If you watch the last one with McCarthy, he was probably the closest, in my opinion from what i could see, to being knocked out. If you watch the slow motion replay and keep a close eye on his throwing hand, as soon as he's hit and starts going down you can see it curl up! Very similar to some of the knockouts you might see in MMA or something of that nature.....or if you watch NFL and saw the second concussion that Tua got in the 2022 season and the way his hands took a very distinct posture that you could tell was completely uncontrollable! And then after his head bounced off the ground and he started to sit up, his hand is just kind of "there" against the side of his face, which wasnt where the ball hit him. You can tell he isn't with it at all in that moment!

Well there's the addition of pitches have a certain range of control. Like one getting away from you vs intentional hitting....there's a bit of a faded line. You'd need to be so unbelievably talented to be able to hit a 98mph fast ball with a bat with enough control to snipe the pitcher's head. That's 10000% a freak accident. Like the entire 178 degrees of where you could hit on the surface of both the ball and the bat and then the some -12 degrees to 89 degrees range vertically and about 130 degrees horizontally from the plate, they hit the perfect spot to send that fastball right back at the pitcher's face. It's beyond terrifying, it's something that statistically shouldn't be happening in like centuries between incidents.

At those speeds they're like a massive bullet. It's a miracle that none of these hits resulted in fatalities. I have always believed that Pitchers should have to wear protective gear just like the Catchers do. When that ball comes off of that bat, the Pitcher is both the closest to that projectile, and the one in the most immediate line of fire. I don't care if some people think it's "inconvenient" or "unnecessary". It'd rather have Pitchers wear protective gear and never end up needing it, than to have them go without and get nailed by a comebacker like these....or in a worst-case scenario, ending up six feet under. The lives and well-being of these players should be more important than anything else.

Yeah, the full video is even scarier. He stood there for a couple seconds with his hands on his knees, semi-supported by the catcher, then he staggered one step sideways and went down to his knees. He was completely on instinct there for about 20 seconds, lights were on but nobody was home.

Won’t be surprised if we start seeing head and face protective gear on pitchers in the near future. Batters and catchers are expecting the ball to come at them and are much more readily able to dodge out of the way than a pitcher who’s just thrown the ball, and they wear helmets. The ball can also come at a pitcher significantly faster than a pitch headed towards the batter.

yea fr if it was me i’d prolly just run to the dugout cuz i wouldn’t be able to say i got a base when i hit the pitcher in the face but that’s just me

@@gurk_the_magnificent9008 that will probably at some point be a possibility, the other thing pitchers have to defend themselves from a line drive minus their glove is. Most have kinda like plates on the sides of their hats that are built into it but it doesn't help much, in little league and high school I was beaned back at the mound twice. Once hit my throwing shoulder and the other the side of my head, the second one I was never the same and couldn't really get on the mound anymore after...

You could not enforce an immediate stoppage rule even if you put it in place because it violates both human pyschology and common sense. It's literally three or four seconds that they continue playing and most of the time it's because they haven't registered what happened. Even when you see a thing like that you're naturally on autopilot a few seconds. The players also aren't the ones who give attention to the injured person beyond verbal "Are you ok". It's the trainers. If anything, a lot of players around distracts and hinders the trainers from getting to the injured player. The trainers start moving from the dugout as soon as it's clear they're needed. There's no reason to penalize the players for acting on instinct for four seconds when there's nothing useful they could do anyway to help the injured man.

​@@gurk_the_magnificent9008 it's actually why you're taught from a young age to be ready to field the ball. I know in girls soft all at the HS level the pitchers wear masks/helmets but the ball is bigger there's an issue with vision if they out a mask on and a helmet will fall in the windup.

The weight of a helmet would mess up the pitcher's mechanics, you would see a spike in shouoder and elbow blowouts. Pitchers hate any changes, their body has to be sligned perfectly every throw. Might also see a sharp rise in hit batters. To implement this you would need to start it at Little League and make pitchers use them from the beginning of their involvement. Not hard to DC o, but it would take decades. The frequency of comebackers like this us pretty low, so someone mwybe figured it up and decided a sore head and pisdible concussion vs 4 or 5 elbows wasn't a trade. Hitters also promise to be resistant, not because they want to hit the pitcher, but because by dint of what they are made of, hard helmets shine, and that will draw the hitter's eye. Its the way human eyes are made, they track movement and reflection. It could be overcome, sure, but its not just poking out another new rule. It would be very hard to implement and baseball doesn't have the smartest governing body in pro sports.

I say the say same thing but with hockey. Like I think in the NHL they should wear the full caged helmets. The visors only help so much and pucks can still get underneath. I think alot of players would agree they would rather sacrifice a bit of vision if it meant saving their career or possibly their life

It's the exact opposite, while cages are a thing that they can use having pucks hit them in the face is so incredibly rare that most want the performance over safety Which given what level they're on I can understand. Though with baseball it seems much more common, but I also only see complications so who knows

yea its very common nowadays that youre taught to bring the back leg down into a fielding position like an infielder so that this is much less common

Players Union CBA makes it optional for them I am pretty sure...they probably have to do that cuz no one wants to play this very skillful, yet fuckin boring ass game....

I would say on average the ball travels at an exit velocity of 100mph once hit off of the bat, so it is just a matter of the angle and trajectory of the ball at that point determining if it hits the Pitcher or not. Think of a car accident at the speed but rather than the impact spread across your entire body it is focused and all confined down to a small area increasing the kinetic energy into a fine point making it much easier to penetrate through, or to shatter the bones very violently in a small area....so do you want the impact of a 100mph car crash focused all its power as its smashing into your eye socket would you think that is: 1) No big deal, walk it off! or 2) Very very bad!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of pitchers wear a protective plate inside their caps above the ears to help protect now. A bulky helmet would mess up their mechanics.

Not only that, a helmet would save them from a lot of external injuries yes but helmets dont mitigate concussions revived from the impact of the ball to the head. Look at the NFL. They all wear helmets that are supposed to keep them from getting concussions. But they still happen.
