Nice one Jen, there's nothing wrong with adding a diesel loco to the layout. They are all loco's and should all be treated the same. Going back 20 or 40 years or more there was a clear animosity towards anything that replaced steam but every loco has its time. So many diesel locos were scrapped without a hint of preservation just like some of the steamers that were before them. Times and perceptions have thankfully moved on more these days and there is a place for the old withdrawn loco's of yester decade with of steam, diesel and even electric (if you can get the power) to run together as a heritage railway. Many thanks for sharing and dipping your toes into the DCC puddle.

The DCC has deacceleration to make it look real on slowing down, it also has acceleration so when you set the train off it starts slowly then picks up speed, also don't forget to press number 1 to set the engine sound going

@@_j_loco_ DCC can be very tricky so just take your time, the big remember, the trains will just keep going till you tell it what to do, DCC. you control the loco, not the track as with DC, enjoy

Hi, some dcc chips have a feature called active braking, most common is button number 2 which by pressing you can bring the loco to a nice controlled stop. Might be worth giving it a try? I would have thought your O gauge ECT black five would definitely have the braking function.

That thing with coasting for a while before stopping brings to mind the time Pre-DCC when in 1980s I got a powerpack by MRC which had a switch for a new function "Momentum". The switch turned on a set of electronics in the powerpack which made the train accelerate more slowly and gradually as like a real one would, and then slow down and stop gradually as a real one would with the mass it has. Experimented with it some but didn't much use it as my layout was only 6 feet long featuring industrial switching/shunting. Also in play was the ego factor of having learned the old school powerpack well enough that I could drive up to freight cars and have the Kadees couple without the cars moving.😁 Even though I don't use DCC at home it has been good for the hobby.
@_j_loco_
@_j_loco_ 3 месяца назад
Sounds like you certainly mastered the art of using those power packs. I must try the same skill with these DCCs 😁

Stepping over to the DCC side and diesel too Jen! It’s a minefield and once you get to grips with cv’s to adjust the characteristics of the motor to suit your layout and the functions you’ll love it 😃👍 basic ones are F1 sound and F0 lights, you’ve already got to grips with the horns 😆 nice one and enjoy the journey 👍

Hi Jen, I'm of the belief that a model should *only* have the capability to model the movement of the real thing. By the very definition of the word 'model' it should model or replicate the real thing, and that of course includes movement. Sudden stops and starts in my opinion should be left to the world of toy trains. I have a battery powered O gauge locomotive and I have converted the controller so that it is impossible to make it stop suddenly. Its emergency stop is a realistic one, and that's it! If it's gonna crash it's gonna CRASH 😳 Tough! I then recover the crash in as realistic a manner as I can. As I think others have pointed out, you can adjust the rate of acceleration and deceleration by going into what they call the CVs (Configuration Variables). You know what they say, when in doubt, read the instructions 😀
@_j_loco_
@_j_loco_ 3 месяца назад
Thankyou for sharing your thoughts on that and yes you are quite right far more realistic I guess. It's no doubt just the difference I've noticed going from DC to experimental DCC 😁

That's the beauty of dcc over dc, you drive the loco. I think it's cv4 determines how quickly the loco slows to a halt when you reduce the throttle. depending on the dcc chip, usually function F4 is active brake like the brake pedal on a car. Hold it on and the loco will stop quicker.

That Diesel slowing down like that, seems to be programmed to control slow down momentum. I am not sure on your dcc controller, but generally you can change that momentum speed to suit your locos. On the NCE powercab, you can change that momentum speed to slow down as you would like. Anyway, love watching your vids and love your layout. Regards Ken

Hello Jen and welcome to the world of dcc. You will soon get the hand of controlling locos and the inertia that you can programme into chipped engines. More to the point, it's lie the real thing as they don't take off like a bullet and stop on a sixpence. Just takes a bit of planning and I like 'driving' my trains instead of pressing a button. Don't forget if things look like they're going pear shaped, hit the big red button and everything comes to a dead stop.

Sir Nigel was in Newcastle on Saturday and he had a diesel at the back of his train, so I suppose it's allowed. 😁 You can change the braking distance with DCC but it's not so easy with those keyboard handsets. I'm not saying it's hard. It just means you have to read the manual carefully and remember what it says.

Hi, the slowing down is controlled by CV4 if you reduce this to around 10-15 it’ll be a lot more controllable. 0 will stop it dead. I did this video few years ago, maybe helpful. MODEL RAILWAY - BASIC CV SETTINGS 4 REALISTIC RUNNING ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--pfhFHamfsE.html
