Can a slap to the carotid artery knock you out? Can women phase through solid objects? Will arts and crafts channels ever stop making bad women’s self defense videos featuring techniques that they have obviously never tested against live humans? Find out in episode 8!

It was more of a karate choppy slap thingy on the instructional video. I think it was just improper technique. I know my slaps knock out everybody. Sometimes my slap knocks out two people, because slaps are so devastating.... karate choppy slappy thingys, that is....

If you watch closely when Ramsey does the slap he actually did it wrong, he's supposed to hit it with the exact area of 3.72mm^2 and with the part of the hand, rotated 0.3radians about the wrist, where the initial position is palm inwards vertically straight, and there should by an upwards rotation of (pi)/4 radians - then even with a force of 0.1 Newtons would you be able to render your opponent unalive

The real problem is: you're not using the amerido-te teachings from master ken in the thrust of freedom. And about the slap, obviously you're suposed to do that with an ak-47 in your hand, so that when it fires, the hot cartridge goes into the clothes of the oponent, and he gets VERY unconfortable.

I really liked that trick with peeling a finger. I don't care how big and strong you are, if someone grabs your finger with their whole hand and twists it, you ARE going to feel it. You can usually do the same with other sensitive parts. You can always insert a finger into the other's nose and rip it apart, and once again, that person will feel it. Those are the kind of things that are usually considered as "fighting dirty", but if you are on the street, you have to consider every situation as a life/death encounter, so you should never shy away from those dirty tricks, especially if you are being caught off guard.
@astrol4b

I'm not going to insert fingers in other people nose, it's gross.
@PayneMaximus
@PayneMaximus 6 лет назад
Gross? Yes, but it can save your life, so like I said before, you should never shy away from anything that can make a difference between hitting the dust and living to see another day. Besides, in the case of women, would you say that it's grosser to insert your fingers into the guy's nose or be raped by him?

@MisterL2_yt
@MisterL2_yt 6 лет назад
why insert into nose rather than eyes?
@PayneMaximus
@PayneMaximus 6 лет назад
You can always do that, but the problem I see with poking the eyes is that you are at high risk of causing permanent damage to the assailant, and while I would not say you should really care about it if you fear for your life, usually most people don't really want to actually hurt the other.

He's all that in the flowery and blustery book, but I think he just wouldn't let you grab him. The finger technique is impossible to apply. What is reasonable to do is to try for a sideways throw (over your hip, to go for floor) or try for weakness in leg stance but you're really at a disadvantage there with both hands and most of upper body tied up like that. Slipping downwards will get you naked choked, moving front to rear is obviously not effective. Once on the floor you might be able to apply some leg lock. Martial arts is not magic.

My little siblings were play fighting and one of them performed the unconsensual choke Before separating them i thought it's be a good idea to show them how to stop this, since it's such an awful choke to begin with. I just told them to push the hands outside, horizontally, from the inside - and it was that simple. If a 9 year old can stop the choke by being told what to do once, i don't see why there's an entire industry dedicated to stopping this choke and non of them can get one that works

