In the 3rd installment of our 4 part series we spend a little time doing the "trifecta" which is poison spyder, golden spike, and gold bar rim. These trails can be easily done in a day with capable vehicles but at almost 20 miles of rock crawling they are definitely not to be underestimated. We have our usual slew of breakdowns. Our pump keeps whining from not being able to bleed it properly, i was hoping one of the harbor freight hose clamps giving up on life was letting some air into the lines but it only got marginally better after. Now that we're home i was finally able to bleed the last bit of air out of the box and it's much better, though i think I need to drill and tap a toyota box to replace this aftermarket one we "upgraded" to.
After that it's mostly smooth sailing until I thought we blew up another fan motor. We've gone through 1 fan motor and a couple fuses with this single fan setup, as well as having the thermo-switch ground out and kill both high and low speed fan when the truck gets hot. Now we run 1 to key-on and the other is switched with our sPod. Our original fan was missing the c clip that held the plastic blades onto the motor itself which caused us to almost grenade the engine during a 2k foot elevation gain in the sierras (on dirt) last year. After a few e-mails back and forth with their tech support they pretty much told us "that sucks" and gave us a part number for the clip to go out and buy ourselves. I bring a spare fan motor on longer trips, but since this wheeling isn't actually as remote as we're used to, i didnt bother bringing it here. A mechanical fan is ultimately the most reliable but with the insane amount of up travel this truck gets there just isn't room for it. Thanks for following along! The next episode is the most exciting one by far and we can't wait for you guys to watch the final installment in our series.
