Leno's car show is about the best online TV available right now, IMHO. Really enjoying it, and I like how he treats his guests - like the experts they are.
My place of employment bought a set of these about 5 years ago and they are FANTASTIC!! We decided on the mobile column lifts because of my shops' very small size. They are very , very manuverable. I can lift anything from a Ford Escape to a Navistar 4400. Only had to change the batteries once in 5 years. The batteries are standard deep cycle batteries.
These columns are mostly used in bus shops (municipal and private) some of our customers use them to lift pre-fab houses and some to lift oilfield structures (mud tanks etc). As for lifting but not engaging the tires, there is an adaptor bar that slides onto the forks for lifting on the frame allowing wheel work... or you can raise the vehicle up to the desired height and place it on commercial grade jack stands. And the lifts don't drop the vehicle if the wireless signal is lost, the load holding devices (locks) are always positively engaged and prevents sudden dropping of the load. And even if they do lose signal they just fault out, once the fault is addressed you can resume the lift.
Jay love your shop...awsome..I have a small home shop..800 sq.space..basic oversized 2 car ..I got a globe inground lift..for free..it was 5 yrs old..almost new..its case is fberglassed..so no rust to worry about or leaks..my dad helped me install it got the instructions from s.v.i.in Dekalb, il..we used heavy type copper tubing for under ground air line to casing..then added food grade vegetable oil.into it..to fill...no issues for ground ..no e.p.a. issues to deal with..still works..for me..when I use it..now and then..great video..I.like the open floor look ..old school..ty
Ive used an older version of these (not wireless) at the school I attended and they were one of the most useful items around. In answer to your question, what we did in class was use the lifts to bring it up and then drop the car on to four stands just off the ground. This made it really nice because the vehicle landed on all four of the stands at the same time and you didn't have to worry about the balancing act of bringing one end up at a time.
Great video. Right about JACKS! Been using them for years and years. We (Machineco in Montreal) bought two 2 post lifts 7000 lb each. - AND . 400,000 pounds for four is our latest acquisition! (No wife so no problem 😁) Our FOUR Macton 50 ton portable electric locomotive jacks, are also fully synchrionized. AND also made in USA ! ... and if anyone is interested. we'd rent or lease or even sell them!
@@thenewfbi I'm sure they were "free" from advertising on his channel. Most of us would never of heard of Sterlif without Jay and now some of us are going to order for our garages. I believe its a fair deal for both party', do you concur?
I worked at a company that bought like 30 of the non battery powered 230v after dealing with other brand battery powered mobile lifts. The Konis were great my favorite. We lifted city buses all day long without a single issue.
I worked on a system called synchro lift back in the 1980s. It used an army of Grove RT cranes to lift and move ships in Brazil. The numbers were mind boggeling.
Can't believe all the people commenting about how "you can't remove tires with this" This application is for HEAVY DUTY work. Not your little 4 wheelers you use to go to Wal-Mart! HEAVY DUTY as in tractors, trailers and other heavy equipment! Want to do brakes or shocks on your 4 wheeler, use a floor jack and jack stands! Damn boys, it aint hard to figure out!
We had these jacks at the FDNY repair shops. These things were invaluable to us. No you cant remove tires or do brakes, but you can do EVERYTHING else. In my opinion , they were great, when I started there we had to do everything on the floor, try removing a transmission from a fire engine on the floor, not a fun job at all especially when you had nothing but a hand pump jack to lift the truck
I changed my cv shafts on my Plymouth van using these. Just lift up the vehicle and set it on a couple of jack stands. works like a charm. They also make a crossbeam adapter to lift from the chassis. It slips on the forks of two opposing columns.
Those are great! We used them at NYC Transit for years! And you can work on wheels and tires buy placing jack stands under the vehicle, the lowering one, two or more!
A perfect retirement job for me is to work in Jay's garage keeping all the vehicles and tools shiny and clean. And making sure each stored vehicle is driven at least every week.
We have these lifts in our garage before they went wireless. They will pick up a 10 wheel rubbish packer and lift it 6 feet in the air. They also sell these super duty jack stands that you roll under the truck if you need the lift for something else.It truly is a great product, with the slide on adapters you can lift a Fiat or a Mack truck.
Looks like Jay was up all night shooting this very informative video! I lobe the stuff you feature on your blog, and have purchased several of the featured items. One of the best? The chrome polish. Keep 'em coming!
Amazing product. I can think of so many businesses that would benefit from them and save garage floor space. If I win the lottery I’m getting some too.
They are almost always used in conjunction with tall support stands so that you can lower the suspension or take the wheels off. Most heavy shops are replacing all there drive on or fixed lifts with these mobile ones. Added benefit is they dont tie up bay when you dont want to lift a vehicle.
