In this model building technique video, I'll show a simple pre-shading technique done with an acrylic wash (thinned black paint). This method is quick, easy, correctable, and doesn't smell up the house!
Presiding is typically done prior to airbrushing the color coat onto the model. The effect gets toned down with the application of the color coat on top, but adds subtle depth to the finished model. This enhances the realism of your kit builds.

Nice approach. I do my preshading using the classic airbrushing technique, but your method is worth trying.

I think some modelers OVER DO IT… I was in the US ARMY, and vehicles and helicopters were never that weathered, even after being in the field… LESS IS MORE… Your example is PERFECT, just right… TO MUCH, takes it out of scale… I still use enamels, so I use WATERED DOWN ACRYLICS ACRYLICS = ENAMEL WEATHERING ENAMELS = ACRYLIC WEATHERING I’m enjoying your channel, You get right to the subject, and don’t draw it out you keep it simple… Until next time… CHRIS from OHIO 🇺🇸

Great advice! I do my preshading both with panel line wash or with a very thinned black paint airbrushed depending on scale and subject. I like the effects either way and you’re right if you think it’s too much you can paint over your “happy little mistakes”!

I've been toying with the notion of experimenting with extra fine Posca paint markers for pre-shading, primarily compartments and panel lines (but not rivets). Have yet to try, but I'm thinking it _might_ be fast and easy and maybe a little more subtle than airbrushing, especially when using a darker shade but not so dark as black.

This is the video I've been waiting for. In my previous building life I just built " clean" out of the box with Matt and Glossy spray. The materials for a " washing" a whole model were not available. I came close on figures by thinning down darker than the uniform brushing on " utilities" then dry brushing.. Your pre-shading technique adds the right about to bring out that extra dimension of the aircraft. I'm heading to the barn to get some paint mules :-) Do the puddy snakes absorb the spray paint?

No, the putty snakes don't absorb paint. They do bond with the rubber cement and can't be reused. Let me know how the test session goes.

Hello! making the ARDU Mirage IIIo White and Orange scheme, and I was wondering if this method would work okay for white? or should I use a different method? Thanks!

It should work for any color as long as the top color isn't applied to thick. You can also apply an acrylic wash (using this same method) over a gloss finish. For a more organic look, you can use pastels to enhance the panel lines on a flat or satin finish and seal with clear.
