In this video I discuss whether or not a mobile hotspot is a viable option for home internet. Using NetBuddy and a Netgear Nighthawk MR1100 Router, we will run a speed test on the service and review my first few days using the service.
As a gamer, a streamer, a cord cutter, my local internet provider has gotten out of hand as far as charges go. Over the last few months, I've researched tons of alternative options to my service provider, Suddenlink. It took a long time to discover this service, NetBuddy, but I think it will be worth your time to review my experience with it.
More videos will be on the way in the near future. I love to review products and give a real-world opinion on them. No bs, no 30 minute episodes... just straight to the point so you can get on with your day. Thanks for watching, and please SUBSCRIBE if you found this content helpful.

If anyone can't get into the netbuddy program, just letting you guys know another company called OTR mobile does the same exact thing and is usually always accepting new customers. I use OTR because samething happened to me when I tried netbuddy.

I'm pinning this comment so others can see. Apparently Netbuddy's service exploded with popularity. It's hard to get a spot right now.
@Camelotsmoon
@Camelotsmoon 4 года назад
@@nunyabizness7632 It's pretty good, some days it's a little slow, but I'm in Orlando now (not where I originally got the service for) where just about every carrier is overloaded with users. It'll basically be as good as normal ATT service in your area. I was living in the Everglades (that's why I got it, because no internet and ATT has a monopoly on the area) and over there it was fantastic; not fiber or anything, but it got the job done great (could watch 1080p 60fps video and play games with no interruptions); entirely unlimited too, think the most I ever used was like 250gigs for $60 in one month. I could also text (just not sending MMS, but SMS worked) and call through it which was interesting. The only downside I would say is the customer service, because their hours are really short, the website is a little wonky and I did have a little trouble setting it up, so just be warned about that. Once it starts working though it's a good deal and I haven't had trouble since.

I have the service too. A Chinese $18 amplified mimo double wire antenna aimed at the tower angle brings my speed up from 25-40 download to 30-70 mps depending on if kids are out of school or asleep on the one small local tower. Have to aim the flat antenna part at the cell tower.

Last week we did the same but with a Verizon Prepaid Unlimited account. - Unlimited, no throttling - $65 a month with auto-pay - Recent speed test Ping: 56ms, Download: 24.63 Mbps, Upload 6.51 Mbps, have seen download 35 Mbps The big benefit for is that we RV a lot and can take it with us. We are very happy and have not experienced any buffering or slow loading web pages. To get this from Verizon you must call and ask to be transferred to the Prepaid department.

I tried to get that from Verizon 2-3 weeks ago and since I live in a very rural area they would sign me up. Woman at Verizon said they lost their leases (or failed to re-lease them) on towers in rural areas. No one can get a phone line from Verizon either in southeast Oklahoma. If you all ready had them you can keep them. I was wondering how their coverage is away from populated areas?

With Verizon, I wouldn't count on them always having "unlimited" data as they've offered it, taken it away, and then offered it again! It's only amount of time before they'll be taking that plan away once more! BTW, Junk Yard, I grew up in Oklahoma city but now live in California. Oklahoma is about 20 years behind everyone else! Hell, you guys don't even have a Costco in Oklahoma! It's really sad there! My mom just discovered RU-vid on her new iPhone about a month ago! So yeah, you people definitely got some catching up to do!

Your comment seems to hit close to home....I live somewhere that the BIG services providers wont go.....tries using my internet on my phone....thru at&t and like he said after 22g you get throttled HARD. Here I am in the 21rst century finding it almost impossible to find home internet. I heard about netbuddy awhile ago and opted to go to Verizon (I already had a hotspot and Verizon came out with a "unlimited" plan....tried that....and throttle city) I am only left with satellite....which I cannot use for what I need. Looking into buying net buddy this week, sick of no internet.

I have been using NetBuddy for several months now because my Internet options are limited. The speed is decent at ~25Mbps with 4 bar 80% signal from an outdoor Yeacomm P11 router mounted on a 6ft PVC pipe on the roof. (An outdoor antenna connected to a Netgear LB1120 did not provide a good enough signal to noise ratio to allow speeds any greater than 8Mbps.) Unfortunately, I only have one cell tower 8 miles away. So, I get slowdowns between 6-9pm; making game play or movie streaming very difficult. I would say that having multiple towers within 3 miles is highly recommended.
@cynicalmikey8769

you can sign up for prepaid ATT tablet data plan for $35/month. It’s 4g LTE same service as any standard ATT customer would get. The trick is that you need 3 things to make it work: an IMEI # from an iPad to plug in as you’re signing up (You can find them Online if you don’t have one already), an ATT SIM card (you can buy one on amazon for $6), and a mobile hotspot (i bought a zte velocity on amazon new for $50). This netbuddy stuff and anyone else selling any service that costs more than $35/month is ripping you off. The data limit is set at 22gb/month before throttling but I’m 3 days into my first month and have used over 40 gb already and haven’t had any slow down or disruption of service. I saw another guy who had used 289gb with a week left in his month befor he finally got throttled. And it was a severe throttling, down to essentially 256kb Internet, which is useless. But you can use a lot of data before throttling. It’s an awesome deal. Some people get super expensive nighthawk routers that are like $300 but I still haven’t seen anyone getting exceptionally better speeds with them over my cheapo $50 hotspot. If anyone does I’d be happy to hear about it. But until then the cheap one works just fine for me. I average like 28mbps dl and 17 mbps Up.

