charges seem very good value for money :)

The patience you show here is miraculous- I was hoping for a plug and play solution and was even considering for my Megane as I have the 265 Cup which got the rear park sensors but not the camera the premium got but after watching this no way hose A. I’d rather repair or replace rear bumper 😝. I would have thought the wiring would be in situ and not require so much retrofitting- labour for this job would be huge - maybe just me as my AC evaporator has failed and A$6k (2k labour) quote to replace has me wishing for your skill set as dash out job 🎯👏👍🤪

@volkswizard 11 месяцев назад
I think Audi used to fit the wiring on the B5 A4 for odd things like CD changers in case you wanted to fit one but this rare. Back in the day the big job on Mk4 Golf was running the cable for your boot mounted CD changer - same old same old in many way! Importing a bumper from France and painting it in that yellow **so it matches** must cost a fair bit - just as well you've got the sensors! As for patience, this was filmed over 3 days (possibly 4 with the testing) and my patience was most certainly being tested after day 3 especially when it came to refitting the rear side panel - got better after I removed the sodding bar - should have done that before but you think it's going to be better integrated than 1 bolt each side!

Nearly perfect timing for me, I've brought a 3dr Clubsport 40th Ed (on the back of your videos) and was thinking of upgrading to a rear camera from sensors . Really helpful video on where all the clips are for trim removal and how it comes and what to take apart. At least with Mk7's all the trim is cheaply available (obv not the bespoke CSS/CS stuff) should something got busted. The only reason I say its nearly perfect timing is that deutsche-parts have sold out & can see why at that price. Shame the rattle is not solved if it was a squeak I'd say oil the good lady's earing 🤣 PS hope you never got stung by wasps while recovering the CS documents....
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 11 месяцев назад
Ha ha thanks Steve! Only spotted the wasps when watching it back. Yeah I did retrieve it and go to say C&M bins are the cleanest I've ever seen. The only scary bit of trim is that side trim panel, the rest as you say is generic apart from the sill cover but that's hard to damage I guess. Hope you enjoy your new car, if I had to have one car, I think now it would be a Mk7 Clubsport Edition 40. As a do eveything car spec for me would be 5 door DSG buckets panroof DCC, 18s (hard choice but..), carbon steel grey or maybe white. Not exactly lightweight but one hell of a package.

Hi Andrew great video as always can I ask which camera did you buy low or Hi as I understand there is two ? Not sure of difference? Also can I ask how much the camera was from Deusche Parts , looking to do the same on my mk7.5 GTD , just need to find someone to code it. Thanks Matt
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 11 месяцев назад
Thanks so much Matthew! Highline or Lowline is interesting - firstly if you want a genuine retrofit kit from VW it has to be lowline. You don't get the markers on the screen that move with the steering but you do get static markers and when you learn to trust them I honestly can't imagine there is much difference. Resolution is very good and in every other way it seems to operate in the same way. Technically a difference is that it hangs off the existing infotainment control module rather than having its own module that you can read with diagnostics but again academic to end user. You can of course buy a highline emblem with camera as a part but you either need a used loom or an aftermarket loom at which point you are deviating from the approved VW route and with electronics, that's not ideal. Maybe you can buy the loom from VW also as a spare part but there would be no instructions on what goes where. There is also calibration of the markers needed on highline which is not really DIY or able to be done by most garages. Coding really is 0.01% of the whole job so don't worry about that too much until it's in. It was £261.10, they are back order at the moment unfortunately.

@@volkswizard Thanks for this explainer, Andrew. I was curious about the low and high differences and you've explained it perfectly. Now I want to clobber to death whoever specced my Mk7 even more as I've the Discover Pro 8 inch unit. Anyway, I wasn't convinced I could do it after watching Mr-Fix' video but after seeing yours and considering mine is a 5 door, I believe it'll go fine even though I never spliced wires before. I did however recently removed the hatch trim, twice, for drain tube and wiper grommet replacement after it started letting in water and found it trivial.

A very good effort with an excellent result. Top marks for persistence. Certainly not for the faint-hearted. Was that a factory kit as supplied to dealers or a kit of genuine VW parts assembled by a third party? If the former then it's a shame it's not copied by other manufacturers as there must be thousands of owners who would like the upgrade; myself included.

Does the rattle happen more at high RPM? I found on my Golf MK7.5 R it had a super annoying rattle which turned out to be the SoundAktor speaker - essentially the build of the speaker is cheap plastic which is programmed to be too loud from the factory, so when it gets loud it starts to rattle internally. Use OBDEleven / VCDS and lower the volume to 50% - rattle gone
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 11 месяцев назад
I've switched my fake sound off and yes it did rattle, such a bad idea from VW. Sadly that wasn't it. Rattles are very hard to diagnose especially without me describing fully it so here goes; It's a rattle, not a squeak or creek It's at the front of the car It occurs when the front wheels hit an imperfection It is evident independently on left and right side of car, you hear left more often as road edge is bumpier but hit something with right wheel and the noise occurs on the right hand side of the car (so it occurs in 2 different locations, dependent on which wheel hits). It's hard to tell when driving but I'd say it's scuttle/top mount/instrument cluster level. On 'ring trip I heard it once or twice in 1000 miles, minute I get back to my village and I hear it 3 times in 200 yds. If the road imperfection is minor, it will be heard on its own If the road imperfection is medium, it will be heard along with the usual noise caused by suspension compression. I've replaced front top mounts, shocks, arb drop links. I've disconnected ARB, no difference I've removed front bumper and checked crash bar etc, all tight. I've checked subframe bolts, all tight I've removed scuttle cover and checked for loose bolts, tools etc, nothing I've removed both arch liners, nothing in them. Brake pads are original and are tight in calliper Rear brace bar is tight (now) The car looks untouched both in paint and body and not modified when purchased (rattle was there from the off) and doesn't appear to have been messed around with or taken apart.

I suspect a Dieselgate type saga was (and still may) develop about why they are quoting different times for a change between UK and Europe e.g. "Do you own a VW Group and have had a cambelt changed recently.." etc. They may still be laughing when we have to buy engines at 6 years old when it breaks :) Is 15 year check right? It really needs checking before that. Rubber cracks and the bearings can fail so there needs to be visual checks and listen out for noises every year.

Thanks for reply and did think that was a factor. Yes will have mine looked at in service intervals.

Very complicated process. Don't think I could do this myself. Very interesting though as I had so many problems with my dealer when they fitted it on my Mk8.

Sorry to hear that, what problems did you have?

@@volkswizard Long story. They said it would be fitted as per factory but when I went to pick it up all they'd done was place it on the rear bumper! I said that's not right and after threatening to pull out they agreed to have it done the VW way. The company they got to do it refitted it but then didn't know how to code it so had to find another company down in Surrey and eventually 2 weeks later I finally picked the car up.

I get that, TBH I wouldn’t do it again, well not film it as that makes it 2x harder at least

So much work. Not really for a novice. The factory fit works best. In fact there was a four month hold on GTI and R due to the reversing camera not being available on cars for Australia. That meant a breach of our design rules and no cars could be sold. You did well.

Interesting re design rules Philip. I think in some countries rear view cameras are mandatory for safety reasons, is that what happened in Aus?

@volkswizard yes safety gear is mandatory. Reverse cameras can save lives.

Go to whoa (excluding editing) time to do and film, Andrew?

I did it over 3 days in the end as first time to learn job and film is heavy going. I think a few hours next time around.

@@volkswizard I understand the editing can also be very time consuming. 😬 Very interesting. 👍
