Kent is one my teachers in jazz, I literally don't have a physical jazz teacher that I have learning from. One of my mentors Pastor Lafayette Carthon taught me one jazz song, and from that point on I have learned from youtube Jazz teachers!

Definitely. I have trouble keeping up, but unlike the others, he usually posts a full score on his website, which is super helpful.

I've got an old "Andy LaVerne" jazz piano book which says all chords should be named from the lowest note as your auto system does BUT, The rootless voicing concept makes much more sense to me and for me is so much easier to follow. I mean, sure you can change one bass note and make a different chord BUT, we know the song we are trying to play and what key it's in so the rootless voicing concept is far more logical. Green Dolphin street is one of those songs I learned quite well many years ago and then forgot. I'll give in another try now. I like this 4th voicing stuff. very cool!
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 3 года назад
4th voicings are just one aspect of harmony. We need to learn all the techniques, and rootless voicings. in the tradition of Bill Evans, are also the modern sound and necessary to master.

That's great support. It is a lot more work...and the syncing up part is tricky, also getting the views lined up correctly. The acoustic piano with the simple camera was much easier. I'm still working on it...thanks for the comment (any tips?)

@@KentHewittpiano88 I keep a pair of drumsticks next to me and start all videos with three visible stick clicks. In post production (Final Cut Pro) it is very easy to line the transients up visually. Other than that, as a fellow Mason and Hamlin owner I loved seeing that view and hope you return periodically to that beautiful instrument. On the other hand, as a learner your new MIDI rig is a big help. The viewer can pause and reflect on the multiple views you offer. I admire the instruction improvements and feel this is a good direction for your channel. Thanks for asking!

Not a bad sound at all on an electronic KB. Was just playing with some of the quartal harmony recently. Saw that on root inversion, the 7th chord scale become straight up fourths by taking 5th to 4th. Knew the 4 note 4ths chord scale but wasnt aware it was the same with just 5th changed to 4th

Kent's going electric like Dylan and Miles. I just read a bio of Mike Garson, David Bowie's longtime keyboard player. He studied classical music then got into jazz and took lessons from Lennie Tristano for 3 years in NYC. He used to see Bill Evans in the mid '60s at the Village Vanguard and talked him into giving him a lesson. He said Evans spent 6 hours with him and didn't charge anything. I see some of the Evans influence in Kent.

John, you are so hip. What a great story, can you send me a link to read it? I also use to see Bill at the Vanguard in the mid 60's so we are definitely linked. Love the story...thanks!

Mr. Kent, I’ve been playing the piano for 9 months and thanks to you, I’m already improvising over 2-5-1’s & have hand independence. May I suggest a request? I really don’t understand how to connect 251’s, I mean turn around chords? Not sure what it’s called in theory - but it would help a lot of people in my position - Much love, thank you for everything, professor Kent!
