Hi Simon, Ive recently started building a new gauge layout on a 1.5 x .75 M base. I’ve had a good start because I picked some great stuff of the brother in law ie loco with carriages, rolling stock, flexible track, EZ controller points, wire, fishplates etc to get going and have built 2 loops with turnouts and fitted point motors. I have the class 24 loco with no lights. The one with red on its side. Tonight I had my first stutter and found the wheel’s needed a slight clean. Your video will come in handy at a later stage. You must be so relieved to see this lil beauty running again. I do like the way Farish have made their locos, so easy to work on, but they are a learning curve to be mastered.
Yes so good to have my 1st ever loco running again! I agree about the way thy are made, I was terrified I wouldn't get it back together, it was only because it was completely dead that I decided to do it, but it was quite straightforward in the end 🚂
Good video. Good point about doing things over a table. I dismantled my DC Battle of Brittain class loco and the motor came apart and fell on the floor and I lost one of the brushes. 🤦♀️ Lesson learnt the hard way sadly. Monique from Brisbane
Great job with the Class 24, so pleased you got it running again. Couple of useful tips, when working on locos I use a microfibre cloth to rest my loco on and work over so if any screws fall out the cloth catches them. If a loco dies always worth chucking a blanking plate back in to see if will still run on dc, if it did then you could put it down to a faulty decoder. the last tip is I have a decoder tester which I mainly got so I know a chip works properly before installation, especially if hard wiring a loco. I'll have a search for decoder testers...didn't know they existed 😅 Good tip on the cloth, so many tiny screws that could bounce away never to be seen again. Yeah I won't be making the mistake of just sticking a new expensive DCC chip in without checking DC first...costly mistake! 👍
Hi Simon - you can disassemble the actual bogies to easily clean them. Good to see how to take the rest of the loco apart. Mark at Piddle in the Marsh had done a video for you re the bogies. Cheers Euan

I would now keep your eyes peeled for an identical loco on ebay etc that is Spares or Repair on the cheap. You can use your parts to fix it up and maybe do it in a different livery and have another train at minimum cost. So all is not lost having the extra parts...

Brilliant thank you Simon for such an educational video especially for us “newbies” who know nowt. Can you please video all your servicing on each of your different locomotives? Charlie Bishop uses an old white towel when he is stripping down a loco so that the screws etc cannot bounce onto the floor, what are your thoughts on this or would the towel introduce more unwanted matter into the loco?

Thanks for watching Dave. Turns out I had put those coupling in upside down so its fine now! The couplings have a slight curve on 1 side which should face the ground.
That reminds me. I really must investigate why my EMD E8 stopped dead and refused to start again. Do you have the emergency stop button on the Z21set to 'power off' or just 'stop'? I have mine set to power off. Some people have reported problems with the Z21 firmware upgrade. Have you had any issues with it?
Not had any issues with the latest firmware thankfully. I have mine set to to power off too so it cuts out the power and stops any short circuits as soon as possible 👍
