Great to see someone using the skulpt.... One of the most underrated synths. It gets a lot of undeserved hate.

It's a seriously unappreciated synth. It does so much! Build quality is a bit cheap, but man, the sound it makes is incredible.

Thank you! Truth be told, I sold this synthesizer. I really wanted a microfreak, which I got and love, and at the time kind of needed the funds so the Skulpt went away... But I missed it so much I ended up replacing it a little while ago with the newer SE model! It's much the same instrument. I'm not sure whether I'm imagining it but the build quality and the plastic used seems mildly better? And the pots feel like they don't wobble quite as much? And included presets are different and there is straight text rather than diagonal text on the front panel, but other than those fairly minor things, in essence they are the exact same thing. Either way though. Thanks again!

If that's a "toy", you've had an amazingly privileged childhood Alexey!!! Listen past preconceptions based on the look of the case, it's a potent and powerful instrument that makes complex and rich sounds ... smooth and accurate encoders on a functional interface (yes, it's not the same-old linear layout of "traditional" analogue synth's copying the arrangement of modules of the early electronics, because it's not, so hey, it takes a nano-second of familiarisation) ... and realise that it's the spread of the voices you are hearing as much as reverb, the latter only sounds so good because of what it's receiving ... and take advantage of a full size keyboard (or Linnstrument) and the Modalapp ... and enjoy being creative!

Wow!! Built in effects or are you using some outboard or vst stuff? Great atmosphere, I’m looking into this currently
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 года назад
Thank you! The only additional effect was some Valhalla Room reverb, purely because the Skulpt doesn't have it's own reverb. And even then there isn't a whole lot on there so it's basically all sounds from the Skulpt. It does those deep, almost symphonic sounds so well. I'm still loving this thing. The synth engines are incredible, and those built-in effects, the delay and the distortion, fit in so well. They really thought out every control on this thing. There is an editor app available which can alter pretty much any aspect of the sound. But most crucially, all of those parameters can be changed without the app, just using the knobs and buttons on the Skulpt itself. Aside from the fact that it's pretty lightweight, I can't believe they got so much in, and made this thing sound as great as it does for the price. Thanks again for watching and commenting! If you have any more questions feel free to go ahead and ask them. I'm happy to help.

Hello! I have done some tutorial videos, but mostly about particular pieces of gear rather than sounds. Most of these videos will deal with similar sounds to this one: dark ambient, soundscape style stuff. Maybe you can find something helpful! If you're new to this, then (depending where you are) the Modal Skulpt used here can be found pretty cheap. Get a reverb pedal and the rest is up to you! Just bury yourself in it and have fun and things can come together. I am not familiar with Bodzin so I am reading about it now and will definitely check it out.

Thanks for sharing. I have been trying to compare the Skulpt and the Argon 8, and found your drone exploration useful in comparing the two for me. Both are made by the same company and am exploring whether or not the Argon 8 is worth the extra cost. At least for now, I am choosing to stay with the Skulpt and hopefully bring out the quality of sounds that you are doing from the unit. It seems that both units benefit from a good quality delay and reverb unit added to the output.
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 года назад
Thanks for watching! Glad I could help. I too am interested in the Argon 8. They seem to share some similar sounds but seem to be different in a whole host of other ways. Especially price, but that's understandable; you seem to get a whole lot more instrument with the Argon 8. I've heard other people say that the Skulpt and the Argon 8 complement each other very well. If you have not already, maybe have a look at one of my recent videos, the first part of my Eurorack effects build. I do a piece of music in that video where I run the Skulpt through a Mutable Instruments Clouds clone and the droning soundscape is epic. As with this piece, the only other effect I used was some Valhalla reverb. Feel free to ask any more questions. Thanks again!

Holy shit, that's nice! Is there a hold function to put out the hands and working on the desk? ps. Infinite
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 года назад
There sure is! There is a button marked "sustain" on the front panel, just right of the shift button. Any note played while sustain is engaged will be held, just playing on forever. The held note(s) only stop when the sustain function is turned off. The sustain function must come right at the beginning of the sound chain (if that makes any sense) because while a sound is being held you can still apply the Skulpt's effects to that sound. Thanks for watching and commenting! Feel free to ask any further questions! I'm loving the Skulpt and I just received a Walrus Slo reverb that I'm running it through and it sounds so vast. Definitely a video to come on that soon! Cheers!

