I never watched the original gundam, but your analysis made me appreciate how deep the show really is, especially within the context of the time it was aired. This also made me understand why some people put this show on a pedestal as one of the greatest anime. Will you review the other show in the franchise?
A lot of Mecha series pretty much owes it's existence to this series and Char Clones pretty much exist in many anime not just in other/AU Gundam shows.
Classy, on point review. Would be interesting to see you review a manga like Homunculus, Billy Bat or something like Choukakou which doesn't have a single review even though it's incredible.
I still think the original Gundam is one of the best pieces of pop culture media Japan has ever produced, and is a major, if not the major reason, Japanese pop culture is a major player in the world today. It was one of the first original anime to gain a large adult following. Countless creators were inspired to become creators by it. Countless people became engineers due to Gundam. Even to this day the story holds up wonderfully. There are so many themes touched upon and explored in sensible and realistic manner. Its characters to this day are iconic and Char is an absolute legend of a character. Even in a head-to-head comparision between Star Wars and Gundam Star Wars comes off as hopelessly simplistic and juvenile. Gundam shows scenes like competency not immediately translating into leadership ability with Mirai struggling to take over for Bright. Gundam shows what it feels like to become estranged from your parents due to growing up in completely different circumstances. It has interesting and unexpected character development like Amuro estranging himself from Fraw Bow due to his rising esteem and responsibilites. It has a tragic and interesting Romance in Lalah and Char. Kai and Miharu's story were excellently directed. Yeah, everybody knows that the original Gundam was not the first serious anime or the first one with mature themes, but it executed so many different ones so wonderfully, with good art, good direction, iconic voice acting, iconic art. To this day I still think Gundam is hopelessly underrated in the West and it's insane to see that for a long time even some of the mediocre OVAs like Stardust Memory were more popular here
Great analysis as always man!! Gundam is definitely one of a kind, a special piece of work. Please catch up with VAGABOND and BERSERK, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Keep up the awesome work!!
I'm not far in yet, but I think that you're mentioning SHONEN writing is very important. But "Seinen" wasn't much of a thing in animation in the 70's, you'd only really get more complicated drama like that in Gundam though shoujo stuff at the time like Rose of Versailes, which is obviously also very political. It's not very well known in the Western fandom, but going by multiple interviews with Tomino, while the original Gundam was airing, the fanbase was almost entirely young women. They visited the voice cast after recordings and made the first fan zines (and thus the foundation of otaku-dom). Boys largely only jumped on when the model kits and movie trilogy were released. It's similar to the large female fanbases for Wing and Seed we saw later. But basically SHOUJO and shounen is more of the line that Gundam staddles, not seinien. Though I do think it is very important to go into Gundam knowing it was revolutionary, that stuff like the character development, the "anybody can die" stakes, and sympathetic villains were not common at the time, and it was stuff pushed into your monster (well, zeon mobile suit) of the week toy commercial formula in order to turn into a genuine work of sci fi.
Tomino single-handedly split the mecha genre into real robots and super robots with MSG. Didn't know you were a Gundam fan, nice to see someone actually making an in-depth review of 0079 , shame they are taking down the monument in japan.
Truly fantastic and in-depth review. I eagerly wait for your review of the TRUE masterpiece of the franchise, G Gundam lol. But really great review, love your videos
Have you watched any of the Gundam: The Origin films that they've been releasing recently? If you have I would love to know your opinion about them. Loved the review btw. I'm glad someone is giving the Gundam 079 the attention it deserves.
I appreciate the fact that the Toymen were trying to showcase the brutality of war, and such, by going against the disneyfication that was promoted by Tezuka - sensei and others before the show (barring AnJ). However, they could have done away with children piloting military grade suits to keep it a little more real, as little things like those were already done before as a gimmick, in shows like Getter Robo and Mazinger Z.
@Kafkals Since uber didn't stated which ver did he watch so i would ask you which ver should i watch the mobile suit gundam,Films or Anime ? An why the anime got cancelled ?
If Uber ever returns he’ll prolly get more views than half these animanga reviewers. This man needs to respond on some serious shit. I’m starting to think he’s dead or some shit
You only touched on them a little bit, and you've mentioned how 0079 and Zeta Gundam are two of your favorite anime ever, but how well do you believe Victory Gundam and Double Zeta Gundam stack up against other Gundam entries or shonen anime/manga in general in quality? What would you rate them out of 10?
I pretty much like all the Gundam series in the UC timeline (except maybe Stardust Memory), but ZZ and Victory are probably several tiers below in terms of the quality of writing compared to 0079 and Zeta. However, both ZZ and Victory are still good so they stack up well to shounen anime/manga in general. But they don't stand up to the very best. I'd probably give them both 6 or 6.5 out of 10.
@uberhikari we miss you and wish you nothing but good health and happiness. You never need to return to this platform just know you are appreciated bro
1:39 The Iron Giant is a 1999 American animated movie, way after Gundam. After all, the original Mobile Suit Gundam aired between 1979 to 1980. Maybe you meant older mecha titles like Mazinger Z and Getter Robo.
I think in this case he was using a more relatable example. After all, it's not as if the subgenre doesn't still exist. I'm willing to bet that more of the audience is familiar with The Iron Giant then Mazinger Z or Getter Robo.
Doctor Paco I won't give him a pass especially since he mentioned "before Gundam". How is it before Gundam when The Iron Giant was made 20 years after the first Gundam anime? lol. He should have his notes nearby in case he remembers something incorrectly. That's what being professional means. And since he's one of the few intellectual anime reviewers on youtube I have high expectations for him.
Mistakes happen, that doesn't mean you aren't professional. But if you'll keep making mistakes in the future, yes, that would be quite unprofessional of you. Now that you're back people have a razor focus on what you say, including me. Take that as a compliment, we have high hopes and expectations for you.
The essential UC timeline: Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 War in a Pocket Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Mobile Suit Double Zeta Gundam Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack
I haven't watch Gundam: The Origin, but as far as I know, it is a retelling of the original Gundam 0079 that primarily follows Char instead of Amuro. It also isn't directed by Tomino.
