I am not a baseball player, and you have no idea how much I wish I could, but as a touring musician, I feel everything you talked about in my soul. The travel, the playing through pain, the not telling anyone you are playing through pain, I feel you. Your insight is amazing, much love!

I didn't get travel until I flew from Nashville to Philly with my job every week for four months. Leave Monday at 6am, get home Friday at 8pm, do laundry, do it again. Major props to professional athletes. Absolute grind.

For lots of years, I traveled about 1-2 weeks a month for work, and it was tough. People who do not travel for work always think it must be fun to travel so much. Those of us who have traveled know the truth. It isn't sightseeing and fun. It is a grind. When I was on the road, I did meetings all day, then did my ordinary days work in my hotel room in the evenings. Point being, work travel is a GRIND, and the only sights you get to see are just 99% work places.

This sounds alot like describing being in a touring band to people who haven't done it, its fun 15% of the time the other 85% is grueling exhaustion and constant frustration lol

I think that a lot of people nag on the players who complain about the season being grueling because they can't get over the fact that someone has a job description that includes the words, 'Play' and 'Game'. They can't fathom someone getting paid hundreds of a hundred thousand dollars or even millions of dollars per MONTH to PLAY a GAME. They refuse to acknowledge that it can be taxing on the players both physically and mentally (mentally, especially in baseball). In my opinion (and I don't even think it is up for debate) professional hockey players have the toughest season. 82 game season..playoffs can be at long as 28 games..plus preseason. Crazy hits by guys travelling like 50kmph...and you land on Ice...not grass. They play every second day for the most part. It isn't like football where they play what, 16 games in 17 weeks..? The football 'experience' is greatly exaggerated, in my opinion (especially with the newer rules and the drastic changes to their practices). If they want to earn the reputation as being the most physical sport, they should be playing more than once a week. Until then, hockey takes the cake, at least in my opinion. ( I didn't mention rugby..as I figure most people here are north american..and any rugby here in very, very low level. One of my best friends who is extremely un athletic..but is 6'5 and weighs 250 pound walked onto a Canadian university varsity rugby team and started... that tells you the level of the play here). hahah

Your videos are more interesting to listen to than any other ball player I’ve seen. This is life for most ball players. This is some real shit. The fact that you made it to pro ball, that you got paid to play baseball is so awesome in and of itself. Your college that you coach at is fortunate and those players hit the jackpot being around a guy that’s done it all.

Hi Matt; Love your videos; especially the way you are so humble and humorous in telling your war stories! You discuss the issues that people have always been curious about -- but which no one else ever explains. Oh, my son was drafted by the Orioles in 2015 (25th round), and experienced many of the issues you have discussed, including the nonsensical "phantom DL". I knew the minor league grind was very difficult, but your video really brings home how hard it can be. Your story about falling down while warming up pitchers at the end of your career was hilarious! Keep the videos coming. I'm going to tell my son about you; I know he can relate.

Another great presentation! :) I think the logistical aspect of baseball is quite interesting. Logistics, I am using this term to cover: How seasons are scheduled, compensations, travel and lodging, clubhouse, food, medicine. Without a good understanding of baseball's logistics, it would be rather difficult to understand why players are what they are. Not to mention, with logistics included in the picture, we can better understand baseball's tough career treadmill the players must survive.

I was a big fan of the Hawaii Islanders in the old PCL. For a time there, we were the farm club for the Pittsburgh Pirates. I remember the last games of a series having to end at about 9:00 pm so the team (or teams) could make the 10:30 red eye out of Honolulu. It was pretty sad for guys getting called up...it about 2 days, so some guys came right back, as they got there only to find that the guy they were to replace had already recovered and was ready to get back on the field.

Hi Matt. I lived with a bunch of college baseball players (I played soccer and football... Never could hit) and you are a weird group. Haha. My question, lots of guys throw 90+, even in Junior college. I knew guys at LCState and CBCC(here in Washington State) that threw 92 but never got drafted. What sperates those guys? And hitters for that matter. Awesome videos man.

This sounds like a whole summer of lifeguarding, except for the getting beat up part of it. 6 to 7 hours a day sitting up on a stand, in the sun, and having to be constantly alert and scanning your water. Three days off in the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day and these were rainouts when we either didn't open, once, or when it was so bad that we opened but no one was dumb enough to pay for swimming in the first hour and a half so we closed up and went home, twice. And then, in the sun worse than being out in the field playing ball because of having less clothing on.

Was there ever a time you were questioning whether or not you'd truly want a career out of it? Or did you ever see guys in the minors just stop pursuing that chance to make it to the majors because they were burned out? I came no where close to this level, and i ended up getting completely burned out. It went from being my passion and a sport i loved playing to a chore and a hassle.

