@@TinoushGTR Yeah, and this car is FAT in means of weight :) By the way, best laptimes belong to hybrids that use electrical parts for enhancing acceleration, for topspeed nothing beats a fuel engine. Guess most people don't have any clue how much energy a liter of high quality fuel contains...
Can we all just have a round of applause for the two heros of this film. The driver with balls of steel driving a nearly 5000lb vehicle around the ring at its absolute limit and the guy who made those poor tires.
Limited from factory at 160mph (257kph), an update will come later for the 200mph (321kph), also running on the factory tires doesn't help at all for the track
@@mostneuter top speed won't help as it will spin off at the corners. There is a limit tyres will make as the car is so heavy and take some batteries out it would run out of charge.
@@mostneuter depends what the factory states as factory. I remember the old Evo sti m3csl days. They all used tyres normal people with other cars wouldn't buy because of price wear noise wet performance. If you about not legal Race tyres this is a different story
Thought I saw this as well. Gonna rile up all the Tesla fanboys, but look at a Nurburgring lap by a Porsche Taycan; yeah it’s slower, but handles way better
@@danielhu6485 track is a very specialized use, where admittedly the taycan handles better. But the Taycan is slower, less range, horrible software, weak charging network.. you know things normal people care about in their day to day life.
Thanks for the excellent footage, this looks breathtaking from inside the car! Oh and if you watch at half speed it looks almost exactly like my morning commute. 😀👍🏻
It was a decent lap, not breathtaking. But I’m surprised, I had higher expectations for the Plaid. Very, very slow given how much faster it is in a straight line than its competitors. Guess EV is still too heavy...even sedans with 400 less HP have almost the same if not faster time. Disappointing from Tesla!
And still is 3 seconds slower than a Alfa romeo giulia QV which has half the HP and costs less than half as much while also providing a luxurious Italian interior... I honestly expected more from the plaid as it's straight line performance is insane.. Seems like it turns as good as a yacht lol
@@nik7bkh965 the tesla is software limited to 268kmh in this video lol, the alfa will go 308. Sad the alfa has such an advantage and can only beat it by 3 seconds on a track with such long straight sections. Obvious hater is obvious.
Wow, you can really hear the tires screeching and fighting to keep the heavy ass car stay on track. The driver is impressive too, great lap time even without ceramic brakes, spoilers and other goodies.
@@noahlbecker i dont care about the regenerative braking, the problem is that the brakes will start to fade very very quickly and also will be gone in a matter of a couple laps which causes you to fit new discs and pads gain. Also I find the car just to be very unstable looking.
@@BIRKERBOYZ garbage huh depends if your thing is to impress some random dudes, than yeah better to be loud if you like to go fast its just an unnecessary noise imo oh and chicks don't dig them exhausts, they just like confident men
Incredible performance for a production sedan! The power out of the corners and straight line speed is insane. The tires are definitely fighting the mass through the corners. Thus the lighter and even more powerful upcoming Roadster will have even higher performance and a lower lap time.
Only two places to while away some time. Before the first concrete return station and on the road from the last one. The most beautiful ride I have ever seen on this circuit. Hats off.
@@wesleysavage9490 no shit Sherlock A freakin truck won't be as fast as a 4 door sedan around a race track Funny how you've shifted the goalpost from tires handling a heavy car to lap times You're so confused bruh
I mean.... it's likely gear teeth or a spline that you're hearing. Electricity is pretty quiet. Edit, could be the pulse generator for the motor power input.
@@Keneo1 I remember them mentioning they'll release an update later for the 200 mph limit. I think it's limited around 155 mph which is funny when the car gets there in a little over 9 seconds.
As someone who doesn't know the first thing about motorsports, but has lots of experience in Mario Kart, I am pleasantly surprised about the amound of micro-drifting in this video
That's not drifting. This car is just too heavy (and with bad tyres for racing). As powerful and fast in straight line, this is definitively not a real race car because it's a yacht on the turn
@@ghaksone5551 You really think they attempted to set the record in street tires? That's hilarious lmao. Every race I've ever been to you can hear cars screeching tires in the turns it doesn't matter what platform race car it is.

