The next batter got out. MLB should be absolutely shamed for not reversing that call the next day. It's a huge deal and MLB shit all over themselves by not fixing it
I do think it should be reversed because it isn’t on the books but honestly this is the most memorable “perfect” game in MLB history. No true perfect game stands out more than this.
@@frederickpackard4613 If he turned towards second it would still go down as a base hit and getting out trying to take another base, unless you mean before even touching first because that would work
The game is basically enshrined. He retired the next batter and the game is commonly called the “28 out perfect game.” Baseball “official records” are kind of balanced by public archiving.
This call affected a player's personal stats. There have been many calls that have caused teams to lose games. I would say those are worse calls. Unless a player's personal stats are more important than the team as a whole?
This one hurts . Let's remember there's been less than 30 perfect games in MLB history. Everybody in that stadium felt for that pitcher. To be robbed of the greatest night of career. Ouch
Why Jim Joyce didn’t get that right in real time is beyond explanation. You are the only one in the stadium who thinks one way. You might want to get help.
There's another great performance that should be credited as a perfect game and isn't... a game in which Babe Ruth was the starting pitcher for the Red Sox... he walked the first batter and promptly got ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Ernie Shore took the mound in relief, picked off the runner at first, and proceeded to pitch 26 consecutive outs for a near perfect game. It is counted officially as a combined no-hitter.
Why even bother watching anymore. This is a game that used to be great but is now totally ruined by totally incompetent umpires. One has to wonder what interests are controlling these umpire’s decisions. They have to be corrupt, stupid or blind.
Worst call I ever saw, couldn't believe it when it happened, even more surprising was that the pitcher immediately forgave the umpire in the interview after the game, The umpire saw his mistake and approached the pitcher letting him know that he made a horrible call.
Played ball in the 60's, it's time for camera replay. Bad calls come from age. Look at the average major league age of umpires. CAMERA REPLAY. THE HELL WITH THE UNION.!!
I'll never forget them switching the feed to this game to show the last couple of outs of the perfect game. Then Jim Joyce decides it's opposite-day on the last out and calls the runner safe.
Worst call in MLB history! And just as bad? Homeplate umpire could have overturned the call. But not wanting to make a fellow ump look horrible? Which was already done by his own doing. A rare occurrence in baseball was denied a pitcher who performed perfectly that evening. Yet being that it was a perfect game? It should now be challenged and corrected. Then made right for the record books. Also for the pitchers MLB career stats. The Tigers won the game. So no change to the overall standings.
Don't worry he'll be safe after the review but the UMPS shouldn't be. These guys need to face penalties for their ineptitude. 3 cheers for electronic umps
Being from Cleveland I know that’s Jim Joyce’s call, but being such a huge call Our skipper would not of objected if he asked the second base umpire even the third base umpire for help I am tired of seeing this video on just about every single sports video where the umpire screwed up
Wow that wasn't even close ( this is why we need instant replay in all sports on every play ) these umps , reffs, judges all have friends laying bets 4 them & they cheat 2 win their bets
Was this before reviews? If not then the umpire even though he made a mistake he is human. If reviewed then the replay officials are the ones to be blamed because the replay shows the definite truth. Put blame where it is due
So like... pine tar game? They replayed that game from the wrong home run call on. Why can't something as easy as the last out just be changed? Don't even need to replay from any point of the game... the games over...
I didn’t have TV at the time I lived vicariously through my friends FB posts and updates. I was following it on ESPN Gamecast. Saw the last grounder and saw the call was safe. Expected to see E1 on the score sheet and blame Miggy. Nope. JJ blindspots the call and my FB feed lit up. Human error has only gotten much worse for the game I love so much.
As an official scorer in a foreign league, this situation is a nightmare to score... there's no error on the field, it's not really a hit, you can't give the umpire an E.... I might have given Cabrera an E to at least preserve the no-hitter, but, honestly that wouldn't be fair to Cabrera...
Except it wasn't a tie.. lol Also, tie goes to the runner is a myth. It's implied that if a runner reaches base at the same time, they have therefore beat the ball to the bag. But nowhere in the rule does it say tie goes to the runner. It is up to the Umpire's interpretation.
If it’s close, then safe? If it looked close to the ump, then safe? So maybe this was close. Was it less than 0.200 seconds? Is that the reaction time of an ump? Are there no reasonable fans?
