MN couple turns grain bin into urban brewery, store & venue

Sandy and Jay Boss Febbo looked for a location to open their microbrewery, they were looking for something within their self-financed budget. They approached architect Geoffrey Warner, known for his prefab designs (WeeHouse, LightHotel) who suggested a grain bin. It was a perfect fit for the Boss Febbos who with their organic brews were dedicated to “land stewardship and farmworker health” and liked the idea of this very visible homage to the farm.
Using a 42-foot-round, prefabricated, corrugated-metal grain bin, Warner cut plenty of windows and used the grain entry point as a skylight so the 1300-square-foot structure reflects the light of the day like a sundial. By using multi-functional furniture, mostly on wheels and stackable, the couple finds the small space large enough for brewing, packing, tasting, and events. Located in an industrial zone of St Paul, the bin, with R-28 insulation, easily weathers the Minnesota winters.

What an absolutely charming brewery, of beautiful and elegant design. All that remains is to try the beer!

Your guests (and their architect & furniture designer friend) have put an incredible amount of thought into this project. The running commentary she gave was fascinating and full of clear reasoning & detail. Hope the business is a HUGE success and they go on to replicate similar micro breweries all around the rural/farming communities that have a thirst for the Amber Liquid.

They are from a booming metropolitan area which just held the Superbowl. This is all agenda 2030 hyper marketing. Beer is neat, and all, but there is nothing "rural" about this expensive academic exercise.

Ray OfMinneapolis, hey, they built it with their money. Live and let live. After all, it was empty space with no existing value, and now it’s a viable business.

+Ray OfMinneapolis : I guess you have the advantage of local knowledge Ray. I'm a rank outsider living at the other end of the earth and was just commenting on the content revealed in the video. I had no idea there was some sort of hidden agenda, so will be more cautious in expressing my naive enthusiasm for such apparently marvellous business ideas.

So glad to see this posted Kristen! You guys did a great job capturing the feel of the property and surrounding area. I was a part of the landscape/shelter installation and still learned a few things from the video. I'm excited to see the prairie fill out over the next couple of years, it will really change the feel of the space.

This is innovative, exciting and perfect for the MN area or anywhere that has grain silos. Great commentary on the design and use of space. Would love to go visit!

The Pantheon oculus is the first thing I thought of as well. This concept certainly expands architecturally the realm of the possible for creating living spaces. Could it be used in forested areas, in cold climates, would rain be too noisy, how about if it were covered in wood shingles?

I'm surprised they can mill out in the open like that. All other milling I've seen occurs in a concrete block shelter. The fine dust is highly flammable.

Please...an urgent Question. Currently building a new brewery in SeouL, Korea. My understanding is that for the summer time... HVAC system for Brewery facility is of no problem since Fermenters and brites tank will be GLYCOL jacketed. But I learned that when brewing ALE beer types(which is mostly the case for craft brewing) the temperature shouldn't fall below 10 degrees Celsius during winter. Thus, my question is 1) is it necessary to install some sort of overall heating system for the brewing environment? If so, what type of system? 2) And if it gets installed. Does it have to be turned on 24-7? I reckon it would be waste of electricity cost and all.

How did you insulate the roof? Is the corrugated material on the interior walls of a lighter grade than the outside? Did you get it from the silo company? If not, can you just bend it to shape? How did you fasten it to the outer layer?

@Ray What does that have to with anything else here?
@maxe1211
@maxe1211 6 лет назад
For many rooms or buildings a Hexagon might be the most efficient form to build. But in relation between area and wall length the circle is the most efficient. Also in heating/cooling and material needed.
@maxe1211

Firstly I was asking you what your comment: "geo-hexa Nero linguistic programming. Grant speak. James J money bags." has to do with the video or the comment you answered to. "We" are not pretending anything. And the Video I was watching was about a grainsilo, wich is a cylinder not a geodesic dome. So whats your point?

Okay I'll take a step back, the detailing the woman was talking about displays a lot of passion and clever thinking.
