Darryl strawberry had cancer as well in 98’. When I was 13 I went and saw him do his comeback through the minors for the Columbus Clippers as they were playing my mud hens in Toledo. He was the nicest guy ever, he stayed and signed every autograph from at least 50 people that stayed afterward to see him. I still have that signed Baseball to this day 20 years later lol. It was cool because my favorite team is the Yankees and I got to see him win the World Series with them a few months later. Just awesome memories!

Brien Taylor big Yankees pitching prospect in the early 90's dude was a psychopath and because of this he never became successful
@fje6902
@fje6902 5 лет назад
Brien Taylor never became successful because he was injured in a bar fight protecting his little brother. That was right after he and his mom (agent) bilked the Yankees for over one and a half million to sign with them. If Taylor did not get the money, he threatened he would skip baseball and attend a junior college. This led to a rule change which prohibits this type of "extortion".

Dave Parker has the credentials as it is. The writers and voters just remember how he often wasn't liked. He lost a couple of seasons because of his addiction issues, but the career nevertheless is there. I don't seen what the issue is.
@alfjgist
@alfjgist 5 лет назад
Anonymike : The ironic thing about Parker is that he had 2 really good years with the Pirates in 78 and 79, winning an MVP and a World Series, while using cocaine and amphetamines. Keith Hernandez did the same, but his numbers were not nearly as good.
@anonymike8280
@anonymike8280 5 лет назад
@@alfjgist Parker is absolutely a Hall of Fame player. Unless he was using actual PED's, and there is no evidence of that in the arc of his career that I can see, he tops my list. It's not the Hall of Exemplary Male Celibates. If we kicked out athletes who cheated on their wives or took something, there'd be no one there. In the 1950's and 1960's almost everybody did greenies. Amphetamine may not have directly enhanced performance, but it kept players alert and helped players in their 30's avoid creeping weight gain. In the NFL back in the era, many players did speed. Some delibarately drank themselves under the table the night before the game because they believed having a massive hangover helped them generate the rage they needed to play. A lot of them may have thought that being on speed or being hung dulled their sensitivity to pain also. Later, they used cocaine for the same reasons. Some athletes have opened up about drug use. Jose Canseco is one who admitted it. He has said that without PED's he would never have made the major leagues at all.
@alfjgist
@alfjgist 5 лет назад
@Anonymike no argument there. I was just pointing out that Parker played just as good and drugs didn’t ruin his career, rather it was the drug trials in Pittsburgh in 85 that ruined him. Those trials took down public opinion of the players involved. Parker and Hernandez being the 2 biggest names out there at the time. Parker deserves to be in the Hall based on his numbers as compared to other outfielders in his era. He was a great player, but his real problem on the field was the bad teams he was with in Pittsburgh after 1980
@jonathoncurtis9861
@jonathoncurtis9861 5 лет назад
I've heard several times that if Mantle hadn't gotten hurt early in his career and began drinking like he did he would've put up numbers nobody could touch. Eric Davis is another, I always heard he enjoyed cocaine now and again. If thats true and he could've stayed healthy, his numbers were just flat out scary.

Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, and Clemens will be under a cloud for a long time. Palmeiro has the most impressive stats for someone who will be denied the Hall of Fame except perhaps for Pete Rose, but there are arguments that he could have never done Hall of Fame performance without the illicit chemicals.

Denny McClain has to be on there. Here’s a guy smack dab in the middle of the greatest pitching era of all time by far. In 1968 he has a 31 win season, in 1969 he has a 24 win season. He beats Bob Gibson and an incredible Cardinals team in the 1968 World Series. Yet in 1970 he goes 3-5, 1971 goes 10-22 ?Then eventually fades from the game. It doesn’t get more tragically graphic than that.
