The Hall of Famer Mike Mussina is a cousin of mine. When he was pitching for the Orioles the one year, he had managed to stop by one of my little league practices. I was 12 and he was like, this stud pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles. He held me there after practice and had me face that deadly knuckleball of his. He thought it was funny, as my eyes were as big and round as saucers. Now, his fastball was only like 87 mph. He could get it up there to like 95 of he put everything behind it. But typically, these filth ball pitcher like Mussina (Maddux and Glavine were also filth ball pitchers), wouldn't typically throw into the 90s. I swear to God, Mussina was like a freakin' magician. That ball would do the craziest things. And that knuckler would even move all that fast! I think it was only like 78 mph or something ridiculous like that. He'd throw so slow that you think you could hit it, but then it just freaking disappears. But yeah, I did have fun with him that night. He did eventually feed me some "normal" pitches (his changeup that he put no movement on, which is like a Little League fastball). I got to hit a few off of him as he gave me pointers. Today's pitchers come at the batters with nothing but heat it seems like.

I have a buddy who played through college here in Texas at a Big 12 school, and he said one game he faced Kerry Wood. He said none of them could hit him, and that he felt like he accomplished something when he fouled one off lol. I thought it was funny when he said Wood pitching that 20 strikeout game made him feel vindicated.

I hated facing Tim Lincecum. Faced him in college, then short A. His curve ball looked like a fastball heading towards the press box and then it would just drop for a strike

Tim Lincecum was a beast on the mound at his prime. He had a short prime/career but his prime was far better than the average guys. His 4 years of prime (2008-2011) the dude won 2 Cy Young, 3 consecutive year leader in strikeouts, made the all star team 4 times and pitched 2 no hitters. He carried the Giants on his back in 2010 and did what Barry Bonds couldn't do during his time in San Francisco, he won the World Series in 2010 as a starter, 2012 and 2014 as a reliever, still having great numbers late in his career. He's by far my all time favorite pitcher. I find you very lucky for having the chance to play against him in his prime.

I grew up watching the deadly combination of Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz. Braves were practically guaranteed 3 wins in a row, followed by a 50-50 with Wohlers in the 4 hole. Crazy thing is, the Braves pitchers this year is even better than they were in the 90s. I think because they have a lot more talent spread across a lot more pitchers. Other than John Rocker for a few years, the 90s starters didn't really have a whole lot to fall back on. The current defence is a lot better now as well, so the pitchers have a lot of confidence in the guys behind them on the field, and in the bullpen.

I think it was 2001 and I was at A’s Stadium and they were playing the Yankees and the bullpen is attached to the seats basically. Pre game I was 4ft from the catcher when Roger Clemens was warming up to start. What he says above makes sense. When he released the ball, you heard a phissh sound and the ball was in the glove. The catcher was super nice and talked to us after and showed us a protective plate out of his glove and said each ball moved a lot in that split second. I will never forget it so I get what he’s saying just as an observer

Mike Trout also listed Sherzer as his most annoying pitcher to face. He mentioned in an interview he was happy Max went to the Nationals so he won’t really have to face him anymore lol.

Great stories, love your honesty. Did you happen to see that at bat between Vladdy Gurerro jr and Aroldis Chapman (yankee closer who throws 100 plus) ? Unbelievable as Guerrero had never faced him before and came off the bench to pinch hit. Unbelievable at bat and Chapman even texted him later to say great at bat.

Even watching Scherzer on TV, he's scary. I wonder what it'd be like to face Chris Sale. Sale looks angry all the time, then he's throwing 99+ fastball with a sweeping slider. Sale scares me from TV.

DAnny Bard: At the midpoint of the 2004 season, Baseball America named Danny Bard the top freshman pitcher in the U.S. and gave him Freshman All-America honors. For the entire season, Bard was named to Baseball America's All-Freshman second team and was named as Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball. He was Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Year and earned first-team all-conference honors. In 16 games pitched, Bard was 8-4 with a 3.88 ERA; his eight wins tied the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill freshman record. For the 2005 season, Bard was named preseason first-team All-America by Baseball America and was named preseason third-team All-America by Collegiate Baseball and by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Bard went 7-5 with a 4.22 ERA in 16 starts and was third in the ACC in opponents' batting average at .219. He was named to the Roger Clemens AwardWatch List.

As a right-handed batter, I bet it's tougher facing a right-handed pitcher who pitches from the first base side of the rubber. The pitcher can point his feet at the inside corner and get the 2 seamer in a little further. It could be countered with a curveball or slider and it would be more difficult to see the rotation as it actually is coming more at you and then breaking away. Give some insight on this.

some pitchers you just 'see' better for whatever reason. I never played past 15yr old Little League (football was king for me) but 25 years later I can still remember some of the kids I hit better than I should have. one of these days some egg head is going to break this all down using pitch release height , speed, angle and rpm to determine why some hitter 'see' some pitchers better than others and we will not be the better for it.

This took a lot longer to find than I'm willing to admit. April 11, 2007, you were on the Lake Elsinore Storm facing Daniel Bard and his Lancaster JetHawks. He lasted 1.2 innings and got one strikeout and faced 14 batters. Nevertheless with that terrible start only let 5 runs by and Lancaster won 9-6.

Just looked up Jimenez on wiki, sounds like you described his two-seam. "Jiménez's two-seam fastball exhibited strong "tailing" action (moving inside on a right-handed batter and away from a left-handed batter), as well as good "sinking" action, though not always by design. His velocity ranged from 89 to 93 mph, though sometimes reaching 94-96 mph. "

There was this kid in H.S., who would throw low to mid 40 mph. My guesstimate, but it was slow. We faced him a couple times a year. I would be chomping at the bit. I was going to crush this ball for a HR, every at bat. For 4 years, I never did hit a HR off of him! Everybody struggled against him because we were to aggressive and undisciplined at the plate. He pitched soooooo slow!!!

Not quite, but a large percentage of players from the US come from the sunbelt: (CA, AZ, TX, FL, etc). Maybe 53% of players from the US.

I find it hilarious that people are asking you who the pitchers you hated to hit against were. Do they know you only had 57 at bats? Do they know you were only in MLB a month? I'm not disrespectful of you ir or your career, I just don't think asking someone with a sub 200 batting average what pitchers gave them trouble is very informative. Cheers

That many at bats isn’t enough to determine if someone is good or not. Vlad jr is an absolute stud and Matt’s first 57 at bats were far better than vlad jrs. Not saying Matt was going to be better, that’s just perspective on how it doesn’t mean too much. Keep in mind they were also trying to change his swing right as he got into the big leagues, so it means even less now.

do they know that he spent 7 years in the minors and went to one of the best college baseball programs in the country (Daniel Bard went to a rival school)? Do they know he played in the Cape Cod league with the best prospects (that's where he faced Linecum)? But yeah, you're right. He only had a total of 57 at bats in his life.

Prime Timmy made MLB hitters look like little league literally swinging and missing at pitches by a foot Kelly Leak style He still had that stupid movement later in his career but was unable to locate his (now diminished) fastball so hitters just sat on it.
