Been a “happy” HAM since 1989, have had a 2M/UHF mag mount antenna stuck to a large cookie sheet in my attic for about 24 years. Cookie sheet ground planes are very underrated. They get the job done

Nice comparison! I was very happy to see you release this video about antennas. Radios are fun, but this gear matters too! Seeing as you're my soul source for GMRS information, I appreciate any wisdom you're willing to bestow upon me. I'd love to see some theory based videos, or maybe just sprinkled in a bit. What's up with antenna gain? Why are ground planes important, and why do some antennas not need them? Don't forget the big one, what's the difference between narrow band and wide band?! :D

I run one of those when I'm 'wheeling at Rausch Creek or AOAA in PA and they're just fine for short-range comms. I'll be up with 7 or 8 other rigs in a tight convoy and even on 5W it's never been a problem. Their SWR issues are known, however, so keep transmissions as short...and to the point...as possible.

I have that exact same ground plane. I used it for testing swr on a couple el-cheapo antennas. (Affiliate link below) The Midland was probably due to the long, thin cable. 6” is 1/4 wave, so advertised gain is likely exaggerated. As always, I like your videos. Your dry sense of humor is great.

I have the Midlan 3db (daily driving) and 6db (for trail use) for the ZJ; Midland 6db for the TJ. Both work well with the MXT115 in both Jeeps. ZJ has a better ground plain vs the TJ; but its a TJ so who cares. Both are able to hit the Crestline-575 Repeater from the HD and talk with people in the IE. Love that they are attach and ready to go without the need to tune.

I have the 6db midland antenna and it works very well. I also have a stubby baofeng that doesn't work as well. The only complaint I have about the midland is on top of my FJ it is over 8'6" so it hits the brush bar at drive throughs. I drove into a parking garage the other day and it made an epic noise smashing against the ribs of the celling. I had to pull over and some airport police were a little to interested in me.

I would love to see a similar comparison of the various antennas offered for the handheld GMRS radios, Specifically I am curious how the 1/2 wave Nagoya 771g compares to the 5/8 wave Smiley slim duck - Smiley claims to have higher gain, but the Nagoya 1/2 wave is phisically longer and should not need a ground plane like a 5/8 wave antenna does which might benefit it on a handheld which does not provide the best ground plane.

No loads No thrills -- just the typical P71 base and stinger cut to 12.143" in. 462.5Mhz. maybe it's me ....but it works great for the police depts - notice no police cruiser have NO loads on their ant's, And we use repeaters like they do? May not be great for simplex of course but just asking your thoughts. Maybe need a vid on that one?? Or direct me to one? KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK HERE !!!!

I have the Midland Ghost 3b gain, and the Midland MXTA26 and was wondering if this needs a ground plane as I see they also have hood mount options or the MXTA23 Roll bar mount. Thank You so much for this video about your distance test! Even though it was very light on information regarding distance testing, I found it quite interesting. One thing that I have always wondered about distance testing is how is a GRMS HT really only able to transit 5 to 10 FARS, yet is able to transmit to a repeater that is 30 - 50 FARS? I understand the mountaintop line of sight angle that brings the signal above the terrain, but duplicating the line of site from hilltop to hilltop results in less FARS. Do repeater antennas have more sensitivity or what? Keep up the challenging work, we appreciate you out here!
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon Год назад
A good repeater will have a MUCH larger and more sensitive antenna and a more sensitive receiver than most hand-held radios, so it will hear signals from much much more fars than a small handheld or mobile radio.
