I am a lifelong resident of Windsor, Ontario which is just across the border from Detroit. I was only 12 years old in 1984 but because my dad was and is such a huge Tiger's fan, I remember the year so well. It was one of the highlights of my childhood years and it was a lot of fun even in here in Canada!
"BLESS YOU BOYS" That was the 1984 Detroit Tigers Fan Motto!!! And boy did they!! What a start what a team. We truly should have been a dynasty but no matter, they won it all and I was 17 so I understood just how special it was. We sat lower bleachers center field for both games 4 and 5!!! We were some of the crazies that ran onto the field and threw pieces of turf up to the upper deck!! Yes we were that wild!!! I think for the city of Detroit which had endured such hard times leading into the economic recovery of the 80's there was just so much steam to blow off and poor Tigers stadium had to endure all that craziness. However we were there 6 months later on opening day and the old girl was as beautiful as ever!!! Thank you 84 Tigers and apologies to the old girl may she rest in piece!!
I watched Morris' no-no from the hospital as I was recuperating from broken ribs, back, and bruised lung from getting thrown out of a rolling car the day before the season opened.
the Gibson home run that helped the Dodgers a few years later might be the more well known one, but this is far and away one of my favorite world series home runs because of Sparky Anderson
Padres have made two WS in their history (as of the end of the 2022 season), and both times they lost to two teams that are in the discussion of greatest teams of all time = 1984 Tigers and 1998 Yankees Padres still the only California team to never win a WS (as of the end of the 2022 season)
1984 national league east champion cubs, built by the Phillies. Warren Brusstar, Dickie Noles, Dick Ruthven, Larry Bowa, Richie Hebner, Ryne Sandberg, BobDernier, Jay Johnstone, Gary Mathews, Keith Moreland. all former Phillies.
keith hernandez should of won national league mvp in 1984 sandbergs numbers inflated playing at wrigley.also i cant believe this was 40 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!
When Garvey hit that HR - it was an explosion heard for miles around the stadium. It was voted SD's #1 all time sports moment. Game 5 Durham was the goat...not the GOAT. Buckner saved him 2 years later. I went to both games in Chicago: The Cubs fans stole hats and pennants from our traveling fans and burned them in the stands; they threw a smoke bomb near Tony Gwynn; they mocked the death of Ray Kroc after game 2. Karma is a bitch. Side note: I was at the airport and saw Reggie Jackson who was working as an analyst for ABC. I went up to him to sign a baseball and he told me to stand around the corner so no not to attract atttention...Yes...Reggie Jackson said he did not want to attract attention. :)
So we could have had very early daygame World Series in 1984 if the Cubs had beaten the Padres Although it wouldnt have surprised me if MLB told the Cubs to play their World Series home games in the WSOX stadium to be able to have nightgames