If you're looking to try this service out, please note that there are specific ordering times listed on their website that are subject to change. Right now, Sun-Tues, 6-9pm is the only ordering window. If you try to order any other time, it will show OUT OF STOCK. They don't always have the routers and sim cards available, but you can see their recommendations right there on the website for which products to buy. It actually makes the set up process faster as you're not waiting for shipping. The remote service activation is ALWAYS available during the ordering window, whereas they don't always have the devices.

The speed tests don’t seem to change much regardless of how many GB I use per month and I average around 200GB. If you’re interested in what the future holds for high speed open networks then you should check out the initiatives to create an open 5G mesh network. If you find one that interests you consider contributing to their crowd funding campaigns. Perhaps we will have a better alternative to big business Internet in the not too distant future.

Try signing out of everything. Then go to the playstation website on your home computer (while connected to your 4G LTE). From your home computer, sign in to your account. Then go back to your ps4 and sign in. This should fix the issue. My ps4 would read the internet and "connect" to it, but there was no actual connectivity. Somehow signing in to my account online on a computer "linked" my internet to the account? I don't know how it works, but it worked for me. Took about 4 days to figure this out.

I have NetGear Nighthawk hotspot and I am using the $29.99 AT&T prepaid plan registered as "ipad". It is unlimited I hit over 600gbs a month and haven't been throttled or noticeably slowed down been using it for about 5 months and last 3 as my primary internet. Speed in my rural area eastern TN is pretty good getting consistent 40 down and 7-8 up. I recommend checking ebay there are several guys that will set it up for you at minimal cost. I bought mine from a seller called attunlimited which I can't recommend enough.

This is definitely some slow internet, I pay $80 a month, but I'm getting 250mb download and 50mb upload. This would be great for on the go, on vacations/trips, as long as its pay as you go/you can cancel and start the service, when you need it. Honestly I wouldn't pay over $40, for the speeds your getting, and for $40 a month, you should be getting 30mb down, not 17, and your paying $60, honestly I think your over paying, but if you can bring it, where ever you want, it might be worth it, maybe. Honestly you should be paying a dollar a megabyte, so for 17mb, you should pay $17, now days you can get 30down, $30, like I said, I'm paying $80, but I'm 250mb down or above. Anyway you can say/justify, your price, because of the portability aspect of it. Also its annoying, but once the promotional time period ends/when they up your internet price again, you can call in, for a promotion again, I may have been lucky, I called back in for the promotion price, once, and after that I haven't had to do that. Also 17mb, is actually about 2MB, meaning 8 small mbs= 1 big MB, meaning big MBs are whats on your hardrives/SSDs and so on. 250 small mbs, is actually 32 big MBs/what your hardrive goes by, anyway just another thing to keep in mind. Also a few other things to keep in mind, with direct tv, AT&T, has no internet data caps, also fiber, has no internet data caps, also fiber is $80 a month, the issue you may have though, is fiber, might not be available, in your area, Fibers not available where I am, well I get fiber, but its not exactly the same thing, a line is ran, to my house, from a fiber location, so I only get 250mb down, where as true fiber speeds are 1000mb down and a 1000mb up, which is 125 large MBs/ 125 hardrive MBs. Thats another good point, although, some of this, can't be tested, with this type internet, 5ghz, is good, for close range, to get higher speeds, through WiFi, 2.4ghz, is good for longer range, with lower speeds, an eithernet connection/wired conection, which isn't available with this setup, is where you will see much faster speeds, without having to buy a real highend, router, the router I use is a Netgear, Night Hawk router, which is capable of producing 350mb a second, through wifi.
@cynicalmikey8769
@cynicalmikey8769 5 лет назад
@@pspvita99 you have some very valid points, all of which I agree with. However, it doesn't sound like you live in an area where supply is a concern. The area I live in only has one cable internet provider, and despite paying for speeds of 100mbps+, signal strength and connectivity is also an issue in this area, only netting actually speeds roughly 15-30% of claimed speeds provided. This device would also be great in areas where there is no internet, and hotspots are the only option. I've seen off-the-grid homeowners advertised targeted hotspot services for literally hundreds of dollars a month for speeds less than 4mbps. Search the web, it's out there. And it's horrible to treat consumers like that!
