In this episode of Model Railroading with Jack Burgess, Jack takes us back to a time when he was just getting started. Did you know he had more than one layout before his current "ultimate layout" was even planned?
You'll learn about the reasons for the decisions made as well as many of the research, design, and building methods he used in this first part of two episodes that covers the entire span of Jack's interest in model railroading.

I don't know if Mr Burgess will get to read this but I really wanted to say to him how much I enjoy his Videos. I live in Southwest Britain and am an ex PW Railway Engineer. I do hope you're keeping well, do you still do any Work on your wonderful Railroad? As I lost my dear Wife after 54 Years in 2022 it's been a while since I watched any of these Videos so I'm going to be having a look at them over the coming Months especially your modelling Videos using Styrene. Your an Inspiration Thank you.

I've watched all your videos. In my opinion you are the most organized modelrailroader I've ever seen. I admire your attention to detail. Thank you.

Stephen... I was organized when I was a 8-9 year-old building plastic airplanes, ships, etc. When I got home from the hobby shop (walking a mile each way), I would take a 2'x3' piece of construction paper and draw circles for the various parts, sorted by type. Only then would I start building the model. These days, when I am building a resin kit, I have a tray with spaces for the different parts. Jack Burgess

Thank you for all that you have done for model railroading. Your example is a benefit to all of us who never have been able to get completely involved in the hobby. I have only built 2 layouts over the years and both were small, one N scale and one HO. I just never had the room. But I really admire your layout and your whole attitude about research and construction.

@@yvfan Jack, thanks for the reply. This is certainly more convenient than sending postal letters isn't it. I remember those days as well as I turned 79 6 weeks ago. The railroad I always wanted to build was the South pacific coast railroad. It only ran from San Francisco to Santa Cruz but was very interesting never the less. It also started life to serve the lumber industry and helped to rebuild SF after the 1906 earthquake and fire. I served in the Navy from 1964 to 1968 and was trained as a photo analyst which entailed map reading, developing film, topography etc. so I can appreciate the skills you have learned and employed in building your layout. This getting far too long winded for your patience so a final Thanks, I have really enjoyed the series about the planning and construction of your layout. Gary

Pretty sure the SPCRR ran from Alameda to Santa Cruz! :)

@@tsgmultimedia You are entirely correct. Last time I heard Alameda was on the San Francisco bay. the RR used a ferry from Frisco to Alameda. I have driven the route from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz. There is now a dam and reservoir just west of Los Gatos that covers where the first station was at Alma. Cal highway 17 covers the route pretty closely. Than you can take summit road to get to part of the route. The RR That went up to the logging area is still in use as a tourist excursion. I am sure that this is more than you ever wanted to hear about the SCPRR, so have a great day. Gary

My entire childhood i asked every year for model railroad. I think it was for my 12 or 13th bday I got the overland Bachmann set, and with my allowance would buy as much as I could, I’m on my sixth layout since then ( I have moved many many times in the last several years) and my current layout hopefully Is a lifelong project. I’ve always had to model on a budget. When younger often times I’d get carried away and put myself in binds over trains and now my layout will cost thousands before it’s completed. It’ll take years to afford it but I try to work and purchase what and when I can. It’ll likely be months or a year before my layouts finally under power, but when it is man I cannot wait to put out amazing switching ops sessions and showcase early 1900’s south Texas railroading

I'm not sure what to say. Having watched and read about your models and documentation of the Yosemite Valley over many years(decades(?)). Thank you for sharing.
