I enjoyed every single second of your video. Thank you! I was up there from Germany about two weeks later with my 60 kWh LFP Model 3 and have to say that the area between Narvik and Alta has the best views and the most beautiful nature I have ever seen. I even spotted Orcas close to Skibotn (where you charged the first time after leaving Tromsø). They were hunting atlantic herrings in the fjords around Skibotn and were just about 100 meters from the shore. On the way back I went trough Finland and Sweden too and used the same Recharge station you did. After watching your video I just want to book the next ferry and get back to Norway. I just want to be there watching the beautiful nature while eating some tasty reindeer and bring some memories and some more reindeer meat home, which I did when I was there in november/december (about 7 lbs for Christmas dinner kept frozen in the frunk).

Kyle: at 1:27:40'ish you mention that you have to "BYOC" (bring your own cable). In Europe for the Type 2 public charging this is standard. It allows the charging locations to look much neater and clean compared to the US approach with our dangling cables, which are of course, susceptible to vandalism. Plus they collect leaves and dirt as the coiled cables lie on the ground. With this approach, you always have your own cable, so the probability of encountering damaged ones or having your charge port damaged due to a worn-out or injured plug goes to zero. Too bad the SAE didn't consider that approach for the J-1772's we have in the US. I carry a 25 ft. J-1772 extension cord, which would allow me to stretch the connection away from a blocked (ICE'd) slot and still get a charge. (Admittedly I can't say I've ever used it except sometimes at home.)😏

Carrying your own cable gives you more freedom with the parking. Many people carry a short one for 90% of the cases and a long one for the 10% of times when some idiot is blocking the charging spot.

Late comment about the Type2 cables - Different car have different charge ports. Leaf and older cars have the Type1/J1772 plug. New cars have Type2. Tesla Roadster has the Tesla Roadster plug. By providing your own cable the charging station works with all kinds of vehicles. And you don't have any maintenance issues with worn or damaged cables and plugs.

The main reason for carrying your own cable is that it (a) makes the charger cheaper to make, (b) isn't vandalised or smashed, (c) is your responsibility to maintain. Plus, as you say, looks rider.

Regarding outlets for block heating. In new installations, like the one you had in Umeå, they are temperature dependent. They do not have power on all the time, you plug in you car and set your departure time. The outlet then starts at different time depending on the surrounding temperature. So. say at around 0 C the will only deliver power for 30 minutes, but when you have -20 C you will have power 3 hours before your departure.

The parking structure in Tromsø is also a bomb shelter in case of war. You don't need blast doors that are always open to park cars. If you are rolling in from... the east... this is around the area you would encounter difficult mountainous terrain. A fact that is no fun at all, these days.

Bomb shelter that back in the 70s and 80s at the height of the cold war had to always be in readiness state. No parking then! All public buildings were required to have these. After the wall fell, regulations loosened up, and these shelters were repurposed for other things such as parking. In schools they usually became storage space.

The 3 post cabinets are actually imo better than 4 post ones if you only have a single cabinet. The cabinet can supply around 300kW or 550kW max (depends on the cabinet type), which means if 4 cars would be charging there you would have the same issue as on V2 chargers. The magic behind V3 is just that the cabinets can share power between each other compared to V2. But this won't work with a single cabinet :P In the German Tesla Forum there was a great test from two years ago on the Nüburgring Supercharger. It's a V3 with 4posts. One car gets 250kW, two cars will each get 150kW, 3cars around 100kW and 4cars 75kW. It's a 300kW cabinet and it the end it also would be suitable for only 3 stalls, 4 aren't faster.
@k34561
@k34561 Год назад
I have photographed a name plate on a US V3 cabinet. There is a 3 phase AC input. It can be attached attached to 380-480V 3 phase up to 430 Amps. On 480V 3 Phase (Common in US) this gives 357kW power. On 400V 3 Phase this gives 297kW power. There is also a 575kW DC Input/Output at 880-1000V 640 Amps. My guess is this is mostly used for sharing power between cabinets. It could also be used to hook up to batteries like a Megapack. Therefore these cabinets can handle 932kW = 357kW + 575kW. On a single cabinet 480V 3 Phase site. 4 cars at 90kW, 3 cars at 120kW, 2 cars at 180kW, 1 car at 250kW. On a 3 cabinet 480V site 12 stall site, there is 1080kW shared between the cars. So 4 cars will get 250kW unless all 4 cars are hooked to one cabinet. That does mean a fully loaded site will get slow. I experienced that at the Michigan City, IN site when it was 8 stall.

1:27:40 it's not just about theft, but also about cable length. People can use 5 or even 7 m long cables for type 2 to be more flexible with parking. And if the charging outlet itself would have a fixed 5 m long cable it could easily lay around when not in use, become damaged, people may stumble over it. - And theft: a thief may prefer to cut the cable from an unused station with no voltage on, than while it is used.

You should have used the 16 stall v3 charger in Sundsvall instead of the old v2 station to save a couple of seconds, but the old v2 works fine as well. Btw that OKQ8 charger is manefactured by Delta, SK (Skellefteåkraft) is a power company that works together with OKQ8 to build out their EV charging network. OKQ8 is one of the largest petrol station brands in Sweden and are building hundreds of fast chargers at their station the comming years, just as Cirkle K, their largest competitor.

That is just holding back electric mobility. People don't have such problems with ICE vehicles. It also shows why Teslas are so awesome, even in foreign country one charge. But only on highways and some destination chargers. I hope they also had an AC charging network, but I know it would be difficult due to different regulations in different cities.
