From what I've heard and read, Jack was a miserable S.O.B. He wasn't nice to the press at all. This is why Jack is not mentioned with other great pitchers despite being in the HOF. Imho
@pronkb000

Overrated if anything. "Big game pitcher" is one of those terms that seems like a euphemism for "'he's not normally all that good." Also, as an Indians fan, he was more devoted to his ranch than the team and Cleveland had to release him right in the thick of their first pennant race in 40 years. So screw him.

That 1984 Tigers team would make other teams deflated even before they would get comfortable. Before you knew it, you would be down by 3 runs in the first inning

Matthews with Bosley or Cotto in LF. Maybe Richie Hebner if they felt they needed to load up the offense rather than strengthen the defense (and since Detroit didn't have any LH starters).

This series is often considered lopsided in favor of the Tigers. But looking back, that Padres lineup is not too bad. The only really weak spot would be, as a National League team, they didn't have a true DH and had to use a bench player in that role. Funny thing, while Kurt Bevacqua's bat usually resembled a wet noodle, he was awesome during this series. Dick Williams looked like a genius putting him in the lineup.

Two thoughts: 1) 1984 was the year of the moustache; everyone on the Padres bench had the same one. 2) Whose idea was it to have the ceremonial first pitch thrown off the mound? Unrecognized, but appreciated innovation to the baseball pregame.

RIP Jack Murphy Stadium People say the Cubs would have been a better match up , but I disagree. No one was beating the Tigers in 1984. 35 - 5 after 40 games. C'mon now....

That's because the Cubs WOULD HAVE BEEN. I would have loved to have seen Sutcliffe vs Morris and Sandberg vs Trammell that year. The Cubs just let up after going up 2-0 in the NLCS in 84'..
@eldersamuelwilliams9779
@eldersamuelwilliams9779 2 года назад
It's not how you start, but how you finish. Everybody seems to forget how slow the Cubs started in 84, but after that trade with Cleveland and that wild Sandberg game vs.St.Louis, the Cubs just took off that year.Meanwhile, Detroit was a mediorcre team after that 35-5 start before they righted their ship just in time for the ALCS against a sorry Kansas City Royals team.
@OldTown1520
@OldTown1520 Год назад
@@eldersamuelwilliams9779 negative. If they would've been a better match up, they would've proved it by beating the Padres. That 35-5 start in the 1st 40 games to start the season is an MLB record. They were that good. They might've not finished well but you just need to play .500 baseball after a start like they had. Not to mention that year the Tigers had the best record on the road of any team in MLB. They were something like 74-17 when scoring 1st that year. I mean just riculously good. I can keep going too if you'd like. You may have liked to see certain Cubs match up against the Tigers but they wouldn't have been favorable match ups.

How was home field determined back then? I was 12 so I don't remember but I know it wasn't based on record
@pronkb000
@pronkb000 2 месяца назад
It just rotated between divisions, like how the WS would just alternate leagues. Record didn't determine HFA in the pre-WS playoffs until 1998. However, things got juggled in 1986 because the Astrodome wasn't available for one of Houston's scheduled games had they hosted Games 3-5. So Houston got HFA, they moved Boston to having HFA in the ALCS, and things alternated the next year. San Diego also had HFA over the Cubs in 1984 because Wrigley had no lights, so the NL West ended up having HFA in the LCS in 3 straight seasons.

Was not a big fan of the Padres uniforms in 1984, but considering the pinstriped monstrosities they debuted the next year and what they have now, these weren't that bad.
@pronkb000

I like the brown pinstripes. I thought the late-'80s look was the Padres' best look (best of a bad lot, to be fair). I like the current unis, too. In fact, I actually think the Padres have the best City Connect uniforms.

Everybody seems to forget how close this World Series was. San Diego just couldn't close the deal in 3 of the 4 games they lost.San Diego let Detroit off the hook in this one. It was the biased MEDIA who tried put out the narrative that Detroit was somehow this baseball Goliath. Also remember that they had the same personnel in 87' when the Minnesota Twins embarrased them. The media had hyped Detroit up that series too.. That's why if the Cubs had not let up and closed the deal in Game 3 and started celebrating after Game 2 on the flight to California vs. San Diego in 84', they would have defeated the Tigers cause Leon Durham's gaffe in Game 5 vs the Padres would never have happened.

@mrmojorisin8752
@mrmojorisin8752 Год назад
A 4-1 WS “close”? Gimme a break. The Tigers were vastly superior to the Padres. I acknowledge that Detroit did not play as well during the short WS as they did the rest of the year, mainly because Dan Petry had a tired arm. Still, a poorly playing ‘84 Tiger team was still far better than anything the Padres or Cubs could throw out there. PS The MEDIA didn’t provide Detroit with a 35-5 start, and the MEDIA didn’t sweep the Royals, the 1985 World Champions.

Media bias for a Detroit team? That's hilarious. Tigers were a far superior team, playing far below their capabilities and still winning in five.

As NL champs go, the ‘84 Padres stunk. The Tigers played mediocre baseball (relative to the rest of the season) and still won the series 4-1. The media aptly dubbed the ‘84 series “The Foul Classic.”
