MO Diagram for N2+ (Molecular Orbital)

There are two MO diagrams you need to memorize for diatoms (N2, O2, Ne2, etc).
One is for the elements up to Nitrogen. The other is for AFTER nitrogen (starting at oxygen).
Then, just fill the orbitals with electrons as per usual.
Check me out: www.chemistnate...

For everyone moaning about the bottom half of the paper being cut off: The only thing missing is the 1s orbital, which is considered a core electron shell and is pretty much always filled with 2 electrons, unless you're looking at H or He. He probably figured it wasn't really necessary.

It's simple, Most teachers spent half their lives learning this, they don't know how to make it easier because in their mind, this is already 2+2. For a real-life example, find a kid learning fractions and try to help them understand. Headaches I tell you.

i once believed that accepting was the right way to do it... however, now I firmly believe that it just takes some extra time and effort to 'understand'.. you may have to be a bit determined to find out the exact 'reason' behind anything, as its less probable that it will be easily available. However, understanding is only the right way. If you are happy accepting facts, then one day it will be cause of your unhappiness. This is what i have realised from my experiences.

one easy way to remember the difference in the MO diagrams for B,C,N | O,F is by using their atomic number Z. if Z pi 2p (in terms of energy level) i,e sigma 2p is above pi 2p if Z>=8, sigma 2p < pi 2p (in terms of energy level) i.e sigma 2p is below pi 2p

@astropgn

There are specific reasons as to why the diagram is the way it is. You don't have to "memorize" it. But it requires some more knowledge to understand it why. specifically, quantum mechanics. These orbitals came from the quantum theory of molecular orbitals. So you could memorize these orbitals, but there is a reason for them and you can understand why if you want.

its shaped like this due to the energy value.( as my teacher said am not sure if its true on not) the lower bonds in the diagram needs less energy that's why it forms firstly then the rest follows in the same manner. for example pi 2p - bonds needs less energy than sigma 2p- bond therefore the pi 2p - bonds is formed firstly then sigma 2p.

Why is the MO diagram for O2 in the 2p orbital.... starting with sigma 2p, then pi 2p above it?
@beingfor1825
@beingfor1825 8 лет назад
+Rebecca Chen It has to do with p-orbital symmetry which dictates the p orbital interaction. sigma means that interaction between two p orbitals is head to head, and the electron density is located along the internuclear axis.

+Rafael Vieira Hello, in this case, you will be using sigma, pi, pi, and then sigma. however, when you draw the atomic orbitals for nitrogen and oxygen, draw the oxygen orbitals in a bit of lower position than nitrogen because oxygen has lower energy than nitrogen.

Hey Nate, why don't we care about the 1S MO in this case? Wouldnt that account for 4 Valence E's?
@eldaly1
@eldaly1 9 лет назад
Probably because we are only concerned with valence electrons. The 2s and 2p electrons are valence, whereas the 1s electrons are not. Likewise, in the MO diagram we are only looking at the 2nd energy level, so we only account for the 9 valence electrons in N2+.
