That and "WOW". Not too many "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? YES!". That an Al Michaels original. No other sportscasters wanna touch that masterpiece. And in soccer it's "HE SCORES!". That's because they don't score that often in soccer.
@M if you hate baseball so much why are you even bothering to watch? Do you come here just to talk shit? Like most everything else in this world, whether a person likes a sport, or not is completely subjective. It is monumentally immature, not to mention literally impossible to attempt to quantify the merits of one, or the other. Anyone who attempts to do so in order to sway another person's opinion is honestly a complete moron..
@@mattpotter6807 This is NOT Cricket. It's actually a DIFFERENT game and the ball is also DIFFERENT. The players that play baseball and cricket are both humans and they are both athletes with skills. To think that one is somehow superior to another is an IDIOT mentality. lol
How can they not include "The Catch" by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series, which is still considered the greatest catch ever. He caught the ball over his head about 425 ft from home plate after running 115 ft and took only 1.3 seconds from making the catch to making The Throw, back into the infield to prevent the runner on second from scoring. At the time it was the 8th inning with score tied at 2. Not only was it an incredible catch and incredible throw, the context was critical in the game, which is why it's remembered 66 years later. So it's mind boggling how it was not included in this video, IMHO.
In all honesty, both of Jim Edmonds' catches in center running with his back to the plate and diving headlong for the ball were more spectacular. And while I've never seen anything more of Mays' throw than how he releases it, that wasn't exactly textbook. He didn't throw it on a line; he was killing pigeons. But yeah, taken in historical context, it might be the most famous catch ever made.
Or Devon White's play in the '92 WS in aforementioned Mays style which caused a double play and nearly a triple play. How bout Pillar's home run stealing catch on Jackie Robinson Day in 2015 ? I was with my kid to see that one the fans gave him a 5 minute ovation because it reminded them of Devon White catch.
While that was an incredible play, I think this is mostly about the catch itself, like diving catches, ridiculous jumps, Donaldson diving in between stuff, etc. there have been plenty of over the head catches like Jim Edmonds’ but you are correct, none were more important plays than that of Willie Mays, which was less impressive because of the catch itself, more impressive because of the context, run, throw, stadium, stuff like that. But I still think that should’ve been in the video.
As a Giants fan who loves Gregor Blanco's catch in Matt Cain's perfecto as well, I agree. Wise's catch is amongst the greatest ever, if only for the situation it occurred in.
Kierden Freeburn Is it that chill up there? I'm in Texas and the fans down here are unbelievable! They would have said he was showboating or something to take away from a play like this from the apposing team. Anyway, good stuff. Keep it classy Philly! If ya ever need anything let me know cause y'all sound like good people
If you believe that catch was awesome, then you would believe that all catches in cricket are awesome because all fielders, except for the wicket keeper, only catch with their bare hands and cricket balls are much harder than baseballs. Believe me.
I think the ball actually hit the ground as he fell. There is a moment where you can see his hand flat with palm down, palm on ball, ball on the turf. Not a legit catch.
@@xrandy11 ...They make catches better than that every day now. Watch Sports Center top ten.And so what it was made in a World Series. It doesn't make it any better of a catch.
You have seen all catches since 1900 to say puckets was the greatest of all time? Why do you make a fool of yourself by saying something so stupid and wrong?
I have been a baseball fan for more than 70 years; THE iconic catch of ALL-TIME is the one Willie Mays made in the Polo Grounds; no outfielder has EVER gone as far to make a play like that.
If you've ever ran down a shot to center, you know how hard a catch that was for McRae. If you've never done so, trust that it was. Unreal hand eye and lucky his back wasn't jacked up after that one.
This is a display of talent but it’s also a display of trying as absolutely hard as you can. There is something very noble about doing everything in your power for your team.
Didi's catch was unreal. Playing the ball when it is directly overhead is one of the most difficult to gauge; and to make the adjustment lowering his body with enough control. Awesome athletics.
Center field at the old Polo Grounds was 455 ft. Not only did Mays go back about 100 ft to make the catch, he spun around and made a solid throw to the infield to hold the runners.
