Good job Chris! I like a nice, simple clean install. Now in my 60's I can relate to the grunting and groaning part...lol! I bought an entire set of the MFJ Hamsticks, later to find out the set screws can be a problem. As suggested by others, I plan to go to the hardware store and buy all new stainless steel set screws to replace the soft ones. Thanks for showing us your install. It's always helpful to see others experiences in HAM radio adventures. 73!

Why not mount the antennas in the corners of the bed near the cab it self. Least that way you will have less antenna cable you will have to run.

Good video. I looked for Part 2 and didn’t see it on your channel. [EDIT: I did find the part 2, RU-vid didn’t see it in your channel, but no need answering about part2)]. I was wondering how the bonding affected the antenna tuning. Also, I have a 2016 Chevy pickup and was wondering about putting those type of antennas toward the front of the box instead of the back. Is there an RF reason for the placement or just a convenient place for mounting? Thanks again, 73 de KI5HXM Brent

curious why mounted so low on that spot instead on the higher side of the rear tail lights
@k2cjbradio

That was the only place the brackets would fit. The other spots weren’t flat. I do believe the body of the bed is interacting with the antennas. But, they do work. I have made many contacts with them.

I lucked out and found a left and right CB antenna mount on Quadratec where I got my lift kit for my 01 Jeep Cherokee. I think I am going to copy you on the 20 and 40 meter Shark sticks. I will have to take a look at those 3/8" stud mounts you bought from Firestix. You used RG8X? How about the antenna switch?
@k2cjbradio
@k2cjbradio 4 года назад
1crazynordlander Yes I used RG8x throughout. The antenna switch is an old one that I had. The original one was for 2 antennas. I changed it out for a 3 position switch so I could run a cable for when I use the Wolf River Coil antenna outside the truck.

Would you expand on shunting? I used to run sharks on a magmount.. Never heard of using shunts in that process Thanks
@k2cjbradio
@k2cjbradio 12 дней назад
The way I understand it the shunt coil routes to ground any static build up on the whip that occurs when the antenna is moving. What i learned is that the coil also improves SWR.

Thanks for the video Chris, nice looking installs! I'm in the 2nd month of trying to determine best antenna setup and install in my Jeep and just came across your video as I am looking at mounts. I have my radios and antennas decided on. Yaesu 2m/70cm, TYT 1.25 radio duplexer and tri band antenna with Yaesu 891 running an Alpha MOTO FMJ or Yaesu ATAS. Could you not install it above the rear lights and wouldn't that help with the tuning a little bit? I just see so many mobile HF installs down low or on bumpers and I thought that would cause a less efficient antenna. Is it simply for ceiling clearance? Watching part 2 next! Thank you! 73 Paul

@k2cjbradio 4 года назад
Paul K5VOP JI1BGC Hey Paul! So glad they are helping! The mount location was based on the shape of the metal on the body of the truck. The place I put them was the only real flat spot available. The antenna switch arrangement works fine, but I’d love to be able to tweak the tuning of the 40M antenna to get more use out of it . What I didn’t show on the video was when I added a shunt coil to the base of the 40M antenna. It helps a little bit for opening up the usable bandwidth.

Have you had troubles with the whip end coming loose? When I travel with the antenna installed, the top nut starts loosening. I'm afraid I'll lose it. I've thought about a drip of Loc-Tite but haven't tried it yet.
@k2cjbradio
@k2cjbradio 3 года назад
Actually I’ve had problems with the 40m antenna coming loose at the base. Strange how it’s only the 40m. The 20m antenna stays tight but I need to snug the 40m with a pair of pliers.

@@k2cjbradio Mine stay tight at the base.. so far.. it's just the removable top section that jiggles loose. I don't usually do any driving with the whip installed on the roof of my truck due to height..

I bought the same two antennas. What did you end up with for a length on each antenna. I don't have an analyzer (next purchase) There is a tiny piece of instructions in the package on the length of the silver whip out of the ferrule for a starting point. I was wondering if you have to cut off the excess whip that extends down into the fiberglass section.
@k2cjbradio
@k2cjbradio 4 года назад
1crazynordlander Great! I did have to adjust them. The final length of each one didn’t match the chart they include. It does take some tweaking to get them in tune. Do you have a way to measure SWR? You’ll definitely need it.
@1crazynordlander
@1crazynordlander 4 года назад
@@k2cjbradio I do have the IC-7100 that will measure it and I have the NANOVNA that I can use. I have my eyes on the RigExpert AA-55 but that is far in the future after this last purchase. Do you have to cut the antenna that extends down into the fiberglass portion? I did make a contact with a ham in Oregon from my home in Minnesota.
@k2cjbradio
@k2cjbradio 4 года назад
1crazynordlander You also asked if I had to trim the whips. I did not. Also, I do believe the antennas in my case ended up shorter than the instructions. The 40m whip is the one that is very touchy to adjust. Move it in very small increments (1/4” or so) .

@firemarshal17
@firemarshal17 3 года назад
I’m somewhat confused on your bonding method. Are you in effect grounding to the frame? I’m under the impression that your electronics are grounded to the frame for dc grounding and the antenna should be grounded to the body for RV grounding. So why are you attaching your ribbon wire to the frame? Thanks in advance.
@k2cjbradio
@k2cjbradio 3 года назад
@@firemarshal17 From what I understand the DC ground of the frame isn’t necessarily an effective RF ground. So bonding hood to body and body to frame provides a good RF ground.

@@firemarshal17 I just made 1 for the 40m antenna. I used a T connector and soldered the coil onto a chassis mount SO239 which is connected to the middle of the T connector
