In this episode of Model Railroading with Jack Burgess, Jack talks about Yosemite Valley Railroad Observation Car No. 330. Jack showed off his HO Scale scratch-built 330 in his layout tour a few years ago. That model has a much deeper story to it, though!
The real YV 330 still exists, and has been restored almost to its original condition by Wes and Claudia Swift, who purchased the car for one dollar, rescuing it from an unknown destiny... but most likely not a good one.
This is a look at the unique relationship between the model, the prototype, and a story that weaves the history, the people, and the equipment together in a way that is truly unforgettable.

I haven't been up there in the Yosemite Valley since 1981. Brings so much great memories. I'm going to try and get up there again this year. Thanks for the share, Chris

Good grief! I saw this video pop up in my subscriptions and as a Midwestern modeler I though I had no interest in watching any of this. I clicked and began watching and couldn’t stop! Most excellent presentation Jack and now I have a small spot for the YV. 5 stars for this video! Time to google the YV and learn more. 😉

Jack, I really enjoyed this video from start to finish. Your comment on how you built your car using etched brass was modeling history. The jig for doing the scribing was creative. I hope you do a follow up on the O scale version using all the new techniques available today. Bob Poli

Excellent video and excellent work, Jack, in terms of modeling as well as that dedicated to restoring the prototype. I was surprised to learn that the building of the latter only dates to the first decade of the 20th Century. For some reason, I had assumed that this design, at least the exterior, especially the shape of the windows, etc., dated significantly earlier (as seen, for example, in the passenger rolling stock at the museum in Strasburg PA). But this is not the case? The window shape, etc., only dates to the early 20th century?

All of my knowledge of railroads is limited to the Yosemite Valley Railroad and I have long thought that the YV purchased their first passenger cars and the combine at same the time that other railroads were getting steel cars. I blamed that situation on the fact that the president and board members had no previous experience about railroads... Jack Burgess

I have enjoyed all of Jacks video's and cant wait for more. The way he tells a story, the funny and serious is so delightful.I would follow Jack around while he did yard work just to listen to him. I am planning a surprise trip to California for my wife who has never been and it is her bucket list. We will start in Seattle where I took my mechanical Amtrak tests and stay in Ilwaco then to Portland Where I did my training at the station. We will go to the Redwoods and then down the coast to San Diego stopping along the way. My long story is that is there any way I can see Jack and his layout? If not I understand but if so could he private message me? Thank you and sorry for the long story. Troy.

Troy... If you and your wife are fully vaccinated, I would love to have you come and see my layout. If you go to my website (search for “Jack Burgess and Yosemite Valley RR” and you should get a hit. You will see my email address at the bottom of the first page. Send me information on when you would be in the San Francisco Bay area. We live in Newark. Jack Burgess