Not only that, that catch was in game 1 of the Series against the then-Cleveland Indians who had won 111 games in the 154 game season. The Giants went on to sweep the Indians. One has to wonder whether they would’ve been swept had Willie not made that amazing catch and throw.
Ken Griffey senior Yanks red Sox 9th inning Griffey goes over left field wall and Rob's a 3 run Homer score was6_4 Yanks so that ended the game if he missed it red Sox go up 7_4 what a catch
Eric Chavez’s is sick. Sliding catch into your own team’s dugout, to emerge to not only the ump running up and immediately validating your phenomenal play, but the crowd ROARING at your badassery.
This is a great collection. I kept thinking the last one couldn’t be topped, and then it would be. I would say Alomar’s was the best. Catchers have to go backwards and deal with equipment. But immense respect for all of these.
How can you have a greatest baseball catches and not have Ozzie Smith??? He wrote the book on how to play shortstop. He was and will always be the Wizard
One of the best catches I have ever seen was by Hechavarria against the Royals when he vertical for an absolute screaming line drive. From my POV it looked like he went 6 feet straight in the air. I have seen some amazing catches in baseball but that one ranks towards the top of list for me. Lightening fast reflexes and uncanny athletic ability.
Can't help but wonder how it is possible to leave out Bo Jackson; playing for the Royals, climbed the outfield wall and made a run saving catch. It. Was. Insane.
While the catch wasn't all that great, it's the running up the wall the way he did was jaw dropping. But I do believe that Bo made the greatest catch of all time when he turned into superman and launched himself about 20 feet to catch a line drive headed for the gap. I've never seen another player even attempt something like that, but since Bo had a habit of making great plays look routine, that,s the only reason why he is not on this video.
@@Tboy439 I can only remember one player making a similar flying catch, Andruw Jones. He played for the Braves; Tommy Glavin was pitching. The hitter had connected pretty well in a high fly ball over Tommy's head. Where the camera spanned, there was no one there, and the ball was coming in for a landing. From the left, off screen, here comes Jones, airborne, making a gorgeous diving catch. The look on Glavin's face was priceless; eyes as wide as saucers, mouthing the word W-O-W. It's etched in my brain.
I grew up watching Mike Schmidt at third base. One of his best was a foul ball in the stands - Schmitty caught both the ball and a fan's cap! As Richie Ashburn would say, "Hard to believe, Harry."
Mays made a truly remarkable catch with his back to the infield but what made it even more spectacular was his throw back to the infield to keep the runners from tagging up and advancing.
You never see a "best plays ever" without at least one of those on there. I don't know how a catch like that is impossible. You simply cannot see the ball. The Gary Matthews Jr catch should also be on there. The first on this video is borderline routine
Wow this is amazing! I played baseball when I was a kid, and I made a few outstanding plays in the outfield position. I probably could have made the pros if I continued my journey.
I knew a Canadian who was drafted to play pro baseball, football and ice hockey. His first love was baseball and he was offered a minor league contract but turned it down. He claimed that the depth of talent in pro baseball was so incredible that in spite of his talent he was not convinced that he could ever reach the majors. These catches just affirm how deeply that talent reserve runs.
You omitted the greatest catch in history. Ron Swoboda's grab in the '69 World Series for the NYM. The most clutch catch in history. I met him a few years ago in New Orleans where he was doing play by play at the Zephyrs games. I shook his left hand. I wanted to touch the hand that made history. Watch it on RU-vid, you owe it to yourself!
the list has many excellent plays but I dont think there has ever been a better catch than kevin mitchell's bare handed over the shoulder catch in deep left field
Thanks for putting this together . really enjoyed it... A bit of hyperboly in the title though.. Definitely some really good, even some Great great, plays, but All Time Greatest ....... that is questionable...For example you don't have Willie Mays' turn run full speed over the shoulder catch....that is one of Baseball all time greatest catches.. Do suppose there is some subjectivity ( word?) in chosing ....thanks.
