We did NMO mounts in 9 of our trucks. We found that by using a star washer under the NMO mount, before the brass teeth of the NMO, where it meets the inside of the cab to get a bite through the zinc coating and through the paint gave us a more solid ground. We were experiencing tons of static, assuming ground loop noise was the culprit. Granted, now all our trucks are also tinned copper braid strapped to death. Cab to bed, bed to frame, cab to frame, both hood hinges and other places are bonded. No doubt we are using every last horizontal surface to provide us with a larger ground plane. Truly gave us optimal performance we actually noticed in areas where usually we had trouble. Sometimes the brass teeth on the NMO mounts don't quite get through the paint. At least not the Laird MB8X, RG8X coax assembly from Antennex, or Arcadia. We opted out of, and completely removed all of our original RG58/u and RG58-A/U assemblies completely. Theyre in the trash. We found those were susceptible to noise. A solid copper core coax was ideal, for us at least. Not the easiest to fish because its much stiffer than a braided center, but seeing as we were only going from dead center of our F150s, 4 door, rooftops down the middle pillar to center consoles. It wasn't that tough. It's when we had our old coax assemblies running down the front pillars that were the pain and crossing through noisy areas just above the fuse block passenger side kick plate... The fun part was taking out 9 old coax assemblies to re-install the MB8X RG8x Laird coax assemblies. All is quiet and much better. But thats just us. ALSO HOT TIP:: we were told by an Antennex/laird tech to put a very small dot of Dielectric grease on the center tip of the NMO where the center core of the antenna meets the small center in the middle of NMO mount. We never knew this was even necessary and it's not, he says, but we work ay 9000 ft in the rockies and snow just sets on our roofs daily and for hours. He says what it does is keeps moisture from getting between that connection, the ground part, not a big deal. Honestly, if its sealed like I assume it should be, we felt that was a but redundant but hey, ya never know. We did it anyway with dielectric grease leftovers from our grounding/bonding fiasco. Bu radios for us are CRITCAL. When youre at 9,000 ft, and blowing 70 mph at -17 getting caught out there at 6 am all alone and having to walk for help with no comms can kill ya. We went with radios after an incident that nearly took a man's life. He thought for sure he was a goner. Whilst walking, in a rural mountain area with zero traffic he was actually making peace with god with every step. Lukcily! A sheriff was patrolling at that time, had he not, we would have lost that man. Hes now our Foreman and sits in dispatch, we love that guy.

This is one of the most informative videos I've seen yet on NMO mounting in a vehicle. I've seen so many other install videos where no one has touched on there being a specific drill bit for an NMO mount, a plug to cover it up if it's removed and a cap to cover it for car washes and such.Very good info to have, thank you.
@4313Ap
@4313Ap 5 лет назад
Good video, couple of things, first, don't rock the drill bit, that's a good way to get an oval hole, (I'm an ex aircraft structural mechanic) I've drilled hundreds of thousands of holes, and yes, the tape is a good idea... Second, always check the underlying structure first, you got lucky with being able to Dremel... I generally take the coax down the pillar to the rear of the door, then either forward along the threshold, or cross at the back of the seat under the carpet and then forward, it helps sometimes preventing rfi from other car systems, also try not to run the power parallel to car harness in close proximity, and leave enough in a coil to install a choke near the radio. Lastly, why even go through the trouble of removing an NMO mount when you sell a vehicle? Take the antenna, install the rain cap yes, just tuck the cabling back out of the way as much as possible...

Everything said here is what I was going to mention. Never rock the drill. Its not going to bind in thin sheet metal which is why people do that (prevent binding). Nice vid and thanks for sharing. my nmo mounts are different than yours. Idk but the ones I have are motorola brand and the inner part you were holding with the needle noise is what screws down on mine. The rubber o ring in under neath that.

1. Drill a 3/4" hole in the vehicle with antenna hole cutting saw, Motorola part # RPX-4378A, and remove all burrs. The antenna hole saw will remove paint in a narrow ring around hole to assure good metal contact between vehicle and mount.
@jakepyra1432
@jakepyra1432 7 лет назад
You took the time to remove the trim on the A pillar and such, take a few more minutes and pull the headliner down to see where the cross braces are. You got off easily, sometimes, when you drill into them, you can't fish a cable through. Also, as other folks have said, try to refrain from brushing the metal shavings across the roof. A vacuum or even a magnet wrap in a piece of cloth works.

+Commsprepper The UHF/SO239 kind of antenna base is common (it's what I use), but there is also a rather unique antenna base that seems to be specific to Australia. No one really knows where it came from, I guess this is what happens when industries develop in isolation from other countries. The actual antenna mount is a 5/16" 26TPI thread. There are many different local manufacturers that use this "standard". There are also many different kinds of base that use this thread... from through roof to elevated feed. Search for '5/16" antenna base' for pictures. Search for 'AE4018' to see an elevated feed antenna base.

It is grounded. That's how the NMO is designed.
@TheMototyme
@TheMototyme 3 года назад
@@Commsprepper The underside is coated with paint at the factory and does not provide a good ground source. It is best to use the antenna drill bit which will scrape the paint from the top and provide a good ground connection. Although there might be a ground connection on the underside via tightening the mount and forcing the mount to be snug against the painted surface on the underside, in many cases it is not a good ground source.