They've upgraded these lifts, The ones we use have adjustable forks like a forklift to fit any tire. They pick up the 60 passenger luxury coaches with no problem
"As you can see we've moved my firetruck into the shop here..." To which a contestant on Jeopardy replies: "What is something that would only be said by Jay Leno?"
Those are really nice, and its not about something new all the times, they are good, useful in the right environment and 72,000 capacity is very cool. Imagine in a resto shop how useful these could be. I have seen shops where moving vehicles can be a nightmare to get to the lifts when full so.
Mobile Column Lifts aka Hyweama lifts (the 'Hoover' of mobile column lifts) have been around for eons and are used extensively in bus depots, but they have one major limitation - no work can be carried out on the axles. Also, they are dependant on a relatively flat floor otherwise they bind up. One of my clients uses them to steam clean the underside of buses before maintenance work. They get really s*****y but are still reliable.
I would like to add to my previous comment that we also purchased the Stertil-Koni stands. They are 18,000lb. capacity per stand. They are a very clever design that fold up when not in use and when in use they open up to a tripod and move around very easily on wheels that are spring loaded!! Great system!!
Love your shows..Jay..ty. Interestedly..I own a vary sm home garage..2 car like most working guys..like your lifts..u have a big shop..and budget..ok..I have a lift in my garage..it's old school type..my dad had 5 in his service station..they lasted I believe 45 yrs 19 59 to 1999 till he retired..had no issues with anything or EPA issues..I found an old school inground .single post.. a Rotary model FP46H MK VI. Has an oil tank...having it cleaned up.. sandblasted , epoxy coating and paint ..it will be aboveground..its from 1983. It's in great shape..I love the old service station look . Shop wise..for my old hot rod ,..so now I just don't have old signs and potro stuff. I have a working shop..and even a American made air compressor..by saylor-beall Corp..in st.johns Mich..all cast iron..made by UAW union workers..check out this company..my dad had the same Air compressor..as well for 45 yrs..120 gal 5 hp. Unit.it ran 5 bays and a tunnel wash..in IL..with reg maintenance it ran forever..as well great videos..Jay.
I wonder if there’s a built in safety mechanism, specifically if someone starts trying to jack up the lifts (the pallet jack part) or if they would even jack up at all with the weight of a car on them.
Ok guys for the record these are primarily a heavy duty lift. If you want to do wheel off service there are support stands and other adapters that make this very easy. There is NO risk of the lifts ever falling over as the load is over the fork which is over the base. Adjustable fork model dont need adapters for different tire sizes. Also to the guy saying they wont sell many! Think again there are literally thousands sold every month. Not for covettes but for heavy stuff.
we use these at transit for buses, 45000lbs, about 23 tons, wheel end work is easy, just lift it and drop it on 3 ft tall jackstands, not tiny car stands like Leno assumed, no adapters needed. we have wireless and corded. if I had a shop this is what I'd get, we have 16.5 to 18500 lbs posts, you add up all 4. 18.5x4 is 74000lbs.
There is an accessory called hummer adapter that attaches between two lifts to allow exactly that. It is not on the web page but you can go to the page and request info about them
the only advantage is that they are moble. I could build another garage or car for 30k with a 2 post and still work on wheels, suspension ect... still love Jay and if I had his money I'm sure I'd have a few of these.
I like the Quickjack. I have one of those. Father in law worked on RVs. Never lifted them. Drove them over a pit to work on them. Not sure these heavy duty jacks are even needed.
I work at KLM Equipment Services at Schiphol Amsterdam and I can assure you CAN get to the wheels. You just have to use different adapters to lift other then on the wheels. We have about 32/36 of these things at the shop(s) and heavier types aswell. I'm not a mechanic but a welder/fabricator but I know for a fact the mechanics just love these lifts! Only difference being that they are wired and synchronized as such too.
My wife sees these and she will try to convince me we need five of these. One extra for just in case. She has two F-250 crew cab trucks, a Chevy 1500 truck, a Chevy conversion van, a Chrysler mini van, a KIA Soul and a 1967 Barracuda Convertible. I talked her into the KIA Soul because the one F-250 gets about 10 miles per gallon because it has a V-10 engine. I showed he that the savings in gas would pay for the KIA Soul.
Dear@@elonmust7470 👍👌👏 Yeah, definitely! Although then it's only necessary to buy one of those "weaker" ones with "only" 16.500 lbs capacity. LOL Best regards luck and health.
Dear@@markdobson4505 👍👌👏 Yeah, you definitely should! But for your heavy motorcycles it isn't necessary to have those strong ones. The "weaker" models with "only" 16.500 lbs capacity will fit perfectly! LOL. Best regards luck and health.