The problem might be when you're met with a stronger opponent.
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 6 лет назад
Mattmaes not really. One of them's a girl, and my brother was on top of her on the sofa' bearing down with all his weight. Your arms are weak pushing outwards, and it doesn't matter how much you push forwards because the force is being applied perpendicular to the direction you're pushing, so it's knly how much force you can push inwards that is significant. You'd need to be A LOT stronger to be able to withstand it, not a bit stronger, like you'd need to be a body builder trying to fight someone who's fresh out of hospital. Keep in mind i also ddin't show them about using any strikes, and they didn't have anywhere to move back too, and one is significantly stronger than the other. If there were more space you'd also be able to move backwards, extending their arms more (making them weaker) and potentially breaking their balance, making the pummel even easier. Every technique will fail if the person's strong enough, so it's not really a valid criticism i don't think. It's like saying 'here's a cross armlock which you can make work on someone much bigger because of the principles of Moments' then saying myeah but what if you're opponent can stop it?' 'Here's a magic death touch technique' 'yeah but what if your opponent can stop it' 'it would be very difficultm 'yeah but with if they did'. If you just needed to be a bit stronger to stop it then that'd be a fine criticism, but the level of strength necessary to stop that is nearly the same level of strength you'd need to stop a fully extended cross lock.
@hracionline164
@hracionline164 6 лет назад
jimmy alderson Self-defense is supposed to be effective and useful for everyone no matter their size... If you have to exert more than just an average or below amount of effort, they are not useful for everyday people... And if you meant a regular two-hands-on-neck choke, then a horizontal push-out simply might not work for a weaker against stronger person... That is why you train a real and proven martial art, to build up assets and manage more demanding things and increase your chances... And what you want to do in the street is to keep a person away from you, not pull her closer... Pushing arms out might just cause that person to get a grip of you and you might be done... And no, it's not like saying that... You need a technique to avoid or escape something, not just brute force, so, if you want your children to feel and be safer, send them to a real martial arts camp...
@jimmyalderson1639
@jimmyalderson1639 6 лет назад
Mattmaes in that case self defense doesn't exist Give me a technique that will work on a gorilla You can't think of one, because they don't exist. There are people out their who could curl their arm out of a fully extended cross armbar, that doesn't mean the armbar is a bad self defense technique. The reason is because the amount of strength required to curl out of the armbar is only going to be apparent in the top perventage of people, and they will be people who are unlikely to attack you(as if being attacked isn't unlikely enough for most people). Similar,y, the faft that this technique wouln't work lna. Gorilla is irrelevant, because it will work on almost everybody that attacks you. If i got 100 randomly selected people to try and rapechoke me inwould be able to use this technique on all of them, because the chances that somebody is so strong that they can resist basic body mechanics which are so strong and so fundamentally important that every grappling fighting style acknowledges them is so slim it's not going to show itself in that sample. Do you understand? It's like saying 'english is a bad language because you can't describe everything' or 'this pizza is bad because it doesn't taste like every single food', saying 'this technique is bad because if someone's a bit stronger than you they can stop is' is a very legitimate criticism. But saying 'this technique winmt work because if Thor came down from Asgarde and tried to choke you the defense wouldn't work' is not a legitimate criticism. But by all means give me a technique you think is truly self defense, any technique. It can be an attack or a defense. Just give me one technique you think exists where size truly doesn't matter no matter what

I'm short. I was lucky to be taught by Grandmaster Vince Palumbo on how to protect myself on the streets. He said it wasn't a one size fits all in martial arts. That everyone has a weakness, but can compensate. My weaknesses is being short, and weak in muscles. My strength is being able to use my weight (to use for force), flexibility, running, and ability to protect myself in small spaces. When I watch MMA, I pay attention to the short fighters. I've learnt they aren't good at punching tall fighters. Short fighters are good at wrestling. Short fighters also have an easy ability to sweep a tall fighter off their feet. Grandmaster Vince Palumbo would often tell me "imagine an attacker or monster. It can have four arms, be tall, and have big muscles. How would you defend yourself?...I recommend you run. But if you can't , show me what would you do? Practice everyday how to defend yourself. Be confident...not cocky."

A friend once hit the side of her neck on a filing cabinet and nearly passed out so a "chop" to the artery likely can cause some people to go unconsciousness (but not reliably). Women generally have less muscle protecting the artery so that was probably a factor.

If you hit with the edge of the hand, like your hand in the shape of a knife, you would get a better effect as the force would be concentrated on a smaller area than a open hand slap does. There's just simply no escape from the two-handed rape choke, it's one of the most deadly techniques ever invented. Some interesting facts: The two-handed rape choke was first described by Alexander the Great in 328 BC after witnessing ancient Kazakh practices, later on it was perfected by the Japanese who called it the Ho Rapi Joku.

Like another commenter mentioned with that first technique, it's actually a solid idea, but she did it wrong and expected too much out of it. You can get a nice hit, striking anywhere on the side of the neck with your hand, but not with a slap, but with a chop. And even then, you won't knock someone out, you'll get a bit of pain, which is a nice way to open them up for other things.

I dont believe it really works, but at least seems better than a slap... I think that hit on the chin could be a ko strike if done correctly... So even if it wouldnt end in a ko, that hit on the neck would hurt alot (the one in the video i saw)

Well, that depends on how much force you can generate with that judo chop. If it’s in the neighborhood of “Thai shin kick power”, sure. But if it’s closer to “slap from a much smaller woman” power, probably not.

Ramsey, I found your page yesterday and I already love it. I am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and spent 20 years in the Army learning various other fighting styles along the way. One thing I will say, and obviously it's only my opinion, is you knew this technique was coming. Even if you think you weren't bracing for it, you probably were in some form or fashion. This technique works in the right circumstances and usually those circumstances are when the technique is unexpected and generally with a bit more force. Just my thoughts.

