Bob Costas hosted this episode of MLB Remembers which aired in 2009. This was the story of the infamous brawl in August 1965 kicked off by Giants' pitcher Juan Marichal assaulting with a bat Dodgers' catcher John Roseboro.
I was born in 1956 in Mountain View California this is the first baseball game my father brought me to, I happen to get up to go to the concession stand and when I came back the fight had just started and I thought to myself I had no idea baseball was this way- seems more interesting than ice hockey!
I saw it live on KTTV (Channel 11), the local station in Los Angeles. It was a miracle Koufax wasn't hurt. He was right in the middle of the brawl initially. Mays was a hero by pulling Roseboro away and tending to him. (The Giants eventually won the game. Mays hit a home run off Koufax.) Koufax & Marichal - pitching doesn't get better than that. And this is, finally, a great story.
Marichal got suspended for a week, which really hurt the Giants chances of winning the NL pennant. It pissed me off, because Dirty Drysdale always threw at Mays and he never got suspended. And Roseboro's throws back to Marichal when he was at the plate almost beaned him in the ear. He knew he could bait Marichal, the cheating Dodger.
We had season tickets and were in attendance that day. I was really excited to see Koufax vs. Marichal (my fave player). Unfortunately, he was tossed in the 3rd inning. I’ll never forget!
I remember this game. At that time, the only Dodgers games televised were the Giants games from Candlestick. I watched, and I was a severely angered nine-year old. Marichal became Public Enemy Number One. Admittedly, I felt awkward when he became a Dodger, and I figured “Well, I guess we root for him now.”’ That 1965 season turned out all right, capped by a 2-0 Koufax shutout and Lou Johnson home run in Game 7 versus the Twins.
I was there too as a nine year old kid. Watched that game on KTTV channel 11 on a Sunday afternoon. And if you're a collector of rare sports events like me I have that 7th game on DVD along with all the other six 1965 WS games. Vinny interviewing Sandy in the locker room afterwards is included. What a thrill watching the Dodgers again and again playing baseball in 1965 live but in black and white. It was broadcast in color on NBC but what survived is the Canadian version on kinescope.
I was 13 and had the same experience. Those weekend series in Candlestick were a treat to watch. Getting to see Sandy and Drysdale pitch, and Mays and McCovy play was a special opportunity to watch great players.
If Marichal did this in today's baseball, he would have been suspended for at least one year, and MLB would fight the Players Association in court, I know back then there was no Players Association back then, but Marichal would have been ruined in today's baseball.
We still have bench-clearing to-dos to this day. Occasionally, one guy will take on everyone else from the other team: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iU-ESpiwV4o.html
i remember an incident back in 1972 larin legrow threw a pitch that plunked bert campy campanaris in the ankle and campy tossed his back at legrow. he ended up being suspended for the entire world series.
Incorrect. He was suspended for the remainder of the ALCS but permitted to play in the World Series. Received an additional suspension at the start of the next season.
Since they made the Astros become an American League team, it's becoming a pretty good rivalry between them and the Rangers. Houston and Dallas compete a lot like Los Angeles and San Francisco.
I say have both Giants and Dodgers come and play in NYC as the New York Giants, and the Brooklyn Dodgers in an exhibition game to re-live that rivalry. It will be game time!!!
After this , The Say-Hey Kid said "I had said Sandy at a advantage , had to throw his fastball , even with his great control can't chance the curve . Thats what Willie said in one of his bio"s .
Yes, I recall the incident vividly to this very day, and the old bastard is still living at the age of 86. 🤔 😲😳😬 🤣😂🤣 However there’s no denying Juan Marichal was a great pitcher who is worthy of being in the MLB Hall of Fame. Let’s go DODGERS 2024 !!! ⚾️⚾️⚾️ ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER (from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex)
it's funny that Ty Cobb was doing this sort of thing every day with his spikes flying into the arms and legs of the opposing players and nothing ever happened to him
I WAS THERE AT AT THE "BRAWL" GAME... I HATED🤬 JUAN EVER SINCE... THE ONLY THING I COULD DO WAS TO GET A JUAN MARICHAL CARD AND USE IT FOR "DART" PRACTICE‼️👍🏻
This must of sent race relations back a few notches....if it happened today ...how would social media fuel this? Still ,this is American history and also baseball history.LA..vs. SF . Intense rivalry for sure and sonething today's game needs.
How social media would fuel this -- we're getting kind of an insight from the comments to this video already from something which happened almost 60 years ago. The answer? It would not go well for Marichal at all.
