Mob Boss Dies Awaiting Prison- Andrew "Mush" Russo 

I retired as a Lt. from the NY State Dept of Corrections in 2010 after 38 years. Always could tell the mob guys. Most of them did their time well, followed the rules without complaining and showed respect to fellow inmates and staff. The couple I used to talk to on a regular basis and got to know a little were the kind of guys you'd want to grab a beer with. We had an old Italian priest who ran the chapel. He had so many of them working in the chaple with him we use to call the chaple Ozone Park. Lol.

As much as people want to say "look at his life" etc and judge him, we ALL work with the hand we are dealt. I joined the Army a month before my 21st birthday (45 now) to get myself away from situations that killed and imprisoned most of my friends. Some of the guys got really involved in terrible things. I still think of them as friends. I understand.

As the saying goes..."It takes a village to raise a child" and a community of men who engage in shenanigans is no different. Boys become men by observing and replicating the actions of those they admire greatly. Some of my greatest teachers were men who made mistakes and I often learned from their misgivings...not always, but often.

I think in his heart Andrew was happy you got away from that life. The fact that he told your father that he missed you and only had nice things to say about you says a lot about him as a person.

Love hearing how Michael built his mob career by ensuring he paid off his creditors to build a reputation. Valued advice. Russo had a life full of prison hopefully he had some moments of peace and happiness. Would love to hear stories of Andrew's sons as they sound like they were/are big names in the Colombo family.

I think it is horrible how they are going after these men so hard who are older. It also upsets me that they refuse so many compassionate release requests. These are men and deserve to be treated with compassion regardless. Worse criminals are not only still on the street, but are sitting behind benches making the decisions. Mr Franzese IMO you are spot on regarding your assessment of the comparison of those involved in "the life" and those involved in our government. As far as judging who is the more evil as perceived by the lay-person, their are wearing blinders to hide the truth about our corrupt government leaders.. The lay person will call the government reps pristine, and at the same time label those in "the life" as pure evil. However........ Mixed feelings here. Russo may have been good personally to Michael, but end of the day, can't hold him as any kind of 'good guy' - when you're linked to making people's lives a misery through the Mafia's crimes on a daily basis, to the end of your life. He didn't walk away and be remorseful like Michael did - that might have been the difference.
