One of my all time favorite quotes from baseball is when Satchel Paige said of Cool Papa Bell he was so fast he could turn off the light and be under the covers before the room got dark. And to prove that point against the Red Sox he scored from first on a sacrifice bunt.
@Tyrannis07
@Tyrannis07 3 месяца назад
That story is true, but you have to add the context of his smart base-running, not just pure speed. Bell was going to 2nd on the bunt and advanced to 3rd because the 3rd baseman had crashed in to field the bunt, then was able to score from 3rd because the catcher ran to cover 3rd and the pitcher didn't cover home. He didn't just blaze home from 1st on a routine bunt.

Gibson had far more AB's but due to poor bookkeeping not all was accounted for. He was also said to hit over 800 homeruns, but the MLB only gave credit for what was recorded officially. He played for 16 years. I think it's safe to say he has FAR more than 2168 AB's. Pretending the NBL was a comparable league doesn't make it true, and it insults the great NBL players by validating segregation. If it was comparable, NBL players wouldn't have been fighting for the chance to play. In the 77 years since integration, only two US-born black pitchers have made it into the Baseball HOF based on their MLB careers. We pretend that these were separate but equal entities. In no way was that true. And the nut of the issue - the record-keeping - was notoriously lacking and sketchy in the Negro League. There's a reason people name the same half dozen or so players whenever they bring up the league. Sadly, it was a sign of things to come that integration killed something that had been pretty successful for its community, just as happened in the 60s when so many black businesses, etc., disappeared for the same reasons.

I'd likely have to go Williams, Ruth or Gehrig because if the power aspect as well as hitting for high career averages. Paige gets all the buzz, but he only started at least 20 games once in his career, and only threw 100 innings in a season six times. Like Gibson and his 2500 career plate appearances, the sample size is just too small, which is ironic considering how long Paige pitched. Then again, if I was averaging 80 innings a year ... 🤣

@@cobbler88 Paige pitched forever it seemed like to me and maybe i bought into the myth and legend mor than what was actually documented. And not taking anything away from Williams but based on what i've read about him Joe Jackson was the most pure hitter. We'll never know what kind of numbers he could have put up if he had been able to have a full career.
@cobbler88

@robertredmon5409 It's not like Jackson only played a handful of seasons. He probably had at least another 5 years in him, but he did play 13 MLB seasons. 2) I have no reason to believe Ruth was lying, but what is a "pure hitter"? It's almost like nailing down "most valuable" but we've been using the phrases forever. 🤣 I throw Williams ahead of him because of "recency" and the combination of being able to hit for average and power while maintaining low K percentages and not being juiced to the gills like more modern guys. Jackson had much better speed. I just like my offense a little more mixed up. You're more at ease throwing to the guy who will only make you pay with a double. As far as FAVORITE players, that's a different conversation. Take care.

This was a stupid move by mlb. They were two different leagues...shouldn't have been...but they were. The negro league is an amazing part of history full of amazing athletes who should be, and are, recognized. To combine the two 80 years later as if that makes up for the sins of the fathers is asinine. It takes away from the negro league legacy. If was black, I'd be furious. But I'm white, so I'm just annoyed and ashamed. A local pittsburgh radio host/writer said it perfectly. Shout out paul zeise. You're not gonna add 20k+ yards and a bunch of tds to warren moons nfl stats because he did so much in the cfl before the nfl was willing to accept a black qb. They didn't play in the mlb, period. I'm of the opinion that they would've dominated, but they didn't because they didn't get the chance. The "baseball" hall of fame should absolutely recognize it, but don't plug numbers into "mlb" stats because you assume it would've translated. It didn't happen. And history was robbed because of it. But that doesn't change it.
@gbmbg114
@gbmbg114 3 месяца назад
I think you’re making a fair point.. except the Moon comparison, because he played in an actual lesser league.. and I think that’s the sentiment/conclusion being made here: the Negro League wasn’t a lesser league, talent-wise.. I don’t think this is the absolute best way of handling the situation.. but I also don’t see it as something to be upset about.. the leagues didn’t have to/get to play against each other.. so I think it goes both ways in terms of “validity” of stats and crowns.. and now that the MLB is the surviving version, they’re doing their part to record history as equally as they can, pulling stats from an unequal time.. I think as long as the names of the teams and leagues are next to player names and stats, people won’t get “confused” as to what they conclude (and there’s allowed to be grey area).. like, if someone, in their heart, wants to hold on to Cobb as the BA leader, I don’t think there’s anything stopping them.. but I think having the best ball players of the day side by side in the annals of history is a worthwhile endeavor.. And if we want to be mad at something, we can direct that towards the people who separated the sport/society.. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them being historically chastised and acknowledging that their messy way of living resulted in a mess.. they cost the Negro League players in the short run and apparently, the MLB players in the long run.. that’s what inequity does - no one “wins” lol.. so stuff like this should encourage us to live in a way and treat each other in a way that the future will respect..

I guess I had assumed (incorrectly obviously) that it had been like alot of the NCAA records where there was the complete "All time" records which are individuals & schools with no seperation based on divisions, leagues etc. with each division also having its particular league specific records as appropriate. Leaves the ability to sort and analyze data on all fronts with no inherent bias from the record book itself (the data is the data). I myself am a fan of the sport first so I am glad to know that the individual player records are appropriately being kept... the MLB has a duty to reflect the records of every player from any top professional league it now represents. The data is the data and can be sorted and filtered for whatever purpose. If we wanna lnow what the top 20 career batting averages are it damn sure better reflect every at bat in a league that is aklowledged as a major league. The American league the National league and the Negro league definitely must be included in compuling all time player stats. Josh Gibson's prime started at age 21 in 1933. Over his 14-year career, he went to the plate 2526 times. In four seasons from 1933 to 1936, Lou Gehrig - who had a 17-year career - stepped up to the plate 2,769 times. Satchel Paige only started as many as 20 games in a single season once (he completed 3 of them), and averaged only 80 innings per season for his 22-year career. He threw 1751.2 IP over his 22 seasons. Bob Feller threw more than 1900 innings in his six full seasons bracketing the 3 years he left baseball to fight in WWII, and he finished at least 20 games every one of those seasons, finishing more than 30 of them twice. To be honest, if we're going to include the stats, we need to start kicking some of the NAL players out of the HOF based on small sample size.

Gibson's sample size of plate appearances is just too small. It's barely equal to 5 MLB seasons. But the times being what they are, you're likely not going to hear in-depth discussion. The fact of the matter is that record keeping was notoriously bad in NAL, and score keeping wasn't exactly standardized. The numbers are likely nowhere close to what they would have been had they had MLB score keepers doing the games. And it's a tough claim either way to say that the average NAL player wasn't good enough for MLB. I would say that the differences between the top and bottom of the rosters in MLB would have narrowed a little with integration, but we greatly exaggerate how much less of a career players like Ruth would have had.
