This is a video of my Yaesu FT-857D and ATAS-120A installed on a 2006 New Beetle TDI. It's purpose is to show you some of the capabilities of the Yaesu FT-857D and ATAS-120A Active Tuning Antenna System also made by Yaesu. I have installed the radio using the Separation Kit from Yaesu for FT-857D and it has been working like no other. I am so pleased with this system that I may get a second set for field operations such as portable or during when I am hiking. If you have any question about my setup, or if you're having problem with the ATAS, drop me a note, and I will do my best to give you some pointers. I spent many weeks perfecting the installation and right now, I have zero issues with ATAS.
There are lots of information out there on the Internet but the important ones I found by experimenting. If you're on the fence about this setup, don't because it works really well. RF grounding braids are very important - I think they are the most important than any other types of grouding for the ATAS. Fortunately, I have a unibody vehicle which makes grouding a bit easier. However, if you have a body on frame vehicle like SUV or pickup truck, I would really ground multiple points underneath the vehicle.

@GunFanactic Control head is mounted on a bracket that's part of the Separation Kit. Separation bracket is mounted on a alumnum bracket that's been cut from a longer "L" shape piece bought from a hardware store. Basically, the separation kit comes with small nuts and bolts which I used to mount the plastic bracket onto the aluminum by drilling two holes. Then the control head slides onto that bracket. Hope that answers your question.

You really really helped me. I had trouble tuning on some bands. Everyone was telling me it must be the ground. I did not know about the service menu values. I changed them according to your info and it works beautiful now. Can't thank you enough. I was pulling my hair out. 73

Thank you for the comment Phil. When I had issue with ATAS, I scoured the Internet for answers as well as calling Yaesu numerous times without a real good answer. I was able to address my issue therefore thought I share it with our HAM community. Pete KC2ZXL

I use a ATAS-120A which is made by Yaesu (Vertex Standards); have been pretty much trouble-free for the last two years. Lately, I have been having issue with picking up alternator noise due to corrosion on the Diamond mount which was resolved by adding a short 1" grounding braid from the base of the mount onto the set screws (behind the rear of the bracket).

hi mike,the reason your display is saying init, is becouse you have just told it in the menu that you have a antenna and you want it to tune all hf and 50hhz, so when you first push tune the antenna goes all the way to the top then to the bottom and after that the radio will bleep and you can push tune once more and from then on it should tune to every band, hope this helps mate,

Peter, Thank you for this video. I am ready to order the set up similar to yours. I have a mini cooper and I THINK my antenna set up will be similar to yours. I have a hatchback like your beetle. I had planned to use the ATAS 120. What kind of duplexer did you use? And did you need to tie your hatchback to the car boy using ground webbing? Any advice you can give me now that you have had this setup for a while (5 years??) Did you have to order the separation kit separately?

Do you use a plastic washer between the antenna and bracket?

Hi Peter, can you elaborate on that duplexer pls? I have the same rig and ATAS 120 for my Tacoma truck. Does the duplexer allow you to tx/rx 2m/440 on the ATAS or do you need another antenna? I am also having some issues with grounding. I've used a couple of those grounding straps you show on my hood. Where else should I apply them? I am mounting the ATAS on the left rear tail light with a custom steel bracket that comes out between the tail gate and the stop light. Recommendations are welcome. Thanks!!

This video is incredibly helpful. Will this radio Tune to another antenna like an external Auto Tuner does? Anyone? Thank you!
@ruybermejo

No, auto tuner only w/ATAS, with othres screwdriver antennas you neer an antenna matcher, like MFJ-910 or manually. :/

Sir, respectfully, what you have is a very expensive amateur radio, hooked up to a very expensive screwdriver-type antenna. The radio's antenna can go up, or down, from the radio because that YASEU ATAS antenna was made especially for the YASEU FT-857D. So what? I can still hear alot of noise coming in thru your radio, even after you were playing with the antenna by use of your radio. What you should've done was to "cutoff" the background noise with your squelch rotary dial. Don't feel too bad ---> I've got the same YASEU FT-857D. I am waiting for a different antenna system with a TRAM unit. I surely hope I didn't go "off the reservation" too much in purchasing that YAESU. Friends have advised me that I would have been lightyears ahead with an ICOM with D-STAR programming. I'll have to wait and see. My $1,000.00 + radio is pristine new, but if I can't make it work properly, I will have to sell it as "used"! What an extremely expensive lesson to learn the hard way!