What is the benefit of the NMO mount over my mag mount I have? I've been thinking of getting the NMO but not sure. I also noticed you put your dual band antenna closer to the front of the cab. Is there benefit to that? I currently have my mag mount towards the back by the cargo light. Thanks for the great videos.
@Commsprepper
@Commsprepper 8 лет назад
+Timothy Rust The NMO mount gives you a direct electrical connection to the ground-plane (roof) and a weather-tight installation. Typically with mag mounts, you have to run the cable through a window or door jam. With an NMO mount - the antenna becomes part of the vehicle. There is no benefit gained from having one antenna in front of the other. However, I was seeking to have as much separation between each antenna while shooting for a decent equal amount of metal around each antenna (ground-plane) and keeping the antennas perpendicular to car by avoiding the curves as each end of the roof. As with all things radio - everything is a compromise. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@joey_556
@joey_556 5 лет назад
I prefer NMO for a few reasons. 1 it's a cleaner look no cable showing that could possibly be cut due to vandalism. 2 it won't get knocked around or over from and type of blunt force which could also scratch the surface of the vehicle. 3rd a magnet mount usually uses adhesive to hold everything together which with weather and tempature could possibly wear the adhesive and cause the magnet and antenna to separate and possibly get damaged. Those are more of the benefits of a NMO antenna mount.
@davidm1635
@davidm1635 5 лет назад
A mag mount antenna will scratch your paint, scratch enough and you will get rust under/around it. Also, shielding the paint underneath will be visible the longer it's on the vehicle if you later remove the mag mnt ant. I have used mag mounts, convenience was the main reason, but after I struck a small tree limb and the mag mount scratched my roof I wished I had drilled a hole!

I found out Harbor Freight makes a unibit that goes from 1/8 to 3/4 inch and deburrs- it has a apex shank so and cordless drive works.Stuff a roll of duct tape between the roof and headliner so you dont drill into the headliner.
@Commsprepper
@Commsprepper 6 лет назад
How about depth control? Key is not drilling the head liner.
@TheMototyme
@TheMototyme 3 года назад
With a unibit it will not remove the paint on top which will not provide a good ground. The antenna drill bit has a special lip that controls depth and scraps the paint off. The underside of the cab has paint and the quality of a ground connection under there is questionable at best. The underside is dipped at the factory.

Great video, only thing I have a question about is about not wanting to remove paint. Wouldn't you want some exposed sheet metal around the hole to prove a good ground? just curious. as always thank you for all videos
@Commsprepper
@Commsprepper 8 лет назад
+Cruiser2B Good question - the ground connection is made on the underside of the mount. Hitting the paint changed the level around the mount and creates the potential of a leak/rust point. I don't think I went too deep but will keep an eye on for the next year. Every few years it's a good idea to remove the antenna and pack some silicone grease under edge of the mount.
@TheMototyme
@TheMototyme 3 года назад
@@Commsprepper Actually the underside part of the mount makes contact with paint as the vehicles are dipped at the factory and it is best practice to allow the antenna drill to remove the paint for good ground connection and to provide a ground plane. Notice on the antenna drill bit the bit has special groves cut just for scraping the paint. Just don't overdo the paint scrape otherwise it can make the sheet metal thin. You should not have any leaking issues if assembled correctly. Also, using dielectric grease would be the preferred rubber o-ring and thread lubricant for an antenna installation. In higher frequency antenna installations you do need to limit the dielectric grease to a minimum. Do not use silicone or vaseline for antenna installations.

I assume my roof will be fairly similar to yours, with cross-bracing that I'd like to avoid if at all possible, so I don't end up having to Dremel out a notch or worse so the NMO mounts fits properly. I've tried using a big magnet on the headliner, but I can't seem to find any metal that way. Can you give me some measurements relative to the roof ribs that run from about halfway back on the roof back to the third brakelight. Any other tips that might make it possible for me to drill it right the first time? BTW, at this point I'm only drilling one hole, hopefully somewhere near the "RF center" of the roof. Thanks! Mike

Patching these holes are also easy to do, and if you can't, there is always a welding pro nearby that can. I usually get a piece of sheet metal from Lowes/Home Depot (if I don't have a spare). I cut out a square big enough to cover the hole. If it isn't a flat surface where the hole is, the next step is to shape it with a hammer. Then I use aviation snips to cut as close of a match as I can. If it's a 3/4" hole, it's pretty easy to just use a hole saw to get the right shape. I use a magnet to hold it into place (part of the magnet on the vehicle, the other part on the new piece). Once it's all lined up, it's just a series of tacking it with a mig. And finish up with a die-grinder and 40 grit. In less than an hour, no more hole. Primer, touch up paint, a dabs of clear coat and wet sanding...it's impossible to tell it was ever there. If you don't have a mig, a shop will typically get you past the welding part for $50-100; and then it's just the paint part you have left. And for any tiny (pin size) holes, I typically just fill them with lead and sand it down flush. Easy.

Of course I use mag and trunk/lip mounts only, I just don't like to drill holes. Just in case you don't get a good seal or it loses it seal. KA9WLU Nice installation though.

Actually, professional installers use the antenna drill bit which also scraps the paint off for a metal-to-metal antenna ground connection. The underside is painted. The antenna ground is very important for optimum antenna performance.

welcome. i live on the coast, so being near the salt water the rust attacks these bare areas very very quickly. impressive but scarey :)
@TheMototyme
@TheMototyme 3 года назад
The bare metal provides the necessary antenna ground connection. Normally being by the ocean does not affect these holes much if installed correctly. Do not use paint to cover the bare metal. If in doubt, you could run a small bead of silicone around the external part of the antenna base and the metal {roof} of the vehicle. Do not use silicone inside the antenna assembly. The antenna connection mounting nut and o-ring should use dielectric grease. With that said, I have seen older installations with corrosion on the mounting nut and antenna base mounting bolt. Checking this regularly and cleaning as needed would help minimize corrosion and rust.
