I remember watching this movie when it first came out with my father I was very young maybe 9-10years old and I didn't really understand much of the message behind it. A couple months back I decided to re-watch it mainly because of the nostalgic feeling that it brought me and the memories of being with my father. The hidden message that I found in this movie was that even though times get hard and all has been lost. You must never give up
This movie was beautiful. Fantastic supporting cast. Very moving. I’ve seen it half a dozen times. I can’t imagine anyone other than Tim Robbins in that role.
Surely the Scene were Andy emerges from the Sewer Pipe, and looks up to Heavens & realises he's Free.!! Is most powerful&, even after seeing movie countless times, it still moves me
Always well done, Michael. If I may suggest. I would really like to see Mob Monday do Once Upon A Time In America. (The early 80s DeNiro one)... Great film that a lot of people have never seen.
It’s been like less than a year since you started this youtube thing & you blew up compared to other channel’s that take years to reach where you are.. been here since day one, i know you are officially going to be 70 in several months. I hope you live another 30 something years like your father, you’re literally a living legend. A walking Relic of the past & History itself.. keep it coming mikey
I visited the prison in Mansfield, Ohio, where this movie was shot. Man, what a creepy place. On a lighter note, they had the prop tunnel that Andy escaped out of on display, they even let my nephew crawl through it
Awesome. I am a couple of hrs away from Mansfield. Unfortunately I only recently found out about this movie being filmed at the old penitentiary. There was a documentary that aired after the movie a few years ago. I would have loved to crawl through that tunnel. LOL :)
This is my favorite movie of all-time. I saw it in January 1995 as a 14-year-old. It was released in late 1994 but still played in the theaters being it was a Best Picture nominee. I walked out of the theater completely blown away.
Michael was made for the camera. Great voice sharp mind & a talented production & design crew backing him up. Michael & Sammy are bringing it strong. A stunning tour de force#
One of the greatest films of all time, Mr. Franzese you areTruly inspirational. Your journey it’s almost unbelievable your story is utterly transformative.
The contrast in colours the whole way through the movie it’s dark and grey and then that scene at the end when they are both free. Bright blue beautiful. That was amazing.
Here’s some movies I’d like to see reviewed: Miller’s Crossing, Eastern Promises, Heat, The French Connection, There Will Be Blood, King of New York, the Irishman, Gangs of New York, No Country for Old Men, Mystic River, Shotcaller, The Town, Mean Streets
Off all the mob movie monday editions, this is certainly the most unexpected so far. Brilliant movie and personally this is my all time favourite movie and I dont think it will ever change. The fact that it’s impact has touched so many people’s lives, even to a former mobster who then manages to turns his life around is further proof that the movie has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. Thank you for the review, Mr Franzese. Awesome! :)
Just watching the "tease" intro, damn Michael.... your getting better with your messaging. Also, the part about " institutionalized" All of us feel that way sometimes, remember in this world we are subject to falling into routine.
Hello Michael, I just ran across here on Utube which includes an interview with your mom. The site is on The New York Mafia titled " The FBI Joe Colombo, Sonny Franzese"
I always got a chuckle from the fact that Andy's rock hammer was hidden in the book of Exodus in his bible lol. Another fun fact: The aria that Andy plays over the loudspeaker is Duettino-Sull'aria, from The Marriage of Figaro. They're singing about killing her husband. Andy went to jail for killing his wife
Imagine one of the prison guards who was decent to you or maybe stood up for you some time watches this and hears what you say about how many were good guys. Can imagine they would feel rather proud seeing you now
The Shawshank Redemption is the only movie where if someone says "it's the Greatest movie of all time".... I will never argue or dispute them on it. "Get busy living, or get busy dying. That's the damned truth." -Best lines of the film.
One thing I couldn't understand when I was locked up was why everyone would want to watch this movie? We're already in prison , why would you want to watch a movie about prison? Never made sense to me.......
This is a brilliant movie, I never tire of watching it. I totally agree with your comments. Hope and faith are very important, you were very right about Calito going back to his old neighbourhood, you only get drawn back in.
Mob movie Monday! The Shawshank Redemption is great movie. Definitely have watched this movie many times & never gets old... Great review! How about a review of Blood In Blood Out, a movie of prison gangs in California. Big following in the Mexican American community.
I'd like to you what your thoughts are on 'The Green Mile' starring Tom Hanks as a guard on death row. Another movie based on a Stephen King Novel. The only two books Mr. King wrote that I liked, and both movies made me cry.
This movie isnt just a prison film its a good gospel christian film to never giving up on hope and has so many parallel scenes to the birth of jesus like when andy escapes prison it symbolizes his rebirth like when christ was resurrected and when the police discovered andys empty cell was and allegory to jesus empty tomb.
