The automatic transmission had been developed by Chaparral themselves to use in the 2C, which used the "clutch" pedal to change the rear wing angle (a la DRS). It was kept in all Chaparral cars after that, and actually caused problems when they switched to a bigger 7l engine with the 2F. It also caused the brakes to overheat more easily, as it didn't offer as much engine braking as a manual transmission
@fillman86
@fillman86 Год назад
I do know about the DRS, and is why I made the jump onto this car first. I also didn't think of the downsides of the brakes with an auto... that's a good point!

when I heard three speed automatic I just assumed they mated a big block Chevy to a turbo 400 (th400) transmission, I didn't know they made something custom. I learned something new today

The Chaparral 2J might not be the most visually appealing car out there, but it served it's main purpose of innovation, despite not winning a single race. It was so devoted to one specific goal that Jim Hall himself didn't care that he won no trophies for not finishing. But he did earm massive amounts of respect, alongside the 2J
@fillman86
@fillman86 Год назад
I didn't realise it "never" won, but I did know that it struggled a lot with how unreliable it was haha
@ShazotoTouge
@ShazotoTouge Год назад
For the 2J, the slushbox was actually to prevent the car from getting unsettled mid corner due to the ground effect it caused. With how things were sealed, a manual would only move the skirts up, losing tons of downforce in the process
@fillman86
@fillman86 Год назад
I doubt that, as the auto was already their transmission of choice before, due to not having to take their hands off the wheel and they could have just changed how the skirt articulation worked, if that was an issue

The automatic transmission was used partially because it gave a more gentle power delivery. Tires of the day were rather more fragile than they are today and so they tended to overheat. That's one reason at least I'm sure there are more.

First off, the thing used a semi-automatic transaxle, not a true auto. Second, those things on the back that you thought were to hold the skirts in place are actually tracks for them to move on, because they were actually free floating, and moved with the suspension. They did this because if it had fixed skirts, then when it went into a turn, it would roll somewhat, which would lift the inside skirt up, releasing some of the vacuum, which would cause the car to lose grip, and spin out. Also, the fans in this thing were originally radiator fans on an M107 self-propelled gun, were spun to 10,000 RPM by a 2-stroke snowmobile engine, and it could do 40 mph on fan power alone.

The devs should not remove it since it does represent an aspect of a real car. Though perhaps they should make it so it's dependent on keeping the vehicle close enough to the ground to keep it realistic. And actually, that modification there might even allow for relatively realistic hovercrafts now I that I'm thinking about it; you would just need set the value upwards instead of downwards.
