I would lay off the betting if I were him. Close to 400 bets and he only got paid from 16 of them. 0 for 25 on Pirates bets. He should at least stop doing parlays.
The random things Jimmy finds out about him self is hilarious. "I been counting Mississippi slow my whole life, that just ruined back yard football for me" 🤣💀
It’s also funny because it’s only 2.5/3 seconds, not 5. The timeline shows the red at 2:18.30 and the white at 2:21.00. I can’t see where he got five from but maybe that’s from the red marker to the end of the video file to account for the 2 additional seconds he read off.
Pretty sure Ranger fielded one last year where he flipped the ball to himself like a juggler before throwing to first. Another great and unexpected piece to an all time Phillies roster
He did that in the World Series to Bregman. It was cold, too, because you could tell Bregman didn't want to run but Ranger forced him to run all the way to the bag.
I mean, if they were parlays and only one part of the parlay has to fail to lose, that doesn't actually mean that he was wrong 25 times on the pirates. This is way more sad than anything. I hope this guy gets treatment.
@@TheHandHistoryVault Well he literally lost a lot of bets... like 95.7% of them. If that's not losing, what is? And then getting banned for life. Also a major loss.
I worked in the front office for a MLB team, and yes EVERYONE who works for the team (including grounds crew) is prohibited from placing bets. The only thing we were allowed to do was play fantasy baseball.
I love how professional sports have just welcomed these gambling companies. I feel like in 50 years our grandchildren will be like wtf was wrong with you
Why? It comes down to self-control. The betting sponsorships are to advertise to fans, not players. If a player cannot handle getting paid a ton and not betting, they are a moron and deserve to be tossed from the league.
They are unrelated though. It doesn’t matter what they promote. If I work at at a place and they offer me generational wealth for my entire bloodline, but the only thing I have to do is not gamble, it doesn’t matter if the company promotes gambling to its consumers. When I signed my name on that dotted line and accepted that money, that’s what I agreed to.
@GoingMach5 Exactly. They also promote fast food, but if an MLB player lets himself go on Taco Bell, I doubt the response would be to outlaw fast food ads. I genuinely just think too many people are stupid
Idk this comment might get deleted, but this channel is one of the biggest culprits. Their playoffs watch-alongs should have just been renamed “watch us gamble for 5 hours at a time”
@@jackiemoon5906 It isn't supposed to be an own, just to show these kind of bans/problems are gonna keep happening when betting sponsors are so present in and around MLB
@@jackiemoon5906 you dont see moral dilemma tho? everyone is making money off the gambling except the players, when the gambling can only exist because the players.
Jimmy's Three Things has quickly become one of my favorite things Jomboy Media puts out. It's such a fun, informative segment that makes me love baseball even more than I already do. Great work!
I'm glad I root for a clean and respectable organization like the Houston Astros. You won't see an Astros player get involved in illegal activities like gambling like Yankees, Dodgers and Padres players do.
@@doesanyonehavegum327 This one time I heard a guy say that Astros fans are masters of baiting. Guy called 'em a bunch of bait masters. It was pretty rude, I don't appreciate that kind of language.
No one faces that kind of prison time if they can avoid it. And if you think that statement sounds unreasonably confident, then look at your own. Your opinion contradicts the FBI’s, and yet you seem convinced that you’re right and they’re wrong - why? Do you think the FBI cares about the MLB making money? They don’t.
Grounds crew members are indeed team employees and not league employees, but that would be interesting if a grounds crew member got suspended for altering the field for a parlay.
If you look at the NL Cy Young predictor currently, it's Ranger Suarez, and then everyone else. He fields so well I wouldn't be shocked if he got a gold glove too.
MLB did this to themselves by tying the sportsbooks' millstones around their necks. Glad they're getting their comeuppance but I wish legalized sports betting wasn't wreaking such havoc on all of society.
I remember the talkin yanks ep I think during the post 2021 off-season where you were going through trying to find the Yankees a 3B and fell in love with Tucupito Marcano for like 3 minutes
it would be crazy if there was a major sports betting website that frequently pays huge sums of money to be shown alongside what is a large portion of the sports audience
Breaking news from ESPN's Alden González: Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani’s former and longtime interpreter, pleaded guilty to bank and tax fraud charges during a change-of-plea hearing in federal court this morning. Total maximum sentence: 33 years. Sentencing is set for Oct. 25 at 2 pm PT.