I can imagine how,exhausting the schedule is. I think there are WAY too many games. The travel alone is awful! The strain in your family, and thus on you, has to be unreal. I would love to see the season start later, have no more than four games in one week, and the season end sooner. Football is once a week and look how banged up those guys get! And what happens when you're sick? It's inhumane, Matt. And the multitide of games is to make more $$$$ for the owners, managers, etc. They can live on a lot less! Just my thoughts. I am an old lady (72), but at no point in my life could I do even a miniscule portion of what you guys do. Thank you for your videos!

If you played the PCL the Rebbirds are in that, that’s our “home” park. We bout 50-60miles from Memphis so we take in 10-12 games a year. What years did you play in Memphis? What Cardinal players you remember playing against? I got to see Albert a few times, Lance Lynn was at Ole Miss so we saw him in college and at Memphis. Love Auto Zone Park, but foul balls or toss ups are hard to impossible! The staff or ushers are way too stricked for baseball! Damn.. it’s a baseball not a bank vault. I wish these games that kids play, like Madden or MLB The Show, would include in those Player's Career things ... the stuff you're talkin' about. Not necessarily the whole bus ride, but a simulation where you're fighting sleep, making mistakes on the field because you're tired, and if you choose to sleep on down time, you're missing out on bonuses like making better friends with teammates, stuff like that.

After working on the grounds crew for a minor league team for only one season it really opened my eyes. I live near a minor league team and have gone to a ton of games over the past 17 years of living here. I always thought minor league players had a good deal. Show up at 5 for BP play the game at 7 usually and go home to their fancy apartments and have a good nights sleep. I could not have been more wrong. I remember one game where there was a long rain delay and they did not finish the game until about 1 AM! Then the grounds crew had to be in at 10 AM the next day to get the field prepped for team practice. The season is so long and I did not even have to play the games. I just had to get the field ready. Definitely a whole new respect for minor league players.

marathon baseball. baseball was America's only national sport for awhile. Now you have 3. Seems that they could do spring training in March-April, with the regular season from May 1 to Aug 31, then start the playoffs in Sept, finishing by Sept 31. That's 120 games during the regular season. some would scream, but trying to play baseball in cold weather is miserable. imagine Wrigley at 40f with wind.

I guess they don't want to find out this year eh?? C.S's I have NO doubt it is VERY DIFFICULT. I remember going to baseball camp as a 13 year old kid, and even playing there every day for 14 days with NO travel involved , and eating good, home-cooked meals was grueling. Constantly wearing spikes hurts your feet, standing out in the sun all that time gave a PAINFUL sunburn behind the ears where the cap did NOT protect you. Your hands BLISTERED up from swinging the bat. If you got hit by a pitch, it would ALWAYS leave a painful bruise that does not feel good, and hurts worse as you keep playing. Sliding into bases gives you 'strawberries' that hurt when you run, or squat in your fielding ready-position. YES you are ALWAYS tired or in at least some pain.

Do MLB players get fed Dean and Deluca in the clubhouses and airport?

OMG, what if you are a reliever pitching an inning or so at the end of an occasional game? What the heck do you do sitting there in the bullpen with a bunch of rowdies with no cell phone??

Why do they have signs of no betting, do they talk about betting baseball ?

it's because one of the world series was fixed about 100 years ago. Gambling on baseball as a player has been absolutely taboo since

the other thing no one thinks about -- everyday you go to the "office" you have to be "on" and a lot of people are watching... that would kill me if I had to be at my best every single day

mlb season not from a business perspective but from a sport perspective is unnecessarily long, think thats why people keep getting caught for peds. specially since only so few teams make the playoffs

why did you decide to go off to college and play instead of going out of high school after getting drafted?
@AntonelliBaseball

I have a few videos on it. Basically I thought the scholarship and potential to get drafted much higher 3 years later outweighed going out of high school. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Three words: repetitive stress injury. Golfers know it well, and baseball has far more contact that that. Even crappy golfers keep Motrin and Aleve in their bag.

I know it is not the same, but when I was a pizza store manager I worked everyday, except Thanksgiving and Christmas, everyday for 3 years. So, for some of us, we understand.

A few less. Depends on the level, but usually anywhere from 130-150.

The minors sound like hell. Low pay. Hard travelling. Bad food.

I can't imagine fouling a ball off your foot..it has to hurt like hell..then you hit a grounder..run on a throbbing foot..then the next day it's swollen and stiff..then you have to run around in pain the next day..foul another pitch and it hits the same spot.. How does everyone seem to have such a higher pain threshold than us normal people? Do you ever get used to intense pain? Can't imagine getting beaned by a 95 mph heater either.
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 5 лет назад
Yes definitely hurts to get hit off your foot. I think as a player you are used to playing in some type of pain, so you get used to it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