Awesome sounds you’re making! But the vid is 2 months old and I see your recent videos are about spitfire. So I am curious, did the synth start to feel limited qua sound set after a while? Or are you still in love and also just exploring other things? Do you still play it regularly without recording to RU-vid?
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 года назад
Hello there! Yes, I'm still playing and loving the Skulpt. I certainly don't feel limited by it's sounds or depth. I'm just, as you say, exploring other sounds. For a quite a while I've been looking for affordable and decent piano and strings sounds, hence some recent videos mostly using virtual instruments. The spitfire audio stuff has been awesome. That's why I haven't been uploading quite as often as I'd like. Besides everything going on in the world right now (I'm actually finding that I have LESS free time due to home/family changes in commitments), I've been really delving into other gear and experimenting with different sounds and how they might interact with one another. Best rest assured I'm still loving the Skulpt and play it almost daily. Sure, there are some limits; it is VERY lightweight and there is little resistance in those wobbly knobs. Sometimes if I hit the left hand side of the case just right it'll trigger a note. And I'd prefer 1/4 inch jacks and no micro USB. But the sounds it makes and the tweaking you can do to those sounds (not to mention the low price!) more than makes up for the few shortcomings. The Skulpt, along with my Yamaha Reface CS, Novation Circuit and a few effects pedals, is the only hardware gear I currently have on my desk. But thanks for watching and commenting! I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have. Honestly, I get asked about the Skulpt quite a bit so I'll probably end up doing a review and demo video of it some time. Cheers!

The Digital Lost good to hear you still like it and use it! It looks awesomely portable. I am not in the market for a synth right now since I recently ordered a Korg Wavestate, but I like the Modal synths quite a lot qua sounds. The Argon8 also sounds very good.
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 года назад
Yep, the Argon 8 does look and sound really nice. I've been tempted by that and the Korg wavestate. I agree that the Skulpt would be a good portable synth. Sure, it isn't the most solid thing, but it's USB or battery powered, and they give a pretty decent, substantial cover in the box. Once things clear up outside in the world I fully intend to take it out and about a bit.
@HotStrange
@HotStrange 3 года назад
I mean people don’t generally play only one synth. Don’t know why you’d expect him to only make videos about the Skulpt or only use the Skulpt.
@jantuitman
@jantuitman 3 года назад
@@HotStrange I don’t expect him to only make videos about one thing. I was somewhat considering to buy this synth because I was away from home a lot at that time and a portable synth can be easily taken somewhere. But I worried if this synth in particular has enough variation in what it can do to be long term interesting to me. So I just wandered if the maker of this video got bored by the synth or still likes it. That’s all. Not meaning to judge someone else, only to judge if the synth fits me.

Hello! Honestly, I can't remember exactly what I was using back then, but at that time I think it was either the regular, old Ableton Lite or Reaper. I was at a point then where I was trying out different DAWs so it was either of them. Regardless, they were being used as really basic sound recorders and the only effect that was used was Valhalla Room reverb. In the end, Ableton won out and now I generally use Ableton Live Standard. This or Microfreak ? 🤔
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 года назад
I've never used a microfreak but it sure looks interesting. It seems to be a bit more plucky than the Skulpt here, if that makes any sense. I love the idea of the expressive key pads on the microfreak, but I love the heavy, droning, brooding sounds the Skulpt makes. A Skulpt with those microfreak "keys" would be pretty nice tho! So yeah, which one probably depends on the sound you're after; something plucky and a bit strange like the microfreak? Or the deep sounds of a broken, digital symphony rumbling from somewhere within the planet core like the Skulpt? Ideally both!

I have both. Two things about the MF stand out: it’s oscillators can do “normal” stuff but also have things like wavetables, karplus, and other useful stuff; and the mod matrix on the MF almost turns it into a semi-modular and is really great for experimenting with which you don’t have on the Skulpt. Obviously the Skulpt has a ton more oscillators so shines in pads and drones. The “touch” keys on the MF are bigger but the Skulpt is definitely more portable.
@GerenM63
@GerenM63 3 года назад
Yes. Both. They're completely different animals. I have both, though just got the Skulpt SE last week. They're both fantastic at what they do. The Microfreak is a single "oscillator" wavetable synth with an amazing selection of ways to warp the sound engines. But, it has no onboard effects (delay, reverb) so I run mine through a series of Flamma effects pedals to add stereo modulation, delay, and reverb. I'm just learning my way 'round the Skulpt, but it's really a lot like a traditional 2 oscillator synth, but with better control routing. The newest firmware let's you chain two together to double the voice count, and I was thinking about doing that. But, hearing this, I'm thinking that the four voices of the Skulpt through appropriate effects is plenty.

cmon man, reverb makes good any sound source. Without sound effect it sounds like a toy.
@thedigitallost
@thedigitallost 4 года назад
Whilst I love reverb, especially the Valhalla stuff, I will absolutely disagree that without it the Skulpt sounds like a toy. There are plenty of videos here on RU-vid that show off this gear without reverb, and I've been playing it a whole lot without reverb myself, and I'd certainly not call the sound toy like in any way imaginable. I'll most likely do my own demo/review of this synth and use it without any additional effects. Thanks for watching and commenting! Hopefully you were able to check out some more of my stuff and maybe even some different Skulpt demos. No one is saying you have to like it or want one, but to write it off as a toy is inaccurate and you'll only be missing out. Cheers!