The way federal sentencing guidelines work, it is almost a certainty that Mizuhara will NOT face the maximum sentence. He pleaded not guilty at first because he was still negotiating with prosecutors.
@@michellesakura1 Not a lawyer, but I know that sometimes the year total can be a lot higher than the actual time served. Like if you're guilty on 5 counts of "x crime", you might get sentenced for 1 year for each "x crime" (5 years total), but you serve all the sentences at the same time meaning you only are actually in prison for 1 year. I have no idea if that's the case for Ippei though.
@@michellesakura1 it's a blue collar crime. he won't serve 33 years. especially being a non-white male. they'll probably give him a week or two in jail then community service ... not even joking.
10:58 The rule you're reading here says that a player can't bet on a game he's involved in at all, not that they're only forbidden from betting against their own team.
19:02 I don't doubt Suarez loves making good plays, but he's probably smiling here because he just got a complete game shutout. That was the last out Great stuff as always, Jimmy
Professional sports is owed zero trust or credibility. Exhibit A) The 2017 World Series and the Houston Astros players that not only faced ZERO consequences but earned multi-million dollar contracts post cheating.
The reason betting on your own team is really bad, EVEN IF YOU ONLY BET THEM TO WIN, is that you're giving the bookie info about when your team is likely to lose because of the games you *don't* bet on.
If he were a superstar worth hundreds of millions he wouldnt have to answer any questions and he wouldnt even get a slap on the wrist, could just blame on someone else and its over
Considering that an MLB player with inside information repeatedly lost *THAT* badly, I'd say that shows maybe none of us should gamble on sports! 😬 (Sorry not sorry, Draft Kings!)
I am surprised at how outraged people seem to be by betting. Fast food, alcohol, pot, and so on all seem perfectly fine to most people, but betting is just a step too far 😂. People are wildly selective and inconsistent
@@zaneplatt3533 It's not so much people being outraged by gambling in general, it's the hypocrisy of so many companies (including pro sports leagues, teams, and media) relentlessly promoting now-legal gambling because it's profitable to them, while it's harmful to a majority of those that partake.
@@zaneplatt3533 I don't think they were saying that gambling is immoral. They were implying that it's a waste of money, which for draft kings, casinos, etc. to stay in business, the gambler does need to lose most of the time. edit: you could argue that wasting money is immoral, and I would definitely say that gambling is not the MOST ethical use of money. But does anyone always spend money in the most ethical/moral way?
@@samuelwyatt7846 I actually replied with a clarification, but for some reason RU-vid is filtering it out unless you click to view All comments instead of just the "Top" comments the system likes 🤷
Every baseball game now advertises some rando betting site... Its annoying as fuck.... Then these same guys say how dare you bet on baseball!!!!! ... Idk just feel bad for the players more than anything. Betting on your own team seems like it would give you more incentive than anything
MLB does say you can’t bet on diamond sports while working for MLB. The ban is because Marcano bet on his own team and could have been directly involved in the outcome of those games. The suspension is because the players bet on other teams in which they were not directly involved in the outcome of the game (“have no duty to perform”)
3:27 In Australia, gambling companies offer ‘Same Game Multis/Parlays’ and that’s marketed HEAVILY !!! Not sure if that’s offered on MLB games down here.
6:40 Break that problem down and round the numbers. 4% of 100 is 4. Multiply that by 4 because the original number is almost 400. So yes you are correct. you got this Jimmy
Your Mississippis were fine, Jim. When you stretched it, the timer was in increments of a half second. The total time was closer to 2.5 seconds. And you were never sacking QBs as a kid, man, cmon!
I know someone who has a husband and a son who work for the Guardians. Both are behind-the-scenes employees who deal with minor league players, not folks on the MLB roster. I asked her if she was allowed to place sports bets. She, and all her children, are banned from bets on baseball. If any of them do, the employees-in-question would be immediately terminated.