@@michaelmcdonald9847 I think that was his point. The roadster should hopefully be much lighter, much tighter, and much stiffer. More track setup. It should be spectacular in theory.
@@michaelmcdonald9847 It's marketed as a luxury sedan (which is debatable), so it's big and heavy as a consequemce. It's the 4th fastest production sedan around that track. How is that 'slow af'? Also, which Dodge is it 'like'?
@@edwinjacques9902 errr. Will it? Based on? I mean, I expect it to be quick as hell but, innovative? Rimac? Lotus? Others are getting there first with the insane eV supercars.
Now THIS is the proper venue for yoke steering -unlike on everyday streets. A racecar driver has his hands constantly gripping the handholds, and never has to turn either of them more than 90° to get through those racetrack curves. Superb handling by the driver! High five to him!
@@brucepugh1536 Bruh, how do you feel any play from a video, this guy is driving on the limit, constantly feeling the edge of course he jitters a bit watch any other hardcore track footage. If the driver was less experienced or all driver aids were totally off there'd be a huge problem recovering this ur right.
@@Eden-NoEye I was criticizing the car, not the driver. I think it would be much easier if there was less slop in the steering. I usually do not watch high-speed track footage so I am no expert. Just making an observation.
I just watched the new BMW M4 CSL do this lap and from what I can tell, the driver looked like he had a much easier time. Both amazing cars in their own worlds.
The car weights a fuckload. It's advantages compared to ICE are entirely flipped. It has essentially rockets strapped to it with an absolutely absurd acceleration, and is extremely stable and glued to it's trajectory. However maneuvering all that mass around requires some finesse and planning and it's absolutely not something you would expect when driving lightweight race cars. But remember despite beating million dollars purpose built racing machines, the plaid is still a spacious family car with a lot of range. What is concerning about the plaid's record isn't that it was unbeatable, if is that it was set by a vehicle that didn't actually have to compromise on anything else.
Very consistent and lovely driver. He knows his racing lines and has practiced a ton in the car it is easy to see. Always enjoyable to see a good driver keep it on the limit. Great drive!
@@miks564 I thought it was the hypercar killer? You know, Tesla claimed it was the fastest car in the world. Didn’t look very fast to me, even at the end it topped out at 260 Km/h. Must’ve been making about 500 HP by then hahaha
Incredible. This has made me want to revisit the 'ring and drive it again. And to anyone who's not driven it, it's a must - It's a lot of fun (even if a little scary).
You got it, this video was of a $129,900 family car, straight from factory. I can't wait to see the same car run modified as Elon posted about with tire/wheel/aero and other changes. On the way home from school, Dad or Mom could offer to take the kids to the amusement park... but instead, find a safe place and take them on a ride they will never forget! If I get negative feedback about that, I'm okay, I pushed the limits but if I were a kid..... ( oh, I still am ).
That seems terrifying. There's no gear changes and engine noises that you normally use to gauge speed and braking. That steering wheel would be extra weird too! Props to the driver!
That steering wheel looks like a serious pain in the ass. I guess the designers thought it looked cool, but it would drive me absolutely bonkers. At one point the poor guy had turned it past 90 degrees and it looked like he was going to break his wrists.
@@TheBest-ut4vw yeah but race wheels only turn 270 degrees to lock while this needs to do 2 rotation/720 degrees to lock. It needs a variable steering rack
@@TheBest-ut4vwno it’s not lol, racing wheels are designed to fit the drivers’ hands, not make it awkward to hold, the wheel on the S and X is too large for comfortable holding, if tesla wanted a racing wheel they should’ve done a formula 1 or le mans inspired wheel
Must say, it is refreshing to see the speedometer in km/h for once! Awesome driving, awesome to see they used the yoke, awesome time for a family sedan! Plaid is probably the best car on the planet rn.
@@fredbloggs5902 It probably can adjust automatically according to location? I don’t think anyone knows yet unless someone has tested going from US to Canada to see if it changes automatically? Pretty amazing considering the fact that it's using relatively normal sport 4S tires and no spoiler at the back. Add semislicks and a spoiler and you'll have some fun numbers
Yeah it's not a record, and not even a record for electric vehicles. Volkswagen was a minute faster, but they had a car designed for time records, with all those perks you mentioned.
