modbus registers explained
In Modbus RTU, the memory mapping refers to the organization of data within the slave devices. It defines how data is stored and accessed by the master device. The memory mapping in Modbus RTU is based on four types of data: coils, discrete inputs, input registers, and holding registers.
Coils: Coils are used to represent discrete values, typically used for outputs. They are mapped into the memory as binary values (0 or 1). The addressing for coils starts at 0 and continues sequentially.
Discrete Inputs: Discrete inputs represent binary values, usually used for inputs. They are read-only values that provide information about the state of an input. Like coils, discrete inputs are also mapped sequentially starting from address 0.
Input Registers: Input registers store 16-bit values, and they are typically used for analog inputs or sensor readings. Input registers are read-only and provide information to the master device. The addressing for input registers starts at 0 and continues sequentially.
Holding Registers: Holding registers are used for various purposes, such as storing output values, control parameters, or configuration settings. Holding registers are read-write and can store 16-bit values. Similar to other data types, the addressing for holding registers starts at 0 and continues sequentially.
The Modbus RTU memory mapping specifies the starting addresses and the number of data elements available for each data type. For example, if you have a device that has 8 coils, they would be addressed from 0 to 7. Similarly, if you have 10 input registers, they would be addressed from 0 to 9.
When communicating with Modbus RTU devices, the master device sends requests to read or write data to specific addresses within the slave devices' memory map. The requests include the function code, the starting address, and the number of elements to read or write.
It's important to note that the memory mapping details can vary between different Modbus RTU devices and manufacturers. Therefore, it is crucial to consult the device's documentation or datasheet to get the specific memory mapping details for the device you are working with.