Ramsey, once I was training Kung Fu and the gym's teacher said that one of the best ways to escape from a bear hug is to relax the body and just make the weight do the job untill the opponent leaves you. Can you test this technique, since I've never recieved a bear hug after those clases.
@dfpguitar
@dfpguitar 6 лет назад
sounds like a good way to end up in a choke hold/headlock. If you relax your body to 'drop' out of the bottom of the attackers arms this seems inevitable. However, attempting to squat down seems like a good way to exhaust the attacker, but you would need to be super cautious to evade a choke hold if you were to slide down.

I had a dude who was an 8th degree in aikido, another high rank in Japanese jujutsu, and had been doing karate his whole life as well. He showed me a strike to the side of the neck and I went black, woke up to his hand in my face offering to help me up lol. Personally I don't want to have to train for 60 some years just to be able to pull off a super accurate strike that he was showing, especially considering a real fight is so chaotic and adrenaline etc. Rather have solid boxing/kickboxung, bjj, and wrestling and not rely on pseudo-mystic pressure points.

Because women who don't know anything about self defence a) can get scared off if the teacher is a big imposing dude, and b) find a woman teacher more relatable - they think that if a woman is doing it then it's got to have worked for her, or similar. They want to learn off someone that looks like themselves. Often the people who peddle unscrupulous martial arts techniques are just in it for the money, no thought to the consequences, so male or female the main difference is target audience - bullshido peddlers sell that to guys who want to be ninjas, and self-offence teachers peddle that to scared women, and both are selling dangerous overconfidence and notions that are more likely to backfire and get the person hurt.

I love this series 😂😂😂 it always tickles my funny bones. If you want to defend against bear hugs, there's this cool move I saw in the Bubishi and in an uechi-ryu kata bunkai - If it's an overarm bearhug with intent to control your movement or suplex or whatever, simply move forward (as much as possible) to create a little space btw your opponent's crotch and your butt, then proceed to ram one of your hands down to his crotch and grab your opponent's crown jewels while simultaneously moving the other hand upwards to loosen his grip. Finally, after he's let go, finish him off and get the f**k away from there! The finger thing works too!
@kkarx
@kkarx 6 лет назад
You could as well go into kiba-dachi(this lowers yours stance and gets you in more stable stance than your attackers stance, it will also get your attacker out of balance if he holds you really tight) then use your elbow to strike belly and fist to strike groin...

Ramsey, surely a grown man should be able to utilize the techniques to escape the grip of a woman who likely isn't close to half his strength and especially so if she offers no resistance, right? Just saying, it looked like even though Joyce had a good grip on that bear hug, she was still offering no resistance and it was seemingly impossible to break her grip. So if the technique doesn't work without resistance, what are the odds it will work against somebody that puts all their strength into it?
@RamseyDewey

@josephbedwell3164

@@RamseyDewey I say if you can't over power somebody with half your size and strength, you're probably not walking out of the situation. As stated, Joyce just applied a half decent grip and offered no resistance with the bear hug and you couldn't break it. So probably not an optimal escape plan. As opposed to a technique that easily over powers an opponent that's easily twice your size and likely twice as strong.

I'm sorry but I have to call BS on the finger idea. I'm not saying it's bad(I don't know) but TBH your demonstration of it had to the same level of non-resistance you have been ragging about. I don't see someone doing a bear hug and not going to start throwing you around and eventually end up on the ground. The victim themselves are likely to start trying to jump around as a first natural reaction anyway, not calmly start ripping at fingers right away in a stable position. I think the biggest problem here is the ultimate answer is know how to grapple. It's not the simple fast answer of "DO THIS TECHNIQUE TO SAVE YOUR LIFE" and I don't think that kind of answer exists in any world.
@aflacduck2
@aflacduck2 6 лет назад
I "think" once the adrenaline gets pumping that an average female is not going to break the finger grips of an average male. And let's be honest, even 99.999% of guys would not be able to think to pull on someone's fingers being ambushed with a bear hug. It's just not something natural to think of doing. Maybe also cause it would be pretty dumb for a guy to try and bear hug another guy vs hit them on the back of the head with something hard and/heavy so I don't know. I always think the easiest tactic is be aware of your surroundings and if they happen for whatever reason to not be good, carry a gun. Even displaying one stops the threat 90% of the time so there's only a 10% chance you even need to pull the trigger. Best equalizer for women since they do not need to be athletic. Just my .02c.