@@maxinator80ify Volkswagon ID.R wasn't a car at all. It has 1 seat, 0 door, there is a scare opening in the roof to get in. Not street legal. It is closer to an F1 car
It will work out cheaper if you hold onto it for a few years because no gasoline, fever break changes, no air filter/oil filter/Oil/all those moving parts and gears/exhaust and all that crap that could need repairing. You'll get money back from the government in most places for buying an electric car, here in the UK it's free parking and no congestion charging, just plug it in when you get home… Don't look at the upfront cost

This driver is just friggin' pushin' it. The tires are going to be shredded at the end of the run. So much more difficult without the feedback from the engine sounds. Would be nice to have a camera on the speed-o-meter. Wonder how much battery capacity is left after that run.
For context these are just some of the cars that the Model S Plaid is faster than at the Nürburgring: BMW M5 (F90) Nissan GT-R (R35) Porsche 911 Carrera S Ferrari 458 Italia Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera LP570-4 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Audi R8 Coupé 5.2 FSI quattro Mind-blowing
Actually it's slower than the Nissan gtr which did a 7:24. The current 911 Carrera S does it in 7:30.4. It's pretty weird that the plaid was faster than a 911 turbo s at laguna seca but slower at the ring (7:17 compared to 7:30).
@Jonas Jonaitis True and true. However, cars with WAY less HP have carbon ceramic. They don’t necessarily help stop faster, but they help majorly with brake fade.

Just imagine it being a right hand driven car. There is your first person view. I don’t think there is much difference between this view and having it actually on him.
How did they complete this lap without overheating the brakes? I wonder if he took it easy on the brakes and still got an amazing lap time? Maybe it would be even faster with better brakes? And what an amazing driving job with the lack of a full steering wheel
most proper race cars (f1-4, le mans, etc) have square-like steering wheels. the only difference is they only need to turn 360-270 degrees to fully lock, the tesla needs a full 720
I mean, objectively speaking, spending $140,000 on a depreciating piece of harware like a car, IS a waste of money. That's true for any ridiculously priced car. That kind of money would be an amazing down payment on a house, which appreciates. These sort of things are impulsive, emotional purchase choices, not logical ones.
@@ganymede3141 But they review cars not houses. They don't add that caveat to all cars they review. Tesla's depreciation is also among the best across all cars. So it's a much better investment than most other cars. The demand for plaid is through the roof. I'm sure you could sell it for more than sticker price right now
@@indie Sure, people have been flipping cars for a long time. It always happens with new cars, preying on those who can't wait for more to make it on the market. It doesn't matter how well a car retains its value, it just means it depreciates more slowly than others. But the depreciation is still downward. You might be able to make a quick profit flipping the car, but in 5 years that car will be mostly obsolete and worth less than half of what it was new. A house on the other hand, will retain its value and appreciate over time. My point was, new cars are not 'investments'. You're essentially just burning money.

Making a computer follow pre mapped lines and basic problem solving with handling characteristics is possible. Having an AI run a track with no input is a different matter and probably not there yet.
It's that yoke, the tires, but also the yoke. Driver has no options but to keep his hands perfectly in one position, if he loses grip he better be a sniper to hit his hand perfectly on the small handle while things go south, otherwise he'll eat a wall.
It has to be put on a diet to lose weight. Basically gut all the interior, replace all body panels with carbon fiber etc. Shave off a couple hundred kilos and the cornering will be much better.
*starts breathing again... I think what impressed me the most was how little time he spent actually accelerating. Out of the corner, and by the time he was straight he was letting off and coasting to the next corner!
Only 7:35 though. That’s 40-50 seconds slower than top supercars that Tesla so proudly claims it can beat in a straight line. Oh and it’s even slower than a lot of sedans with less HP lol. I remember hearing a Tesla fanatic saying that the roadster was going to be faster than a formula 1 car around a circuit. Good luck, it only has to be about 3 minutes faster than this XD. the lap was good overall, but disappointing given my expectations for the plaid.
