Loved the video as it answered all my rack questions. I have the M3 and the same roof box you have, now all I have to do is order the Tesla rack (when it becomes available again). It also confirms for me that the rack actually exists; its nice to see one actually received and installed. Your other video showing a limited test of range loss with the rack, and the rack with the box as compared to the naked roof was also interesting and gives me an idea of what to expect when using the rack. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks for the video. The roof rack details and installation was something very important to me. I whish too that we could let the hooks installed hidden in small pods. Not many videos from the cold regions and Canada. Greetins from Montreal

This is the first time I have seen that a piece of plastic adhesive needs to be applied to a roof rack solution. Did the set come with more than four of these plastic covers? Are one supposed to have them on there forever if not?

Thanks for the Video... It was very useful as I installed my roof rack today. It only took about 15 minutes... I was in Cranbrook at the beginning of November - Did I see your car parked at the airport? There are not many Tesla's in that part of the country yet...

Thanks for doing this vid. The hardware with inside threads is a "nut" - the outside threaded rod with a head is a "bolt". A "stud" is probably the best name for the hook thing, but the "nut" is certainly not a "bolt".
@kootenayevfamily4208

Yeah I probably slipped somewhere while talking during the install - my mind sometimes slips at the correct word for an object during speech - I've had this happen over the years, sometimes at inopportune moments! Rest assured I do know the difference :)
@Refaldooloo
@Refaldooloo 5 лет назад
@@kootenayevfamily4208 Furthermore, only the first 2-3 threads of a bolt do all of the work, the rest are not necessary. Cheers!

Great video! I'm sure it was pretty cold that day. This could explain the rubber pads being stiffer and preventing the bars from getting lower and exposing more thread on the bolt. I also enjoyed your consumption video. 2% with the bars on doesn't seem too bad but wondering if this would exponentially increase at highway speeds (110-130kph) Have you tested at higher speeds? Thanks again and keep up the great work.
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 5 лет назад
I don't have any highways close to me that allow those kind of speeds (nor are they safe in winter). When I get a chance to test I will do so though and post another video.

Informative video. Do you think water could aggregate under the rack, between the glas and paintworks? Putting on any kind of grease to prevent rust?
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 5 лет назад
The rubber that sticks out from under the glass is pretty loose already, I don't think adding the rack changes anything in this respect. Having said that, I will keep an eye out for it and post a follow-up review in several months on how it has held up.
@StaticApnea
@StaticApnea 5 лет назад
Thanks for the vid. What about water, any chance water will accumulate underneath the j-shaped hook that goes underneath the glass and lead to leakage inside the car?
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 5 лет назад
Good question... I don't think so, as the rubber that you move out of the way to insert the j-bolt "thingy" is so flimsy that I'm sure water could get under there before. I speculated in the video that the rubber might only be there as UV protection against whatever bonding/sealing agent they use for the glass itself to the roof. I will keep an eye on it and check periodically to see though.

Thanks for the video. I was hoping for an easier procedure to mount the roof rack, not something to do in a hurry. Will the protective film have to stay on the roof?
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 5 лет назад
Me too... the Model S is much easier, you just thread bolts down into an insert in the roof structure - I wish they had done the same for the Model 3... but I plan to just leave my bars on pretty much all the time and just take the pod/box on and off seasonally. (insideevs.com/video-tesla-model-s-roof-rack-install/)
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 5 лет назад
I forgot to add, yes the film has to stay on the roof, which I wouldn't be too enamoured with if I was planning to take the bars off.

An easy way to finish snug a crown nut already threaded on the bolt is to couple the short end of Allen key into its crown to wrench on the long arm for more torque
@johnp.weiksnar6861
@johnp.weiksnar6861 5 лет назад
True, but on a glass roof, I think he was going for the more conservative approach. . . .
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 5 лет назад
Yes I was going more conservative - the manual only calls for 8 Nm, which is relatively easy to apply with the 10cm long Allen key supplied (I actually didn't even torque it that much). I took it off and put it back on yesterday and filmed it - I'll have another short video up in a few days about it with more details.
@philoso377

John P. Weiksnar I agree
@philoso377
@philoso377 5 лет назад
Kootenay EV Family Yes I felt your concern. No problem. I gathered that J shape metal bracket couple the mounting force at the under side glass fringe buffered through some rubber gasket ? I think 8 n.m is on the safe side. By the way that torque only benefits frictional force but holding force, to prevent lateral shifts. Hope that helps.

Whats the distance between those racks? 70cm? How much time would you estimate to use on the installing of the racks now, with the experience you gained?
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 5 лет назад
Yes the distance is 71 cm from the leading edge of one bar to the leading edge of the other. I took the rack off yesterday and re-installed it and it took me about 20 minutes. I'll have another video posted in a few days discussing it in more detail.

@@kootenayevfamily4208 well i have the same car well maybe not.. 2020 performance model 3 ...it was more of a joke question? Im guessing your wife or something wanted you to put in on there. I mean ski racks work well for skis and don't make it look like you have a giant rocket pack ontop of the car and greatly reduces range 😆
@kootenayevfamily4208
@kootenayevfamily4208 3 года назад
@@johnny12895 for context, I came from a Subaru Forester and the only way this car was going to work for my family was to add a roof box. I've had a roof box on almost every vehicle I've owned to carry my skis (to protect them from road damage), my stinky bike gear in the summer, and my camping gear. I would have bought a Model Y if Tesla had made that car first - I don't car about the sports car aspect (although I've grown to enjoy it I must say!) I knew it was going to reduce range and that's why I bought a long range. I also tow with my Model 3 haha!