Thanks Dewey for addressing the "neck slap carotid artery knockout" myth. If it really worked that way , a good sharp tight gi choke would knock somebody out if you applied and released it straightaway...I mean how is THAT not "disrupting circulation and nerves" but in reality it has to be applied and held to work. In fact if it worked that way why wouldn't a good slap on the thigh at the femoral artery not knock you out? It's so irresponsible for people to be teaching it, it's a dangerous fantasy to rely on.
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 6 лет назад
A lot of self defense “experts” teach this. If it was that easy to knock someone out, the neck slap would be the #1 go to striking technique in the UFC (there’s no rule against it)
@Isnogood12
@Isnogood12 6 лет назад
The first one has a sound theory, but poor execution (from the original instructional video). A sharp blown to one of the carotid arteries can easily block it for a moment, in which case your body's vasoreceptors think there's an obstruction in the artery and will immediately drop blood pressure by expanding your veins. This in turn will often cause dizzyness, nausea, or even short term unconsciousness. This is also how carotid artery strangleholds, like RNC work, causing unconsciousness after a few seconds. I disagree that you'd need to block both of them, as it doesn't really have much to do with actual blood flow, and I've seen several strangleholds that only affect one carotid be effective and cause unconsciousness. Two is always better than one, ofc! This is one of the reasons why strangleholds are still allowed on "soft" sports like judo (except the asshats in IJF banned them from standing attacks which is BS), they do not cause more than a short unconsciousness, and you'd have to block the oxygen from reaching the brain for at least 4 minutes for there to even be a risk of brain damage. Blocking the carotid artery for a moment is also used for carotid artery massage which I think is the dumbest idea ever. FOR THIS TECHNIQUE TO WORK, however, you would need to hit the artery directly with a sharp strike, not the palm of your hand, and you would need to cause enough trauma for the artery to block for a moment. To block a large artery like the carotid, you need a lot of force, because the blood pressure there is pretty big (scientific term!). A simple throat punch is far more efficient. :) What the lady COULD have done as well would have been to strike the assailant directly on the ear. That causes some amazing results, but I don't suggest you go and try it.
@ceren3k
@ceren3k 6 лет назад
As a physician I disagree with this explanation of the theory and that it works in theory. Chokes need to block both carotids to render unconsciousness. One carotid getting blocked all of a sudden happens all the time in carotid surgery (we use clamps), and if the other carotid is patent this will not cause any issues - and these operations are often done with the patient awake specifically to monitor neurology. When the brain experiences low blood flow the body’s response is to raise the blood pressure - this is also seen all the time in ischemic stroke. Carotid massage is supposed to simulate a high blood pressure by stimulating the carotid pressure receptors in the carotid body, located at the carotid bifurcation, close to the jaw. This in turn will send a signal by the vagus nerve to the heart to beat slower and to the veins to dilate to lower blood pressure. This treatment is still sometimes used for certain cardiac arrhythmias, and stimulating both sides simultaneously is expressly discouraged so as not to accidentally block both carotids and choke the patient. I guess in theory a strike to the carotid body could cause unconsciousness without having anything to do with the carotid arteries per se (vasovagal collapse, I.e. fainting), however, it is quite a small target and actually protected by things like the sternocleidomastoid muscle. One of the mechanisms that those kicks to the side of the neck shown on the video result in k.o. might be this (enough force to affect everything in the area including carotid bodies), not sure about that though.

@Isnogood12
@Isnogood12 6 лет назад
No, I totally agree with him. The only thing we disagreed on was whether blocking just one carotid during a stranglehold would be enough to cause unconsciousness, which I still stand behind as I've seen it happen first hand. BUT! There were other circumstances that may have also affected the situation. It happened during randori practice under a lot of physical stress, so both the person's pulse and bp were elevated etc, so maybe in that situation it is enough. I'll talk with other folks at our dojo about it and see if there was something else I missed there, seeing as it was a few years back.

The first technique, the Brachial Stun, is more designed as a counter measure movement but can be used as an offensive attack. When I was going through Military Police Academy in Fort Leonard Wood, we sparred a lot and one woman I sparred with hit me with this and the next thing I remember was going limp as two instructors were holding me up. She used her wrist and hit me directly on the Brachial Plexus Origin nerve. Needless to say, she won and I had a throbbing headache for the next ten minutes. A simple slap will not give the results needed for a successful stun.
