How To Reduce Tesla Model 3 Road Noise (easy and cheap)

The things that bothered me the most in my Tesla model 3 is the road noise and the sound of the door as it closes. After reading on various forums, some have mentioned about adding seals to the doors. Here's my how to video to make your model 3 not only quieter but also have a deep sound when you close its doors.

This definitely works on all cars, but be careful on the bottom doors as there's drainage holes and they need to let the water out so if you're sealing them in then it has the potential to hold it.

Update: I tried this for the front doors only. Last week I used a decibel meter with AC on before installing rubber seals. Overall avg was 83 dB with a spike to 92 dB. Today driving the same route with AC on, but with stronger winds today, the avg was 78 dB with a spike to 90dB....probably when using the turn signals. I have enough seals to do the back doors and will then measure again.

Who said a Model 3 was luxury? It may be in a luxury division when being rated by Consumer Reports, but in no way should the Model 3 be confused with elegance. The fit and finish of a Mercedes is still much better. Now, technology and performance, cost to operate, and long-term maintenance, and most importantly safety? Now you are finding why Tesla is selling so many Model 3's. One ride in a Model 3 (I own one), and luxury is not the word you will use to describe.

Thanks for your video, installed mine in the morning. The front z seal is also very easy to install if you guide the seal inside the hinge first. I will also soundproof the doors and tailgate with sound deadeners inside the door. Between these two things, the road noise should be much reduced.

I did a baseline sound check on my way to work this morning and the average DB was 85 for the whole drive. About 87 average on the freeway. That’s high enough to cause hearing loss over time. I hoping to bring the noise level bellow 85 on freeway speed and I believe the seals could probably do that.

While the installation side of the video is really helpful, the big thing everybody wants to know to a video like this and you should have done is used a sound level sensor on a given road surface and got the base Model 3 noise levels (substantial enough to have all our interest as owners). Then do this, and end with the drive back out to test the difference and give some comparisons to other brands of comparable cars to see where this puts your proofed Model 3. Just feedback more for future videos, as otherwise great job.

I’m curious about how this impacts the water drains on the door. It appears the additional bottom seal will trap water between the rocker and the door without letting it drain down and out of the door. This could pose mildew and condensation issues.
@AutomotiveRomance
@AutomotiveRomance 5 лет назад
Hayk Samvelyan This is exactly what I was gonna comment. Also covering the folded seam will not allow moisture to escape and potentially cause rust issues in that area (which is already prone to corrosion when not covered). That bottom seal won’t really do anything since the bottom part is overflush to the rocker anyway.
