At the end of the movie, he goes back and lives with the elderly couple. Tom Hanks asked them why they didn't have children and the woman told him, "We met too late in life." I think they were the best choice the boy could have made for people to take care of him. They can teach him traditional values, the importance of hard work, and they will love him as their own.

The casting of Tom Hanks in this movie was a big risk. He was known for playing some of the most likable characters in cinema (Forrest Gump, Woody, Chuck Noland), so casting him as a gangster was definitely risky, because he could have easily become too likable to take seriously as one. But, in this movie, he perfectly balances out being the caring father with the menacing gangster.

@@joshuamartindale868 It's a very good adaptation in thought. Hanks gangster basically becomes a Ronin. The art in Lone Wolf surpasses by far the Perdition, and the narrative structure in the adaptation is heavy, lagging. In whole Road isn't a good read. I'd take Lone Wold any day. In this rare case the og comic is worse than the film. Road to Perdition has a cousin, A History of Violence, which film version (by Cronenberg) is also way, way better than the og. comic. Also very nice to see some comic book people in a comment section!

Yknow Michael, I’d like to point out that one of the biggest takeaways of this film and its resolution comes at the end. When Sullivan lays dying, his sons last words to him are “I couldn’t do it” to which he replies “I know”. Michael and his son are sent down the Road to Perdition because of the life that Michael Sr. lead. But in the end, I think he found a measure of redemption, which seems in stark contrast to the film’s title. Yes, he was a bad man. Yes, he did what he did, but in the end, his ultimate achievement was that he raised a son who wouldn’t succumb to the same vices and choices he made.

In the film Sullivan tells Michael at one point, one reason he treated him differently then the younger brother Peter was because Michael reminded Mike of himself and he feared his son becoming like him That last line with Michael saying he couldn't pull the trigger is him making the point he's not like his father in the sense of his ability for violence/to kill And that is Sullivan's greatest wish, that his son would not be like him in that way and he wasn't.

My son was a problem for me from ages 15-25. Went to prison on a 6 month rider (sp). But before he went to prison he had joined the Union. They held his position although he was only an Apprentice. Flash forward 10 years. Turned out as a JOURNEYMAN. Became a respected FORMAN ,a respected GENERAL FORMAN, and is now a SUCCESSFUL SUPERINTENDENT for a world wide multi billion dollar corporation. IF anybody knows the hardships of being a father, it is me. My love for him never faltered. He was once put in a juvenile detention center far away from our home. I moved to that town. Leaving behind my wife and 2 younger daughters to be near so I could visit him on Tuesday and Saturday. Not knowing anyone in that city, I slept in the back of my pickup truck in a sleeping bag in the middle of winter. Found a job, GOT a small apartment. Your unconditional love for your son never waivers. It is tested. Just as GOD TESTED JOB. I am now at the end of my life. I am disabled and not able to work anymore and survive on Social Security. But I have no regrets. I get inspiration from my wife, family, and scripture.

In that scene, you realize Michael doesn’t really know his son. He loves his son and does everything he can to keep him safe, but when they relax and talk about things outside of the Mafia business, Michael doesn’t have much to say to his son. In that sense, he’s just like John Rooney. Both love their biological sons and will do everything to protect them, but, when they deal with each other outside of the mob, they don’t have much to do with each other.

As far as iv seen so far, funerals are more of a laugh compared to weddings. Where I live in connemara, the toughest part of the day, but the best is when we all chip in to fill the grave at the end of the burial, then we drink like fish and reminisce,laugh etc. It's tough but it's closure in more ways than one.👍

My favorite quotes from the movie: When Conor asks Mike if his son can keep a secret Mike responses “he’s my son” At the end of the movie Michael is talking (closing the movie) and says “when people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man or if he had no good in him at all I respond he was my father” . I teared up at the end when I first put that together.

One thing I have to admire about former mob and criminals are the ones who specifically made sure their kids never became like them or took up the mantle like they did. It's one thing to make the choices for your own life and live by whatever factors played a part in shaping those choices It's another to rope your kids into it and get then involved in something that can alter their lives or threaten their souls... And i find that element of the film to be interesting Whereas Connor was raised to be a gangster it's clear that he lost his soul because of it Whereas Mike Sullivan sacrifices everything, literally everything to ensure his son won't lose his soul and will have a chance to be something more When Michael tells him he couldn't pull the trigger, it gives Mike his dying wish cause he was afraid his son might grow to be a man of violence like him, but now he knows he won't and he can pass in peace.

Peter O'toole said in 'My Favorite year' when he's an actor nearing the end, "dying is easy, comedy is hard." in other words, if you can do comedy(being funny whenever they say ''roll'') flawlessly, you can play any dramatic role. and Hanks has done flawless comedy.

Never understood why she and my step- dad disliked me so much. But I tried for 40 years to be a good son, being criticized the whole time, before I finally just gave up. I'm not bitter or angry, just got tired of the negativity. I'm a happy successful man at 55, and have 2 talented sons. ❤❤❤❤

The ending always gets to me. When Paul Newman bodyguards have all been killed and he just turns around to hanks and says “I’m glad it was you”. Then hanks kills him but has a look on his face saying “I loved you. Why are you making me do this”? It was like hanks was torn by both love and hate.

That's why I did not like this movie. To me, it was ridiculous. I think of John Gotti shooting big Paul (I know Gott wasn't a shooter on that hit) and Paul's final words being "I'm glad it was you." Dumb. I'm not disrespecting your opinion and it's cool you and others liked it, but I thought it was beyond corny.

@@nickbrown9163 Haha yeah I see what you mean but when it boils down to it, it's still a movie ya know?? It's a tragedy filled with overarching themes, it's great but it doesn't portray the general scumbaggishness of real gangsters. Paul Newman's character represents a gangster yes but really the archetype of a patriarch. He is honorable (even while being a gangster.) Real life bosses aren't like that.

I have a lot of guilt as a father with my oldest son. At 18 a had to remove my son from my house and we didn’t speak for over 17 yrs. My son was in and out of trouble with the law. My wife and mother had been in contact with our son and he was in need of help and my wife and I talked and agreed to let our son back in to help him get back on his feet. Well things really haven’t changed he was smoking weed in our home while we still had a minor our daughter and he was arguing with his mother about working so I told him he needed to leave again. Our son was a type 1 diabetic from the age of 4. Anyway after maybe 3-4 weeks of our son being gone my wife and I found him, he past from his diabetes. There was no insulin in his apartment. Being a father has rewards and some serious heart aches. My heart is shattered.
@xhagast
@xhagast Год назад
If your son did not want to work, then he was doomed. Period. You would be gone one day and he would be old and alone. Pushed out he might have been forced to work and look after himself. Kept at home and enabled he would have had no chance. You are not to blame for his death unless you really screwed up his upbringing. People make their choices, at 18, at 35. At 10. He chose not to do the barest of minimums, work to pay his bills. Or even to make you let him stay at your home. Your guilt is yours, but not the BLAME.