Although extensive testing has been done to demonstrate that lifting with these lifts under only one of the two tires in a dually is perfectly safe; if you are not comfortable with that, they have extensions that will allow both tires to be picked up.
While I will concede your point that it is only ideally a 72K system, most people don't have anything near that weight to lift, and if they do, they purchase 6 lifts for another 36K capacity and lift at both duals. We lift school buses and up to 10 yard dump trucks with a set of 4 of these all day. Nothing we have gets anywhere near the load limit of these great units. If there is ever a question of whether or not you are lifting too much, the towers have individual scale readouts!
Is there some sort of interlock that keeps the palate jack from lifting while there's a vehicle on the lift? Maybe it just relies on the weight of the vehicle being greater than the capacity of the palate jack... but it seems like you'd want some sort of method to keep the wheel from engaging with the ground and causing sliding...
Nafir Alvarez I don't know about these Mobile Columns, but there are Mohawk Lift Moblie columns, that are made in New York with auto contact adapters available that lift from the body.
with this system set up like this...you don't! In a pinch you can use 2 and roll under each side and lift that way! Not designed for that but will work! Shop I worked in we would use our Hetras, which are the same thing but wired, we would lift car hauler trailers just placed under frame to do brake jobs and replace axles!
They likely sell a version of the product that can lift from points on the frame. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has been using a similar product in some of their shops for more then 30 years to lift married pairs of subway cars that weigh in at 170,000 lb.
I need a small, cheaper set for passenger cars.baI am wondering how you compensate for uneven slabs. For example if one want to do a lift in a slightly uneven parking lot or on the street in front of a residence.
I envy Jay, as do most men who know mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electronics (USAF trained, over 20+ years). Most of my equipment is made in the USA, but, purchased at salvage. Our 3,000 lb. folding crane is an ARCAN CEH-30. American made, with thick wall steel, not the light 10 gauge steel from China. This steel is a quarter inch thick, in all the legs, verticals, and crane. Bolts are grade 5, except the crane arm bolt and nut, which are Grade 8. Would love to have one of the portable electric over hydraulic lifts that lays on the ground, lifts a 2.5 ton vehicle about 2 feet. Even that is out of my hobby budget...
Patrick Patrick I pardon your xenophobic remarks to ask a question. What the hell do these cost? I'm assuming its astronoical. Like, what a random piece of equipment to plug on his channel. I bet they sell literally none from this video advert. Yea I need 8 water-proof, wireless, portable, military grade 32 ton lifts to change the tranny in my car....
+RA30st08 Don't be ridiculous. This is a product targeted specifically to professional and governmental auto repair shops, as well as wealthy car collectors, not the average joe who just needs to replace his tranny. I would also add that there are professionals who watch this show, who both need, and can afford, such products.
HeartlandRanchTV As a student I worked in MANY garages. These will NEVER be used in busy automotive garages. There's multiple options available and there has been for literally decades, that do the job perfectly and for a fraction of the cost - what do these add? Lifting HUGE weight, being mobile (on a super flat surface) and waterproof.....beyond the military and some truck mechanics, this is useless for the cost. This is so fucking bespoke and limited in it's cost to usefulness ratio that it will stop being produced, I guarantee it!
darkjedi351 I think you've missed what I thought was an obvious point. This video was an advertisement. >99.9% of viewers will never buy these. I would call that extremely poor advertisement management!! You've get more business trying to sell a condom machine to the Vatican.
This was very fun and interesting to watch... Its not for the average person, but if you do have a huge garage, which many people besides us poor folk do, this would be useful...
Plus if you have heat in the floor its risky to anchor a lift without hitting a line or having a line in an inconvient place dictating the placement of the lift post but how do you take the tire off to do brakes or suspension work !??!! Jack stands available?
How is the mic so low? The ads are 2-3x as loud. Cant hear anything, then you need to crank your volume. Then the ads kill the sound. HOW? Basic editing...
8:39 looks at roof clearance, and again at 8:43. Bead of sweat rolls off his head as he says that's good at 8:45 haha. That is a man that loves his toys! I am a man that is jealous of his toys. :) Love the vids Jay!
No, uneven weight distribution does not even out through the frame. Torque dictates that it's distributed unevenly according to the distance from center of mass. If the force were not distributed this way then there'd be a net torque on the vehicle, which there obviously isn't since it's staying level.
Put the vehicle on support stands and remove wheel. They offer support stands up to 80". Also if your removing entire rear end you can use these in pairs and lower the whole rear axle on wheels while the front is still on lifts.