Michael, your story is such a great one. I thought I had an interesting life. But you're back on the side of good now and that's what counts. I have an original poster from this movie from when I was in TV. It's one of my all-time favorites along with Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. I got a question for you: Bobby Darin sings a song called "Mack the Knife." Was there a real Mack the Knife, or Sewky Tawdry, or Lotta Linya, or Lucy Brown? Or were those just made up names? You know, The shark has pearly teeth...
Great review. Yet I was disappointed that you didn't touch on 2 facets of the movie that are at least stereotypical of prison life: 1 the harrassment and abuse from the "sisters" and how Andy met "Red" as a man who can get things (rock hammer, posters, cigarettes, etc).
Wonderful movie based on a story by Stephen King, he wrote also the Green mile, a short story made into a movie as well.I recommend to see that one too.I also loved the movies The birdman of Alcatraz and Escape from Alcatraz. also great movies. Not sure if you done a review on them? I have started to watch your videoa just recently.
The main thing i take away from most prison films is usually the same. What is the point of prison. It should be like it is in norway. I don't judge anyone because anyone can mess up and end up in prison.
Horrible memories of a marijuana charge and going to Mansfield Reformatory back in 89. Looking forward to beautiful memories retiring in Zihuatenajo 2022. Great movie.
Might I suggest that you watch and review a movie called "Murder in the first" It suffered greatly because it came out about the same time as Shawshank. Starring Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater. I MUCH better movie than Shawshank IMO. BTW it deals with something you are VERY familiar with, Solitary confinement..
"Andy is free, he's on the outside.... He takes a trip to Mexico or wherever the heck he went" FBI : so, Mr. Franceze, you're saying you know Andy DuFresne's whereabouts? Michael " did youse hear me say I knew for sure? I ain't saying nuthin about nobody."
Hi Michael I can't remember a bad vlog/video you've made I love them just shows how much someone can change I bet the FBI placed beta on how long you'd be out of the mafia and how quick you'll be violated but you showed them and are a great role model to me and most of all you're family from David in Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪🇺🇸🇮🇹🇮🇪🇺🇸🇮🇹
Michael, there is an old movie from the 80s called Bad Boys starring Sean Penn, Esai Morales and of course Clancy Brown playing his usual asshole role lol, have you seen it? it's fantastic. Brown also played in Pet Semetary at 1 and 2, he just has that asshole face I guess and always plays a bad guy and he plays it very well. I'm an older movie buff, love the old black and white films.
Think this is one of the best movies ever made. One of my top five movies. I’ve watched that movie about 115 times so you can imagine lol just how good this movie is.
“These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized.” What a genius and accurate line.
I have friends who i see 3 months a year(Others are gone longer of course) and those 3 are usually June, July and August. They hit the streets during summer, eventually can't figure out anything to do with their lives and end up doing something stupid to get thrown back in. So many times its a crime nobody on earth would commit. But they can't function outside the structure of those walls and it's saddening to see. They simply don't know how to anymore. That quote from the film most definitely nails it. And not just the quote but the way Freeman delivers it. The false hope of getting back to how it used to be and the desperation they feel. It's heavy. Except for the worst of the worst, it's hard not to feel for a lot of these guys. The idea of an innocent being thrown inside makes it that much easier for the viewer to relate.
1994 was an amazing year for movies. You also had Speed, True lies, Wolf, The professional, Legends of the fall, Clear and present danger, and others i could go on with.
I am 61 years old and my son died in my arms over 20 years ago. I wanted to not live any more and am still here. This talk seem to me like you were talking straight to me. I am going to start to live again, because God must have a plan for me. Thank you for this message.
One of my favorite moments in all of film is when the warden slams down the newspaper down then sees the cops coming he knew at that moment he was finished and it truly is great seeing him get what he deserved
"They send you here for life and that's exactly what they take." Sounds like words Michael Franzese would have come up with. Excellent review brother 🤙
@@michaelfranzese love to have a sit down with you Michael I was so lucky I never got pinched only by the grace of God I live for him now and the best decision I ever made.
Fun Fact: The guy who plays Hadley, Clancy Brown, was offered to tour actual federal max security prisons to get a feel for how guards operate, but he turned them down. The reason he gave? "I'm playing an asshole guard and I don't want to tarnish the reputations of actual prison guards."
@@Appetitebeats487 Coming from a couple of people who've served prison time, some are pretty cool and are just doing their jobs. Yes, some are legitimate assholes.
@@barryschalkwijk9388 as good as the movie is the book was great. In the book it doesn't push as hard that Andy was innocent. I think the evidence in the book points toward Andy being guilty.
@@adamirishconundrum851 disagree, i've read it 2 times and though you don't get the "convict with hard evidence" you'd have to rely on an unreliable narrator to assume he is guilty. Imho.
@@DavieLad85 lol that fart line makes me laugh every time 🤣 _Carter as the Warden:_ C'mon! I'll cripple that guy who keeps graping you in the shower! *CUTS TO JOE BOGGS GETTING HIS SHINS BEATEN INTO JELLY* _Peter Dufresne:_ awww! I like that guy!:(