Pete Rose, the all time hits leader, got banned for life for betting on baseball. He also bet on his own team, but his ban came as a result of having bet on baseball - period. Those other four players had better receive lifetime bans too, or the MLB is going to hear a crap ton from fans in Cincinnati
I think he might have been betting parlays, meaning just having the Pirates win the game wasn't enough to win the bet. He needed the Pirates to win AND some other team(s) to win also.
The Black Sox scandal almost ended baseball. There’s a reason they are so harsh on the participants. And btw that’s only if you bet on your own team. Otherwise a mild suspension
You're naive. -> MLB sponsored by Draftkings. Also, it's okay for players to be on PEDs and teams like Red Sox, Astros, Yankees etc to cheat. Yet that's only a slap on the wrist.
I could see a scenario in which somebody wanted a bunch of bets placed that would lose, so that they would win when they bet the other way. A good way to get people to bet the way you want them to is to have somebody who those people think is in the know place a bet that will lose.
Topic idea - is Strike Zone graphic standard across the league? I saw a post on Instagram talking about a close pitch in a Mets-Brewers game. The one broadcasts showed it clearly a ball, the other clearly a strike, and I think the MLB app or Baseball Savant showed it as right on the line. We keep talking about grading umpires but by which strike zone?
In a series of 4 games if each team has a 50% chance of winning, you will guess the winner of all 4 games about 6% of the time. 5 games would be 3%. It's likely he was betting parlays of at least 4 games, but it seems likely many were probably more than 4 games.
It says he lost parlay bets on the pirates. We dont know how many teams he had on any parlay. He could be playing 10 team parlays for long odds, which would explain the poor record
I have an idea for Jimmy’s 3 things. I noticed this season not only is Jesse Winker is having a bounce back season but he has stolen 11 bases this year when he never stole more than 1 before. Maybe look into why do you think he’s stealing more now?
Not sure what mlbs rule on it is- but as an employee for a few sports teams just not any mlb- I can’t bet on the sport I work for at any level or sports book. So would assume grounds crew would be in same boat. There are also some rules regarding certain sports books. I can bet on sports other than those I work for as long as my team does not have any promotional contracts with that sports book. For example: I can’t bet on fanatics due to the relationship between fanatics and one of the teams I work for
Also, our ice crew is employed by the arena- not the team, but at one point they were employed by the team so it likely varies team to team if grounds crew is team staff or event staff. Regardless they are bound by the same rules
Everyone shoud jave expected a case like this with the pushing of getting on games. There are just going to be more and more cases with the 3 major sports
Seems like not a coincidence the day this lifetime ban and other suspensions handed down, Shohei Ohtani's interpreter pleads guilty and MLB says the case is closed. Not sure if there is a connection, but just feels a little shady.
This guy has been on the injured list all season and I am wondering if the Padres can recoup any money that they may have paid him prior to this. Anyone know?
Major Sports encourage gambling in every possible venue and then pretend to have a moral compass when their net sucks in a few of the players, ref's, & management. The sports leagues need to take some lessons from politicians - they get away with our tax dollars like that all time.
I was thinking earlier: What happens when a spouse admits it? Like if Mrs. Freddie Freeman gets caught betting on Dodgers games, but swears up and down that it was only her mistake and Freeman himself had no idea. How is that handled? Cause I feel like youd HAVE to punish the player anyway right? It would just be impossible to prove they didn't know? Like with Ohtanis translator, thats just a friend/colleague, and thats different. You can definitely not know what friends or coworkers are really doing, but relatives.... Btw I only picked Freeman as an example, hes very well liked and has had auch a long career without any hint of scandal. Whereas like Machado or Donaldson, it wouldn't be *totally* shocking you know?
@TalkinBaseball going off how long it took the video to play on RU-vid it was less than 5 seconds. The computer lied to you Jimmy. You're Mississippi counting was correct the first time
Make it public, make it a part of their compensation, make it so every game must be gambled on, make it so you shall bet on your team. Imagine seeing Aaron Judge bets $5 on an A’s game.
Did we get the correct bets right? it wasnt 387 total bets, it was the 231 mlb bets. He won 10 bets. 10 bets out of 231. Which is actually really good if your bets payout 50X or more. There are more risky bets than win/lose the game. What are the odds Juan Soto hits a triple today?
